MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Finishes Weekend On $205M Domestic And $650M Internationally

We're still waiting on the final figures, but it has just been revealed that Marvel's The Avengers grossed far more than expected yesterday, making its total for the weekend even higher than was originally thought. UPDATE: The total has now been confirmed at over $207M.

Box office results aren't exactly exciting news. I mean, it's not like the debut of a new trailer or the reveal of a new piece of casting information. However, it's hard to deny that following the progress of Marvel's The Avengers at the North American box office this weekend has been something of a thrill. With estimates having the film down as making anything from $150 million to $175 million, the Joss Whedon helmed superhero ensemble has exceeded expectations again and again. Following the announcement yesterday that the film would gross a record breaking $200.3M (although that was by no means a guarantee as it could have ended up falling slightly below that number) Deadline reveals that Disney ended up taking as much as $55 million on Sunday. This takes its weekend total to an amazing $205 million and its worldwide cume to somewhere around the $650 million mark. Marvel's The Avengers is now guaranteed to join the $1 billion club, but where on the list of all-time highest grossing films (find it HERE) do you think it will end up? Can it beat Avatar?! Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

UPDATE: Disney has confirmed that Marvel's The Avengers made $56.8M yesterday, taking its total for the weekend up to roughly $207.1M, its foreign total to $447.4M and global to $654.5M.

I hope it beats Avatar that film was horrible. This film deserves everything it's getting. I haven't had this much fun since I first watched Jurassic Park.

It really won't have any real competition until MB3 and Prometheus. Will Smith is pretty damn popular. Prometheus looks like it will be really good actually.

What happens if dark shadow beats this?
beetheb
beetheb - 5/7/2012, 4:11 AM
It will beat neither Avatar nor Titanic worldwide, it doesn't have anywhere near the clout overseas it would need to do that. I think it has a legit shot at unseating Deathly Hallows 2 at #3 though.

My predictions:
Domestic: $520 Million
Foreign: $850 Million

Total: $1.37 Billion - #3 all-time worldwide

Kes: Good call on the $200 Million weekend, and you may be right on $1 Billion in the next week or 10 days.

Matter of fact, I'm upping my earlier prediction to $1.7 Billion worlwide. I've underestimated how it would perform like 3 times now, think I'll get with the program and overestimate slightly.

Yea! I said no less than 175 to and probably 200+ opening weekend. I figured it would do the higher! I think this assures a sequel!

Saw it for the 4th time on Sunday, and when an 11:30 AM Sunday matinee is completely sold out, you know something special is going on. The usher said every showing on Friday night through Sun morning was a sell-out (playing on 8 screens there). The only question is, where does it go from here? The 2nd weekend will tell us a lot. Even a steep 60% drop would still give it $80 million next weekend... I'm hoping for closer to $90 mil!
