Tom Hiddleston And Elizabeth Olsen Discuss Loki vs Scarlet Witch

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe's preeminent magic-users, a showdown between Loki and Scarlet Witch would be something to behold. The two stars, weigh in on who they think would win in a magical clash between the Asgardian and Avenger.

With Benedict Cumberbatch still waiting to make his MCU debut as Doctor Strange, the two preeminent magic-users are Loki and Scarlet Witch. But who is more powerful? The Asgardian God of Mischief or the mind-altering manipulator who's rumored to be recieving a power-upgrade in Captain America: Civil War?   Commenting first, Elizabeth Olsen stated, "I think Scarlet Witch would win — she's one of the most powerful people in the universe.  I’m betting on Scarlet Witch".  Tom Hiddleston was quick to counter, "The thing is, you're dealing with someone who's a witch, which is admittedly impressive biographically.  But you put that up against a god, I'm just not sure that there's a fair contest.  He's an immortal being, so my chips are firmly in Loki's corner. "

If and when Loki makes his return to the MCU, it will be interesting to see whether he crosses paths with Wanda Maximoff.  Would Wanda be able to see through Loki's enchantments and warn her Avengers teammates?  Would Loki be able to resist Wanda's mental misdirection?  While Thor and Asgard may be sitting out the superhero fisticuffs in Civil War, surely they'll factor largely in the proceedings that will unfold in Infinity War.  Odds are, these two mystical practitioners should be crossing paths, sooner rather than later.

I'm actually more curious to see if Scarlet Witch uses her mind-bending powers AT ALL in Civil War. After Age of Ultron, that'd be kind of redundant and it could easily turn into an overused, cheap plot device.

I'd bet she won't use those particular skills anymore - hopefully Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely came up with a good character reason/motivation for why she'd want to stay away from that. Maybe she's guilty for letting Hulk loose on Johannesburg, or she's still reeling from Quicksilver's death and it all just leads to her going crazy.

Dammit, I just really want to see Civil War already.

It depends on which version, the MCU or the comics.

I think that in the comics Scarlett Witch would win because she can bend reality. In the MCU I would say that Loki wins because he is simply more powerful.

I'll give my money for Loki, perhaps.. SW is powerful and fatal, but Loki is God and smarter then her. Loki can kill more powerful then him by tricks, mind controlling etc.

It's not the size of the muscles... Loki has tricked Thor so many times ;)

I think we are going to see a more powerful, more insane Scarlet Witch in Civil War and beyond

Olsen has stated that we will see her powers shift from the last time we saw them. We now know she can fly and levitate herself, as she did at the end of AOU for a brief second. I think her going crazy, as Olsen has stated she will wrestle with in Civil War, may make he more powerful and out of control.

It'd be cool if Zemo had a small obsession with her as he has a perverse fixation with the occult and magic

I was extremely disappointed with the depiction of Wanda's powers in AoU.
She seemed to be able to do whatever the plot demanded from her, her powers were just under defined.

I was hoping they'd go back to basics and give her Probability Manipulation (at least to start with)
That would've been so cool and a better way to mess with the Avengers heads by turning their powers and abilities against them instead of the more obvious plot device of her just being able to reveal their deepest fears? So she's the boogeyman? I don't know it just felt poor to me, and no doubt she'll never use that power again.

We haven't really seen the extent of either character's powers, so this isn't a question I think can be answered. On the surface, Scarlet Witch has been portrayed with more powers, whereas Loki has been shown to be dependent on getting others to do what he wants. It's made all the more confusing by the fact that after Loki uses the mind stone, Scarlet Witch gains powers similar to the mind stone.

They made a huge mistake not making them Inhumans.
The Mind gem giving them their powers was just weird, it gave Wanda mind powers but Pietro speed? And made Wanda all powerful.
At least with the Terrigan mist it's a sort of random selection.

I gotta agree with CherryBomb. Making them Inhumans would've been awesome... albeit, could've been seen from a mile away.

@CherryBomb exactly! i agree. Plus, if you put a little more thought on it, you could apply your point of view in Quicksilver AND mostly, in Ultron too. That's why AOU was a let down for me.

@MRCBM56

I still don't understand why they didn't do it.
We know an Inhumans movie is coming (well, they've been super quiet on that front...), and so to plant the seeds for that now would've been perfect to revisit, and Wanda and Pietro being the bridge between Avengers and Inhumans, it's obvious but it's logical and it's not even obvious to those who aren't familiar with the comics. What was Whedon thinking.

you seem to complain that her powers can do what ever the plot needed her to do but then ask for probability manipulation which would also do whatever the plot needed her to do?

Whedon loves to strip power off characters... he doesn't like super powerful beings and has voiced it often. But that's only a matter of working the script properly. His Thor is pathetic.

Well, Joss certainly had no problems displaying Cyclops' power in his run on Astonishing X-Men, as you can see below. Even Wolverine is humbled by this power show.

The AOU producers said in a behind the scenes featurette that her powers are reminiscent of the aether energy and asgardian magic for a reason. Said her powers will continue to grow.

MY THEORY: is that Loki altered the scepter a bit to dispense accurate energy bursts. This is may be tied to Asgardian energy or magic. He used the energy of the mind stone and shifted it into offensive capabilities. I also think Strucker used the mind stone to open up the vast possibilities of the human mind thus unearthing powers within Scarlet Witch (her mind can move objects and harness the energy of the scepter etc.) and QS. The stone openeid up latent abilities; what humanity is capable of evolving into. The Scepter was then used in various HYDRA experiments, and other capabilities such as mind control, astral and energy projection were unearthed.The Mind Stone forces individuals to succumb to the holder’s will by altering their perception, as well as firing blasts of energy. Scarlet Witch literally inherited the power of the mind stone, just a different colored energy (similar to the aether, i assume all the stones are connected somewhat). The staff giving Pietro powers doesn't really explain Quicksilver's speed...my best theory is that Strucker messed with some experiments with speed and then coupled it with the gems ability to open the minds possibilities allowing Pietro's mind to use an advanced intuitive aptitude, to deduce how to make his brain activate his body to move at great speeds and how to use it. ...or the mind gem allowed the people experimenting on them to make breakthroughs in human enhancement by enhancing Strucker and his crews intelligence. QS runs with a blue streak...maybe thats a connection to the scepter energy. You can tell the visual similarities by comparing footage of the two in action. Though, Wanda’s magic also takes similar cues from the Tesseract, Aether, and Orb. There is some evidence -- inconclusive but compelling -- that the twins had latent powers, and that may be why they survived the experiments. The comic prelude to Age of Ultron includes some dialogue between the twins and List, describing the experiments. He uses the term "unlock" to describe the process of enhancing the twins with powers. Whether he was literally talking about bringing out latent abilities, idk. “The fact that you are twins will make the results of this test all the more valuable for my research. Who’s to know what kind of abilities the scepter will unlock in the two of you”. That may also be why they survived.

Wanda seems to have a close connection to the power of the stones. I think Wanda's connection to the stones will play a LARGE part in the future of the MCU. If Wanda's energy is related to the AETHER, that would open up her reality warping powers as the Aether is the Reality Stone.

Its one big mind[frick] haha.

@KingHulk

At least Probability Manipulation is more simple and defined, IMO. I like how her powers worked a lot of the time in Ultimates, to me it was just unique to see how her powers affected people. Thor, who relies so much on his powers, would've been great to see when even he can't control them, Tony, who relies purely on his suits, finding himself powerless when they malfunction, the same for Hulk when he really does go out of control. It's a way to bring their fears to life but in a way that's not just "I can get into your head" which she probably won't use ever again.

0megaDaGr0dd

Oh yeah, of course but at least then she was an actual sorceress, which they could have explored by having her team up with Strange, THEN magic can give her whatever powers the plot requires
