Joss Whedon (Briefly) Talks More About Iron Man's Return In THE AVENGERS 2

With Robert Downey Jr. officially on board for two more Avengers films, many have been wondering how Tony Stark will return after the ending of Iron Man 3. Well, writer-director Joss Whedon (jokingly) confirms a rather surprising factor.

Warning: the following contains spoilers from Iron Man 3. If you haven't seen the movie yet and don't want to be spoiled, stop reading here.

Joss Whedon appeared on The Colbert Report this week to discuss his latest film, Much Ado About Nothing. Of course, talk eventually turned to the highly anticipated sequel to The Avengers. It was announced the other day that Robert Downey Jr. signed a new contract to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in two follow-ups to the most successful comic book movie of all time, but those who have seen Iron Man 3 will definitely wonder how Stark will return to the role of the Armored Avenger. At the end of the threequel, he destroyed (apparently all of) his Iron Man suits, and he even had his arc reactor removed. Whedon previously stated that Stark would have at least one suit left that we didn't see, and here, he's asked if he'll still have an arc reactor in the sequel. Unsurprisingly, he gives a humorous answer, saying, "Well they just replace it, it's elsewhere [points to his rectum]. I can't give it all away but he's still got it." Very interesting. Whedon has been dropping various pieces of info for The Avengers 2 for a few weeks (including Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's inclusions, Loki's absence and more), and with filming expected to begin next March in the UK, stay tuned to CBM for more news on the highly anticipated Disney/Marvel production. To watch Stephen Colbert's full interview with Whedon (in which the writer-director discusses microbudget films and moving to Shakespeare), click the source link below. The Avengers 2 is set to hit theaters May 1st, 2015.

If you watch the clip, it's cleary just a joke, as Whedon points to his butthole, while saying that the reactor is "somewhere else". Maybe it turns out in Avengers 2, that he actually still DOES have it (I doubt it, though), but this interview isn't what gave that away, as Whedon is clearly just kidding.

So Joss's got to clean Black's mess sigh, though I do understand why they wrapped everything up in Iron Man 3, there was a chance that Robert Downey Jr wouldn't return for The Avengers 2, so they had to conclude arcs and plot points for his Tony Stark end that chapter before the new one post Iron Man 3. There's an obvious set up a future semi reboot in that movie.

They should just make Avengers 2 a time travelling story and pretend the Iron Man 3 shitstorm never happened.

I'm pretty sure that they went over how they were going to handle the events in Iron Man 3 for The Avengers 2. I'm sure they wouldn't just throw something at Whedon unexpectedly like that.

In the comics, they fixed Tony's heart issue sometime in the 1980's IIRC. The comic continued, the character of Iron Man didn't come to a grinding halt. Much like Whedon's movie, its much ado about nothing.

Got a feeling Tony is going to be less "Iron man" from now on. He'll still fight and have a suit but probably going to be taking more of a back seat role in the team.

@Ineedrevelation: LOL

Tony only threw the ARC reactor case away, if you watch the movie again you see that the "glowing element" wasnt inside of the ARC reactor case. Also every suit had it's own ARC reactor (atleast the ones Jarvis remotely controlled).

Well in the comics before the movies Tony never had an Acr Reactor in his chest, it was in the suit like War Machines... Whats the confusion?

Enough with Shellhead. Let's talk about the sequel to the best solo movie of Phase One and what I'm guessing to be the best solo Phase Two movie.

Jarvis fabricates the suits. Jarvis is a program. With a database. The suits will always be there with Jarvis. He'll fabricate them on demand from the Stark (Avengers?) Tower, probably. Arc reactors were never a problem, even War machine had it's own.

He can use the hole in his chest to store beer cans while he watches some game on the TV for all I care.

Avengers 2 will be awesome and you all know this :)

I personally think that his final, "I am Iron Man," statement might mean that he is now Iron Man, by all literal sense...and he's got the armor stored in his body, now that his arc reactor is gone. But again, this is Tony Stark we're talking about, so who knows!

And, bring on The Avengers sequel...with Saoirse Ronan! :) Or Summer Glau, if Whedon can, but Ronan would be pretty damn fine for me.
