BARB WIRE: Pamela Anderson's Cult Classic Comic Book Movie Is Getting A 4K UHD SteelBook Release

Based on the Dark Horse Comics series, Barb Wire was quickly forgotten after being released in theaters in the mid-90s, but the beloved cult classic starring Pamela Anderson is now getting a 4K SteelBook.

Barb Wire is finally being released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, meaning we'll finally be able to watch the critically panned cult classic in the highest definition possible.

German company Turbine Medien is responsible for this SteelBook, likely meaning the collectors among you will need to figure out a way to import this thing. However, with so much new content on the disc, we'd expect an official U.S. release release to eventually follow.

In Barb Wire, "a sexy nightclub owner, Barb Wire (Pamela Anderson Lee) moonlights as a mercenary in Steel Harbor, one of the last free zones in the now fascist United States. When scientist Cora Devonshire (Victoria Rowell) wanders into Barb's establishment, she gets roped into a top-secret government plot involving biological weapons."

"Soon Barb is reunited with her old flame Axel Hood (Temuera Morrison), who is now Cora's husband and a guerrilla fighter, resulting in plenty of tense action."

The movie, which was once expected to be Pamela Anderson's big break as a movie star, has 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, and made only $3.8 million on a $23 million budget.

Originally published by Dark Horse Comics imprint "Comics Greatest World," the original Barb Wire series ran for nine issues between 1994 and 1995, with a four-issue miniseries following in 1996 (the same year the Barb Wire movie was released).

In her Netflix documentary, Pamela, A Love Story, the Baywatch icon said, "I have no idea what happened in that movie. I don’t think anyone does." She'd later add, "Again, I like the outfit. I like the hair and makeup. A lot of times I’ll go, 'Wait, that really happened? How could that possibly happen? I’m just in shock.' So now I have the backup because the documentary is there."

Here's what you can expect from Barb Wire's 4K SteelBook ahead of its May 21 debut:

  • NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM THE ORIGINAL CAMERA NEGATIVE
  • DOLBY VISION/HDR PRESENTATION OF THE FILM

Whenever dudes on here are complaining about the current crop of comic book movies, I just keep thinking back to the 90s when THIS was what we had to get excited about. Some of y'all have no idea how good you have it.

@Clintthahamster - I know, right?

I grew up in an era when Beastmaster, Hawk the Slayer and Krull were the height of fantasy film!

@Clintthahamster - The problem is, we got 2004 (starting with Batman Begins) though 2018 (Infinity War) During that era, we got some truly genre defining entries from Marvel, DC, and Fox.

Why would we be ok with the genre regressing and getting worse? Sure it may not be as bad as it was in the 90’s. But even if you look at the 00’s and all the disasters it had - Catwoman, Elektra, Fantastic Four 2, etc - it still had far more gems coming out than the last 5 years have.

And to your point, some of the modern stuff is just mediocre. And it probably gets more hate than it deserves.

But a lot of it is truly bad. The only thing that separates trash like The Marvels, Aquaman 2, Ant Man 3, Morbius, etc etc from the bad stuff that came out in the 90’s and 00’s is a higher VFX budget.

@mountainman - Except The Marvels and Ant Man 3 weren't actually that bad. IMO, they fall into your earlier category, "just mediocre. And it probably gets more hate than it deserves." If you expect every CBM to be DKR or Winter Soldier, sure, you're going to be disappointed. But as someone who BEGGED his dad to get the Dolph Lundgren Punisher on PPV, and who set the VCR to record every Hulk TV movie, I'm perfectly willing to excuse some C+ popcorn action.

@mountainman - *I think I meant DK, not DKR. I get my abbreviations mixed up sometimes.

My point is, I'll always be happy to have more comic book movies, even if some-or even most–of them are bad, because that's how it's always been, from my experience.

@Clintthahamster - I found all the movies I referenced to be truly bad movies. Ones I did not enjoy watching at all. Ones that are not doing the genre any favors.

Obviously opinions differ, but I am someone that doesn’t have endless time to watch movies and shows. Sometimes I’ll watch a “bad” one if I’m bored. But it’s pretty obvious more and more people are turning from the genre due to declining quality.

Not everything has to be TDK. You’re right. A small handful of CBMs ever have achieved that level of greatness. But the last 5 years have had far more misses than hits.

@mountainman - I think we're mostly in agreement, just a question of semantics. I'm probably overly sensitive to folks saying something is "bad" when what they mean is "I didn't like it." There are plenty of objectively good works of art that I don't enjoy, but I wouldn't say that they're bad.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/25/2024, 10:55 AM
@Clintthahamster - Objective assessment of the quality of art is impossible. You can get a consensus opinion or hear from “experts” but all enjoyment of art is subjective.

While you’re right that someone saying “all of X is bad” is just assigning their opinion as an objective fact.

It is semantics and is going back and forth about our opinions is likely not productivs. I just have a different perspective on people that dislike modern CBMs, as I’m one of them. You get used to more consistent quality and a dip is quite noticeable.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 3/25/2024, 11:14 AM
@mountainman - Oh, there's no arguing that the quality has slipped from the heights of Phases 2-3. I just disagree that it's as grim as some folks make it out to be.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/25/2024, 11:23 AM
@Clintthahamster - I agree with you there.

And here’s my deal.

I really enjoyed the first two episodes of X-Men 97. If that keeps up the whole season, it will be my favorite marvel show ever and one of the best Disney produced Marvel pieces of media ever.

Deadpool 3 could really impress me too, which is yet to be seen.

If they produce good content I’m happy to say so. Was glad to praise GOTG3 last year.

Was happy to praise WWBN two years ago.

Was happy that Spiderverse was good.

I WANT good content. I don’t want to dislike it. I am rooting for it

But I can’t force myself to like something I don’t like.

@mountainman - "I WANT good content. I don’t want to dislike it. I am rooting for it"

That at least sets you apart from a lot of the dudes on here.

mountainman - 3/25/2024, 12:18 PM
@Clintthahamster - You may not agree with me on this, but I actually think everyone wants good content. Some people just don’t articulate their dissatisfaction well.

Look at the sheer volume of people who complain about all sorts of topics online and you can see that this is just an unfortunate way that many people use the internet. They vent, they complain, they talk down on those with different opinions, they pick fights, etc.

It’s done by people of all sexes, races sexualities, nations of origin, and ages. People complain. And now with internet forums and social media, people have. bullhorn for their thoughts.

I have a belief that if these companies produce more consistently quality content you’ll hear less of it. Not none, but less.

Going back to the X-Men 97 example, I’ve been hearing much less negativity about that as I have about any comic property in years. Not none mind you. You still hear it. But much much less than other projects. A similar thing happened for Across the Spiderverse. So quality content beats a lot of the negativity down.

@mountainman - I just don't know how else we're supposed to take comments like "I can't wait to watch this bomb," especially when the comments are made immediately after a movie is announced, before it goes into production. That's not "wanting good content," IMO. It's hoping for bad content.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/25/2024, 1:07 PM
@Clintthahamster - From a psychological perspective I could see someone saying that who may want the company to produce projects they like vs recent ones they did not and the new one they want to bomb seems similar to the ones they disliked.

But that’s neither here nor there.

I don’t like comments like that. I don’t mind pre release criticism, but be specific about what you see that you don’t like.
