Marvel Reportedly Wants One Director For THE KANG DYNASTY & SECRET WARS - Is A Title Change Imminent?

Marvel Studios is now searching for a new director for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and a new report indicates that Kevin Feige is searching for a filmmaker that will stay on board for Secret Wars...

The news broke last night that director Destin Daniel Cretton will no longer helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and will instead focus on his Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel, the Wonder Man Disney+ series (which will be part of the Spotlight banner), and other, unnamed Marvel Studios projects.

Marvel Studios will now begin the search for another filmmaker to take charge of the ambitious MCU event movie, and it sounds like whoever does take the gig is going to be very busy for the next few years.

According to Jeff Sneider, Kevin Feige ideally wants the same director for both The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, which is "essentially a two-parter." Sneider has also heard that a title change may be imminent. It now seems clear that Marvel will take steps to veer away from the planned Kang storyline, either replacing Jonathan Majors as the villain or ditching the character altogether and shifting focus to another Multiverse Saga big bad (possibly Doctor Doom).

If accurate, it obviously wouldn't make much sense to keep The Kang Dynasty name, and Sneider believes "Secret Wars Part 1" and Secret Wars Part 2" is a more likely outcome.

As for Secret Wars, we have previously heard that the studio was looking at tried and tested filmmakers behind some of the most popular and successful movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to ensure the hugely ambitious project is in safe hands, including Jon Favreau (Iron Man), and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther). Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness helmer Sam Raimi was also said to be a "top Choice."

There's a chance Feige still has one of these directors in mind to bring in both hugely ambitions Avengers movies.

Loki EP Kevin Wright recently indicated that In The Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldon was working on both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

"As far as where it's all going, I can't say and not because I am being coy, we're not a part of those projects. What I would say is, I mean, I know Michael Waldron is working on them and he loves obviously this world as he helped create it."

If the same filmmaker does ultimately sign on to helm both movies, who would you most like to see in the director's chair?

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars to follow on May 7, 2027.

@vectorsigma - if Iger/Feige cancel Majors and attempt to bring in Whedon they would be mocked on almost every media front known to man AND the optics of the racial disparity in treatment would be a complete and devastating nightmare for the brand

Put it in the hands of a maestro/a who can manage a big production.

Shawn Levy already signed for both movies.

Mark my words.

And also, they'll scrap the Kang Dynasty title and move it to Secret Wars followed by Eternity War.

@MadThanos - nah. Secret wars is held in high regard in the marvel community. No way are they gonna waste their version of secret wars as being a part 1 to something else.

@Origame - But didn’t Infinity War get bumped to a part 1 when the entire infinity saga had been building to it?

It almost tracks that the part 1 would be Secret Wars and the part 2 would have another title.
Origame

@mountainman - yeah but infinity war doesn't have the same connection with the Fandom.

The stories that were adapted were infinity and infinity gauntlet.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/16/2023, 9:54 AM
@Origame - Oh yeah they basically adapted Infinity Gauntlet and called it something else.

But even Secret Wars is convoluted. It seems like they are mainly adapting the 2015 version and not the 1985 version. But it’s a major adaptation. Kang wasn’t behind it. I doubt we get much of Battleworld. Even if they do put Doom in this at the last minute, it’s not going to have the weight or gravitas of the comic.

Most of these comic title names they take to the movies are just a marketing ploy. They typically don’t adapt then accurately at all.

Infinity War is the most iconic Marvel Saga.

Oh we’re gettin at least 7 articles based off of Sneider’s 1 article aren’t we.

That’s too bad, Kang Dynasty is an epic name and that storyline still has a lot of potential, even if they re-cast i hope they don’t abandon it in favor of rushing to a cameo-fest. I really liked the plan of KD focusing on all the 616 heroes, with Secret Wars focusing on the multiversal lineup of past versions of characters from other movies.
RedFury

@DanFlashesShirt - I feel the same way. Sure Kang hasn't been living up to the idea they've been laying out, but I think thats easy enough to push in the right direction. And like you said, the rumored setup of how they were going to tackle it sounds pretty cool. Everyone gets their due in that situation; both old and new. If they were smart they would make the mutliversal lineup one fans have been clamoring for.

Give us the biggest fan favorite heroes and throw them together on a team. I could care less if the line up isn't comic accurate. I think it would just be amazing to see the characters we have loved old and new together in action. It's truly the only time it'll actually workout and make sense within the plot. So they might as well jump on the opportunity.

As much as i'd like to see Doom, i still want to see what they got planned for Majors. I also hate how someone is guilty before they've had their day in court so Marvel should stay the course IMO.

As for 1 (or more) director on both Avengers movies. It makes sense to have it as one large production and having the same people involved. Similar to how they did with infinity war and Endgame. Though they were seperate, there was hardly a break in filming them back to back. and they'd likely save a bunch on production cost.
