Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Explains Why There's No AVENGERS Film In Phase 4 And Teases X-MEN Plans

In a new interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explains why there was no Avengers movie announced at Comic-Con and reveals that they have something "different" in store for the MCU's X-Men...

Marvel's Phase 4 slate is absolutely epic but there was one notable omission: The Avengers. Avengers: Endgame just passed Avatar to become the biggest movie in history and so it seems crazy for there not to be another adventure for Earth's Mightiest Heroes on the way, regardless of whether that's New Avengers, Young Avengers, or even Dark Avengers!

Now, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has explained the reason that they're being benched.

"We had a movie this year called Avengers: Endgame, and it is very much an ending, as you saw, to so many of those characters," he explains. "So Phase 4 is about beginnings, and Phase 4 is about learning new things about characters you already think you know."

"[Like] Black Widow; meeting incredible new characters like The Eternals and Shang-Chi; going on new adventures with Doctor Strange and Thor; and these Disney+ shows which I promise will be spectacular and what no one is expecting."

As for the X-Men, Feige explained that "mutants" is just a blanket term used to describe the characters and not the title of the next movie. However, asked if Marvel Studios will avoid that name in the wake of Fox's disastrous movies, all he would say is that what they have planned for the team will be "quite different" to what we've seen before on screen.

The Disney+ TV shows are also included on the Phase 4 slate and Falcon & The Winter Soldier is up next for Fall 2020. Footage shown revealed that Baron Zemo will don his comic book mask and it looks like he's out for revenge against these two. Sadly, the new Captain America suit wasn't revealed but Anthony Mackie did come out on stage with the shield.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was next to be confirmed and we now know who will be playing both Shang-Chi and The Mandarin. We'll have more on that on the site for you soon.

As expected, WandaVision is coming to Disney+ but here's a surprise: Teyonah Parris is playing an adult version of Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel. It remains to be seen whether she'll adopt her superhero persona from the comic books but it certainly sounds like that will be the case.

Also coming to Disney+ is Loki and the series will follow the version of the character from 2012 who managed to escape with the Tesseract when The Avengers travelled back in time in Endgame!

Exciting news for Doctor Strange fans as the Sorcerer Supreme will return to the big screen in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness where he will go to war with Nightmare in the MCU's first horror movie! And yes, Elizabeth Olsen will appear as the Scarlet Witch as WandaVision leads directly into the 2021 release...

A huge number of MCU actors will reprise their roles in this animated series and The Watcher has finally been cast! We'll have to wait and see whether he makes the leap from What If? to a live-action setting, though. Check back here later for a full list of actors set to lend their voices to the show.

It had been rumoured but Hawkeye is indeed coming to Disney+ and he'll be joined by Kate Bishop. If that logo is anything to go by, it will be based on Matt Fraction's critically acclaimed comic book run.

Thor: Love and Thunder will feature an openly gay Valkyrie and the big screen debut of a female Thor...played by Natalie Portman! The cast hasn't seen the script yet but Portman came out on stage holding Mjolnir so it's pretty obvious where things are going. Don't fret, though, as Chris Hemsworth will still factor into proceedings!

As expected, Black Widow has also been confirmed. It will be set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and Taskmaster is going to be the villain. Yelena Belova is also going to appear.

I think Feige has some sort of slow rollout covert ops surprise plan for F4. It's no mistake that he mentioned them at the end of the pres and then when asked directly he said that any info would be spoilers. I think we're going to get teased in a few films before the FF get their own film. Build up some hype, Thanos style.

@TheManWithoutFear - but out of the movies announced yesterday, where can they pop up?

@Frshcoupe - Eternals or Doctor Strange 2

@TheManWithoutFear - Agreed. The only thing I expect to hear about both F4 and X-Men at D23 is possible phase and release dates.

The last time Feige said they were holding back information because it would be a spoiler was the title for Endgame. And we didn't end up learning that until a few months before the movie came out.

So I think you're dead on. I expect the next phase of films to slowly introduce the idea of mutants and the F4 to MCU and then once they are known and talked about, we'll start getting more info as we get closer to phase 5. Which would make sense with Feige's comments about not seeing the X-Men or F4 for 5 years.

@Frshcoupe - Maybe there'll be a series of post credits teases that slowly build towards the FF. Like minute details in the upcoming films that are linked to the post-credits then build into an FF narrative.

It would take insane amounts of clever planning but anybody who puts that past Feige hasn't been paying attention.

@TheManWithoutFear - A slow roll-out makes a lot of sense. And while 2022 is too soon for an F4 movie imo it's perfect to start a bunch if teases and cameos. Also not that none if the movies for the next 2 years are suitable for any of the F4. Two will be off-planet, one will be off dimension, one set in the past, and one set in the Far East. Those don't fit the F4.

I’m really starting to think the new tower is gonna be the baxter building

@MalseMarcel - It only makes sense. And I know that the Netflix shows are officially no longer canon, but there was an easter egg in Defenders (I think?) that had the name of the building and it was the name of the street that the Baxter Building is located on in the comics.

Again, I know Netflix isn't canon now, but to put that kind of easter egg in it makes me feel like they knew something when making that scene.

I absolutly love that Thor logo. It is such a perfect Thundercats/Master Of The Universe blend!

Only wish it was called "Love, Craft and Thunder" since the title of Dr Strange is "In The Multiverse of Madness"

(Yes, I recycel jokes. Im from the land of Greta after all)

If not avengers why not something like defenders with doctor strange, hulk, Valkyrie, although we still need name and silver surfer so I guess that wouldn’t work

It seems like they’ve treated SDCC as a good way to sell these plus shows. I imagine they’ll drop some big bombshells at d23, probably give Sony a stage presence with them to announce Spider-Man 3 and the state of the deal going forward.

Captain Marvel 2, Black Panther 2, F4 and X-Men as well. All their BIG guns for Disney’s event.

Frshcoupe - 7/21/2019, 4:47 AM
I don’t think they’re going to announce F4 and X-Men for a while. Maybe next year. D23 is going to be all about Star Wars.

CorndogBurglar - 7/21/2019, 6:15 AM
@Frshcoupe - They just announced F4 and Blade yesterday and said they didn't have time to talk about Mutants. I fully expect D23 to be the place they talk about X-Men. They wouldn't have mentioned them and then made us wait another year to say anything.

@CorndogBurglar - i keep seeing everyone say this and they didn’t really announce anything he basically said the same thing he’s been saying which is that he’s working on it . Specifically his full quote is “That means that we have them back and we are working towards it,”

"in the wake of Fox's disastrous movie"

Hey there Josh Wilding, dont be slyly inserting your own personal gripes in there! On the whole, the X-Men movies have registered pretty damn positively with audiences and critics alike - sure there's a couple of turkeys in there, but overall they made more good movies than bad, and with the likes of X-Men, X-Men 2, First Class, DofP, Logan and the Deadpools, they made some pretty [frick]ing great movies as well.

CorndogBurglar - 7/21/2019, 6:18 AM
@528491 - I would remove First Class from your list as that movie was the beginning of all the continuity errors for Fox-Men. But I love all the others you mentioned. DoFP was the only mainline X-Men film that was entertaining for me out of the 4 newer ones.
