Update On The Avengers Currently Shooting In Cleveland

Nothing too revealing here but it's nice to find out what the actors are up to during their off hours from filming The Avengers in Cleveland.

I've been doing some research and talking to sources and it appears that the Avengers time in Cleveland will be coming to a close real soon. But filming was still going strong last night as a mysterious scene was filmed on the Detroit-Superior (Veterans Memorial) Bridge. Here's some local coverage of what's going on and what some of the star actors were up to during their down time.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The filming of "The Avengers" switched locations Wednesday night from Public Square to the lower level of the Detroit-Superior (Veterans Memorial) Bridge.

Blue lights, trucks and workers could be seen at times at both ends of the bridge over the Cuyahoga River, but little else.

It's an out-in-the-open yet out-of-the-way place just west of Public Square, which was completely dark Wednesday night. Even the streetlights were out, which was odd since the night before it was well lit and bustling with film crews and onlookers.

Filming is expected to resume Thursday night at Public Square, which has been remodeled to resemble a German beer garden in Stuttgart. The former Higbee's Building is doubling as an opera house. In filming earlier this week, hundreds of extras wearing formal garb exited the opera house and ran in terror as Loki, the Norse god of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston), blasted them with a magical lance.

Now that filming is done on East Ninth Street, crews are busy cleaning up the debris created when Thor and Captain America were fighting unidentified villains.

Meanwhile, the stars of the movie need something to do when they are not working, and they turned up in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood Monday night.

Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Chris Evans (Captain America) went to Edison's Pub on Professor Street and kicked back with some friends.

An Edison's Pub employee said they were joined by Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

"It was 'open mike' night and there were not very many people here," said the employee, who did not want to give her name. "Scarlett got up and sang 'Rocky Raccoon.' "

(That's a Beatles song off the White Album.)

A Cleveland woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she spotted Johansson and Evans and two friends at the Ritz-Carlton hotel desk asking for suggestions of where to go for dinner and drinks.

"We went there (Edison's) and met them," the woman said. "They were great, so friendly and outgoing. We were there for quite a while. Scarlett sang a song and sounded pretty good."

As they left, Evans climbed onto the bicycle sculpture outside the pub, a common practice.

Thursday, a group of patients from the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation program at MetroHealth Medical Center will make a field trip to Public Square to see the movie set at 11:30 a.m.

"The group will try to get a glimpse of the action and enjoy lunch at Tower City," Christina Karas, the hospital's spokeswoman, said in an email. "It's a fun outing for a group of patients who have been in the hospital for several weeks this summer. These field trips help the patients learn how to navigate their wheelchairs in public settings."

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based upon the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which crosses over several Marvel superhero films including Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans. The Avengers is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2012 and tells the story of Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., who recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August.

Evans enjoying one of lifes simple pleasures - having a few and climbing on public property.

@ Greengo: Condorman ftw! It takes balls to base your superhero persona on the eagle's ugly cousin lol.

Wonder what kind of powers Condoman would have. Maybe the power of restictive rules and inability to get resale value in a down market!

@ TyrannicalOverlord: alright that's enough high-brow humour college boy (jk lol).

Condorman's powers include resistance to recovery efforts to re-populate his species. His weaknesses include loss of habitat and pollution. His arch-nemesis is Poacher-man. Ok I'll stop.

@ Nolanite: I agree Scar-jo is smokin. I think that list was more for "established" action heroines, but the problem is they are mostly too old now. Scar-jo just hit the action scene with IM2. (yeah there was The Island but that was mostly just running away from stuff).

Oh no! It's Poacher man! Where's Condorman?!

He's still out on Hwy 10 getting his breakfast. Mmm, roadkill... ;-)
