Tom Hiddleston has provided a passionate defence of superhero films in a op-ed piece in Britain's The Guardian newspaper. In an eloquent article he defends the films we all love and enjoy on an intellectual level, stating that:

"Superhero films offer a shared, faithless, modern mythology, through which these truths can be explored. In our increasingly secular society, with so many disparate gods and different faiths, superhero films present a unique canvas upon which our shared hopes, dreams and apocalyptic nightmares can be projected and played out. Ancient societies had anthropomorphic gods: a huge pantheon expanding into centuries of dynastic drama; fathers and sons, martyred heroes, star-crossed lovers, the deaths of kings – stories that taught us of the danger of hubris and the primacy of humility. It's the everyday stuff of every man's life, and we love it. It sounds cliched, but superheroes can be lonely, vain, arrogant and proud. Often they overcome these human frailties for the greater good. The possibility of redemption is right around the corner, but we have to earn it.

The Hulk is the perfect metaphor for our fear of anger; its destructive consequences, its consuming fire. There's not a soul on this earth who hasn't wanted to "Hulk smash" something in their lives. And when the heat of rage cools, all that we are left with is shame and regret. Bruce Banner, the Hulk's humble alter ego, is as appalled by his anger as we are. That other superhero Bruce – Wayne – is the superhero-Hamlet: a brooding soul, misunderstood, alone, for ever condemned to avenge the unjust murder of his parents. Captain America is a poster boy for martial heroism in military combat: the natural leader, the war hero. Spiderman is the eternal adolescent – Peter Parker's arachnid counterpart is an embodiment of his best-kept secret – his independent thought and power."

It's a fantastic article, which will hopefully help in some small way to removing the 'they're all just for kids' stigma that a lot of people still attach to comic book films, particularly here in Britain. Well done Tom!

The stigma that the are just for kids will remain as long as fanboys refuse to accept diversity in story telling and genre.

Moon, Star Wars and Alien are all science fiction movies but one is a drama, one is a space opera and one is a horror movie. Yet people view 'comic book movie' as a strict genre and claim The Dark Knight isn't a CBM but a crime thriller when in actual fact it is both.

Fantastic 4 should be a sci-fi adventure just as Green Lantern should have been a space opera. When you tell the same story just with different powers thats when stuff gets old quick.

That's honestly a very good point, I really never thought of it like that. I'm gonna stop saying that TDKR isn't a CBM.

Hiddleston is a genius BTW

Wow, he is certainly a well spoken and intelligent guy. I would need to spend a day in a room with a thesaurus to write what he said lol.

Just the fact that we have an actor like him in a CBM is testament to the fact that they can be more than just special effects-laden juvenile movies.

@johnnysnow: Many words in the English language have different spellings in the UK, Canada and America. Being that this is the world wide web, we are going to see them all on this site. Educate yourself brother:

Damn!!! Marvel got it so right when they hired this guy. He's just too damn good. Every time he speaks, the executives at Marvel celebrate because his words remind them of how good the decision to hire him was.
