EDITORIAL: Avengers: New Villain

In this editorial, I explore what the latest Avengers leak means, examine the positives and negatives, and say what I think will happen in the film with this revealed villain. Obviously, a spoiler warning for those who haven't read the leak.

I put a spoiler warning in the teaser, but really, who hasn't read the leak? With that said, let's begin.

Now, we all know this movie is going more toward the Ultimate route, with a little 616 thrown in. At the end of Thor, we see Loki getting ready to execute his master plan. We also know that he has an "army." Speculation and rumors point toward the goblin-like Skrulls, which is the most likely. Some say it's going to be the Chitauri, the Ultimate version of the Skrulls. That would make better sense for the live action world, for the Chitauri look less 60's and more of a threat. However, all of this goes out the window from the latest leak. While we still want to know what the "army" and mysterious "Leviathan" is, our minds our now pre-occuupied with this. Alright, here we go.

THANOS is coming.

Talk about the leak of the century, heck, maybe even the biggest leak ever. Thanos is a character that is just too hard to imagine on the big screen. Sure, we can picture it, but his presence in a film would just be too unbelievable to do. Well, it's going to happen May 4th, 2012.

Thanos is one of Marvel's biggest threats. He alone could probably take out all of the Avengers teaming up. What makes him even more dangerous is his worship of Death. (Hey, maybe we'll get to see her, or at least a cameo.) This guy destroys whole worlds!

However, I could not help but feel a little worried.

Now, Thanos being in it has the Marvel fan in me yelling for joy, but I have a feeling that he's going to be down-played. Destroyer from Thor was hugely down-graded. In the comics, Thor could never beat it alone, let alone in under two minutes. Two minutes. Thor got his hammer back, and he beat the "invincible" Destroyer in under two minutes. Why did Marvel have the need to down-play its power? Thanos is even above Destroyer, I doubt Marvel will show his true strength.

Now, it was leaked that Thanos makes a deal with Loki for the Infinity Gauntlet. Just knowing that thing will be a factor is astounding. But do you know the magnitude of it? Look at these two images.

That's right, equipped with it, Thanos has the power to destroy whole universes. With one snap, half of the universe's life was wiped out. Alright, I doubt first of all that he will get a hold of it in the film. If he does, then that's it. The Avengers are dead. On the other hand, if he does get it, I don't think the film will show the extent of its power. For some reason, weapons/villains are severely down-graded to "general audience appeal." For some strange reason, the general public can't handle universes being destroyed, or except the fact that things such as the Gauntlet can do it.

Now here is Marvel's chance to break that barrier. They can show what a comic book adaption is. Who says we can't have planets or universes being destroyed in a single snap? I want to see Thanos destroy whole cities at least, this should be the comic book movie, or heck, just movie that will feature the most destruction ever.

I speculate, however, that Thanos will not fight in the film. I believe in the after-credits scene, Loki, after being defeated by the Avengers, is located and destroyed by Thanos. What follows is Thanos saying his new plan, which sets up for Avengers number two.

I think that's pretty feasible, though I hope I'm wrong. I want to see Thanos and the Avengers square off for the battle that will shake the live-action world to the core. Thanos, with the Infinity Gauntlet, took on the whole Marvel universe. Let's see what Marvel Studios plan to do with that.

Thanks for reading.

just seeing someone as amazing as thanos on the big screen is enough to get me excited being anything from 10 minutes to 30 minutes i don't care.

its what the future holds for thanos & other cosmic marvel films.

i seriously hope they don't put the Infinity Gauntlet in this shit. at least not as the threat. they can show Thanos gathering one of the gems or something for a future film.

but if they plan to put the Infinity Gauntlet in a movie with Thanos wielding it, they need to introduce an entire shit load of characters first. The Avengers alone would never even hope to defeat him.

they need to make some cosmic movies first to introduce the cosmic side of the MU (Guardians of the Galaxy?). then they can do an Infinity Gauntlet movie, and have all the marvel characgters cross over in it. Its the only way to not make the Infinity Gauntlet look like the Dark Phoenix in X3. Totally watered down,

Good article, destroyer

Thanos lends his army to Loki.
Loki's staff has the blue Infinity Gauntlet gem?
Feige spoke of cosmic films being produced after this.
I imagine: Loki plans are revealed with an insert cut of...
Loki speaking with Thanos.
No biggie. Just a big thing for fans.

I am officially hyped for this movie!! I hope that he's not going to be throughtout the whole movie. That wouldn't play out well. Save him for the sequel or the third movie. If he's on screen for about a minute or so, then that is good enough for me.

@Destroyer14 Awesome article, dude. Keep up the great work!

@ CorndogBurglar

i know we've seen a complete infinity gauntlet........what if marvel went for a movie version of "thanos quest".

it'll be a different take on the super-hero movie were the lead is a super-villain.

the news of thanos, took avengers from being my least most anticipated superhero film of 2012 to my 2nd, the idea of seeing thanos holding the guantlet is too much to bare, much less wearing it, and beyond that USING IT, i bashed the avengers before, but really i dont want to anymore, i was frightened of them using loki and aliens, as thor stopped loki and an army of frost giants, but with thanos, who knows who will have the upperhand

This is a cool theory, I like the idea of Thanos working behind the scenes, but I'd prefer Loki 2 stay alive; theres just too much fun 2 b had with the character

Hope u can check out my 'Captain America' fan cast though

Wow, but since Fox and Sony own pivotal characters, so I hope that he is down-played. I would love to see the Avengers prevent Thanos from getting the IG, and see the Hulk smash Thanos in the end, before Thanos buggers off swearing revenge.

My thing with Thanoas being the villain is how is the cosmic cube gonna come in? Whedon isn't that dumb, but I guess we'll have to see.

I don't have a problem with him being in the film I just would make his cameo into more than 3min.s or there are gonna be a lot of pissed off fans on this site after the Avengers comes out in theaters.. he should be shown in one scene with Loki making the deal, another with Death and the last one should be the end of credits scene with him displaying the awesome power of the Infinity Gauntlet by destroying a planet for Mistress Death..

At the end of the movie Thor just past the credits, was that the Cosmic Cube? Thanos is after that from time to time. Thanos could come to collect it.

I don't think they would kill Loki off in a after credits scene. He's too big of a character and not everyome stays after the credits.

great article! i was gonna write one like this but you beat me to it :P less work for me! loki wont be killed off though because he's confirmed he's appearing in thor 2... and thanos should be in the scene where loki makes the deal and an after-credits scene. maybe kang could be used for avengers 2 and cos hes a time traveller he locks thanos in a different dimension and then thanos breaks out and is used for avengers 3? pure speculation though...

Destroyer14 - 9/14/2011, 10:34 AM
Thanks MovieMaster. You're right, Loki "can't" be killed off.....or maybe he gets resurrected by Hela for Thor 2, you never know with these things.

ah, thats a good point. marvel are playing this very close to the chest. we know leaks and stuff, but we dont know how they'll fit into the movie.

I swore from the start that the only thing that could get me on board for this movie would be if Thanos somehow played a role in it. I read "The Infinity Gauntlet" many years ago and LOVED it! That was one of the few Marvel books i actually really loved.

If Thanos is in then consider me totally on board for this film!!!

Loki goes to Asgard with Thor at the End of Avengers. I'm guessing if it is Thanos as it has not been confirmed, The Gauntlet will be taken back to Asgard with Thor and Loki only to be proven a fake, cue Thanos donning the glove cue end credits. BUT until he is confirmed, it's all speculation. the Atlanteans stil haven't been discounted.

Also - Thor defeats the destroyer plenty of times, even decapitating it when Desak was inside of it. Nearly everytime he has fought the destroyer he has been severely weakened, after fighting Midgaard Serpent, being cursed by brittle bones by Hela etc. However, I agree, battle time has got to be Longer and more epic. ONLY if the villian has the power to prolong a battle with such beings as Thor - Hulk etc.

'Leviathan’ means sea creature, it is not the name of anything ( so it could be Fin Fang Foom or an Atlantian weapon ((or both, remember its a movie version)), and I think it would be awesome to have Thanos be the second main villian next to Loki, or this movie may set Thanos up to be the villan in the sequel (and I dont know much at all about Fin Fang Foom btw

CDB@ I wouldn't mind the IG being a little down played. just to the extent that the current avengers team we have can beat him. The problem is it seems like all the gems are already in the guantlet so him gathering them up over the course of a movie or two, while a better idea, seems unlikley. I mean with Thor, Hulk, Loki and most likley the cosmic cube, along with the rest of the avengers... i would be ok with them going up against the IG. but i see where you're coming from. i just think for the sake of making a movie it HAS to be down played a tiny bit. (i also think it's hilarious how about every weapon in odin's vault was better than the casket of anciet winters but the frost giants only go for that lol)

But im excited as all hell to see this freakin movie! especially with THANOS!

my only question is: how did nick fury see this coming? how did he know all this was going to happen or that SOMETHING was going to happen? so far it seems like all of these events are very fluid - only time will bring answers!

NightForce - 9/17/2011, 12:17 PM
@OdinsBeard I think it would make sense to down play the Gauntlet (reshaping the universe itself? Bit much for the first movie.)
And funny point about the Frost giants too. I woulda got a shopping cart and took all those bad boys (of course I woulda got raped by the Destroyer anyway, but whatever lol.)
But that sounds cool Loki making a deal with Thanos(Hiddleston said Loki makes some deals, who knows?)

This sets up a Guardians of the Galaxy film nicely, especially if they go with Drax the Destroyer as the centerpiece. Building the cosmic part of the universe as well as the earth part will be huge. I can see the next 5-11 films Marvel releases having increasingly more to do with Thanos until Avengers 2, or possibly 3 if they don't feel there has been a big enough universe created yet. The problem with doing Thanos in Avengers 2 is that there is likely no villain that can top Thanos for Avengers 3. Personally, I see an Ant-Man film that sets up Ultron, and allows for the introduction of the Vision for Avengers 2. Then at the end of Avengers 2 you look at a much broader plan that has been building for several movies, all motivated by Thanos' desire to please Death, and it culminates in the most epic movie to ever grace the silver screen in Avengers 3.
