After months of secrecy surrounding the Joss Whedon-directed pilot, ABC Network has provided a synopsis for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV drama, revealing its new title, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Also providing vague story details, check out the synopsis below and expect a one-hour run time.

Joss Whedon (MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) shows us not all heroes are super with MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven’t been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They’ll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).
Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual – of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents – that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world.

Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvel’s first live-action TV series, MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Sounds good to me. I wonder if it'll just be a villain of the week sorta thing, or if it'll have a Big Bad each season, like Buffy?

Of course Marvel has to put their name in front of all their shows. Honestly I just prefered SHIELD as the title

I hope that Coulson turns out to be a life-model decoy or something because I'd be disappointed, after The Avengers, to see him just magically come back from the dead. HOWEVER if they do make him into Vision, like the rumours suggested, that would be historically awesome.

Isn't there a new cartoon coming out called Agents of smash???

i think its a good thing marvel put their name infront of everything. it give more brand awareness to the general audience. because unlike us, most people cant tell the difference between dc and marvel. if they can establish a good brand, then any of their show that follows can get help from it. especially the relatively unknown ones like ant-man and hopefully panther

They probably had a problem with the name Shield, because of the old show called "the shield". Anyway its gonna be like the Ateam crossed with Xfiles. Should be good.

agents of shield is a great title, the only thing i'm concerned with is how they explain coulson being alive.

fingers crossed he was a life model decoy.

i like the name SHIELD better, but whatever. I still want to know how they're gonna b.s. their way into bringing Coulson back....he really should've stayed dead in Avengers. I'm ok w/a Vision modeled after Coulson later, but this is dumb.

Ski1, I ain't an idiot for suggesting that Coulson be Vision. Nobody is. Plus, how the hell is it possible to survive that severe of a stab wound? Loki basically stabbed him in the heart. If they do go with that, with Fury faking his death for "a push", I don't really see what the point of it all was (none of the team seemed to really need "a push" to begin with, them seemed fine enough after Loki was gone) and it would just make that whole section of the movie feel pointless in the end.

Sounds cool. I'm glad there's going to be sci-fi/otherworldly elements in this show and not just regular threats like terrorists or what not. Some episodes like that would be awesome though. They could face AIM, modern day HYDRA, and the Ten Rings. This show will probably be like 24 meets Fringe and the X-Files, set in the Marvel Universe.

I have faith in Joss Whedon he has a lot of experience with TV. I'm willing to bet that this will be the first superhero show (even if it isn't technically about Superheroes it is about people in a world with Supes that have to deal with them everyday. So I view it as a superhero show.) to actually work.

Thank you for using Avina. Have a pleasant day.
;)

Coulson could be a hologram now. Maybe an LMD. Could be a program based on his personality. Or Fury might have lied to make the Avengers stop acting like a bunch of spiteful children.

sounds stupid to me.... Shield was Perfect.
but anyway... as long as the show is good

SHIELD does sound better, but adding "Marvel" to the name it helps to signify to non-comic fan viewers who may be unfamiliar with the lore that this is indeed the same company responsible for Avengers. I don't really care about the name anyway, I just hope it's a good show. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase Marvel characters that never would've been featured in movies, and I'd like to hope Whedon took advantage of that. Hopefully there will be some Avengers cameos down the line, I know Hulk is probably out of the question for a TV budget, but maybe they could have at least Ruffalo as Banner. Cap, Hawkeye, & Widow would be the easiest ones to include; hopefully Iron Man & Thor could appear at some point too though. I think it'd be cool if this show somehow lead up to Phase 2 as well, I know it's canon to the universe, but there's a possibility this show might have little else to do with the MCU besides that; which I hope is not the case.

Yeah we need to know how he came back, but otherwise the synopsis sound excellent, I was thinking Law & Order meets X-files in the MCU
