POLL: Will THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Beat THE AVENGERS At The Box Office?

Marvel's The Avengers has broken record after record and looks set to become one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. Of course, that has led to fans AND analysts arguing over whether or not The Dark Knight Rises will beat it. Well, here's your chance to decide once and for all.

It's the question on everybody's lips. If you use Twitter, you will have no doubt seen various film writers and box office analysts discussing whether or not The Dark Knight Rises will be able to top Marvel's The Avengers at the box office later this year. It's not hard to understand why either, especially as The Dark Knight was the first comic book movie to gross $1 billion (after being re-released that is). Now, Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble has smashed every record set by Christopher Nolan's last Batman movie, and analysts are currently predicting that it will ultimately take the #3 spot on the list of all-time highest grossing movies. So, the question now is, will The Dark Knight Rises be able to topple The Avengers? Here's your chance to share your thoughts on this controversial subject...

I don't think TDKR will beat the Avengers in revenue but it should be a bad ass CBM.

Doesn't matter. As long as both movies are good I'll be happy.

But the Avengers does appeal to the broader audience (kids can go etc.), so TDKR will have to work hard to smash the Avengers records. Not saying it isn't possible, just saying it'll be tough. Can't wait for TDKR though. Let's hope it's just as great as the Avengers was! :D

The Avengers broadened the appeal of CBM's and TDKR may benefit from it

It always seem like the polls tell a very different story than the comment section. Polls always show Batman in the lead while the comments suggest otherwise. Either the people who love Batman are voting multiple times or the haters are just louder and more vocal, lol.

Repetition of a prediction, MY prediction, from a couple of months ago.

Avengers - $750m - $1b

TDKR - $500 - $750m
TonyChu
TonyChu - 5/14/2012, 10:56 AM
It is possible but kind of unlikely. TDKR will make shit loads of money there is absolutely no denying that. Batman is who I consider the most popular comic book character in history and has a huge fan appeal. But the Avengers was a superhero ensemble done right and was the first of its kind.

I seriously doubt any movie is beating Avengers this year. Make no mistake, Batman will make a [frick] ton of money. I think Spider-Man will as well.

I doubt it will, but I hope it comes close. This is a great era for CBM fans. The better the films and the more money they make, the more films they will make for us to enjoy.

I don't think it will... It'll do well but avengers had years of hype behind it... I've never been a bat fan myself or DC! 100% marvel... That's me

Honestly I dont really care. TDK broke records too so its no doubt that TDKR is gonna make a ton of cash. Im more concerned about how good the movie is and the story its telling. Thats what im concerned about.

The only reason why I was excited to see Avengers doing so well is because soooo many people doubted the film. And who doesn't like to see the underdog rise to the top?
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 5/14/2012, 11:09 AM
Putting out a poll like this just puts more fuel on the never-ending DC vs. Marvel drivel that occurs on a regular basis here. What difference does it make other than to those egos that side with one or the other and can then gloat afterwards?

LoudNoises@the polls typically start out that way here and then end up the other way when it is all said and done, so I am not sure what polls you are referring to.

I think another question is which movie will more people see? It doesn't matter how much tickets are. Are more people buying the tickets for one over the other, and if 3D adds to the price and more people buy higher-priced tickets that actually could be seen as a positive for the Avengers' numbers as opposed to being a negative as some seem to try to make it out to be. More people are willing to pay more money to see the film.

Judging from the trailer reactions prior to when I attended the Avengers, the only film trailer that got any type of audience reaction was surprisingly....not TDKR....not TASM....but.....Frankenweenie. :-P

While at a disadvantage of not being 3D, TDKR will still make huge money. While it may not be as kid friendly for say 3-6 yr. olds, any kid over that age is going to want to see Batman. It will be closer in money than you think, but what's important here is that we, the fans get another great CBM!

NO ONE QUESTIONS THAT A COMIC MOVIE WILL BE THE HIGHEST GROSSING MOVIE OF THE YEAR...AND PROBABLY OF ALL TIME.

TRULY, IT IS A GREAT TIME TO BE ALIVE.

Also, I doubt TDKR will take it. Maybe a 35% chance.
santoanderson
santoanderson - 5/14/2012, 11:13 AM
I think two things will seriously hurt TDKR's chances at beating the Avengers:
1) 3D & 3D IMAX surcharges can swell a movie ticket's price by at least 30%.
2) Avengers is a more family friendly movie. You can take a 4-year old to see Avengers, and not really feel guilty about it. When TDK came out, lot of parents were leaving their kids with the sitter, simply because TDK dealt with a lot of adult themes which could frighten little kids or go completely over their heads.

I don't think TDKR will reach the Avengers numbers partly because Avengers is family friendly. I have seen it twice and there were lots of kids.

Granted there are lots of CBM fan parents who would see the movie with or without their kids, and these same people will prob see TDKR without the kids, but I think this has added to the sales because it is easier to bring the kids along, and they still have to pay for them.

Hard to tell. The reception will be the deciding factor. Will opening weekend be bigger? My gut tells me no. And when it comes to reception, how much more can the general public like a movie than Avengers? It's tied for the record for shortest time to reach $1 billion.

I 100% doubt that;
tdk did benefit from the hype of Ledger's death, everybody was talking about Ledger's performance, how sinister and crazy he was, he even got an oscar for his performance.
Beign known for american movies and coming out from another equal good movie (brokeback mountain), his death propeled more interest in the movie.
The proof?
tdk made more money here in usa than the rest of the world.
In no way I'm denying the quality of the movie, it was good, although, the worse of it, it was batman himself and his annoying voice.
The Avengers has massive, Global appeal, unlike tdk, I'm sure it will be a good movie, no doubt, will it make a billion ?
who knows? even it does, good for them;
as Wheddon said: The ticket that I'm most interested in, is the one I'm buying.

NOID - 5/14/2012, 11:18 AM
I think it'll be pretty close, i do think the "kids" factor place a small part.... but the fact that there is 60min of IMAX footage will help... IMAX tickets cost more and everyone i know (myself included) will be seeing this on the big ol 70ft screen... at least three times... but honestly, i'm just glad we got both of these movies this year....
