BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL Multi-Part Animated Adaptation Sets World Premiere For Annecy Festival This June

Warner Bros. Animation, DC Studios, and Warner Home Entertainment are bringing the first part of their Batman: Knightfall animated adaptation to France’s Annecy Animation Festival this June...

Last year, we got word that Warner Bros. Animation, DC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment were developing a multi-part animated adaptation of the iconic Batman '90s comic book storyline that introduced Bane, Knightfall, and the movie's world premiere has now been set.

According to Variety, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall will debut during France’s Annecy Animation Festival this June.

Directed by Jeff Wamester (Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths), the project is described as “the first installment of a multi-part animated event bringing to life one of the most iconic and beloved runs in the rich history of Batman comics.”

The Knightfall comic book saga consisted of three parts — Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd — and saw the Dark Knight meet his match in the form of the super-strong villain known as Bane, who managed to "break the Bat." With Bruce Wayne out of action, the far more violent and unstable Azrael took up the mantle of Batman.

This marks the first time Knightfall will be adapted in full, although Christopher Nolan did use elements of the story for The Dark Knight Rises, with Tom Hardy's Bane breaking Batman's (Christian Bale) back after their one-sided brawl.

Bane creator Chuck Dixon had the following to say about the debuting villain in a 2012 interview.

"Knightfall was in the planning for a few months and we were all working on the issues leading up to it. We all understood that we wanted to create a brand new villain to break Batman’s back but nothing had been discussed about him. Denny thought we should come out the other end of the stunt with a new bad guy. A lot of the elements of the event had been worked out around the creation of this new character but no ideas had been put forward by anyone about who this new badass would be. We were treating him as a blank that needed to be filled in."

"We knew we would basically be replacing KGBeast in the role of the brutal- but-intelligent bad guy. KGBeast had become old news with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The KG-Beast used to be. We also knew that he would be powered by Venom, the addictive super-steroid that Denny had come up with for an arc in Legends of the Dark Knight. And Denny promoted the idea of creating new villains with each event in the hopes of lightning striking. I liked this idea because I always thought DC’s villain bench was weak unlike Marvel where there are hundreds of great bad guys to choose from. I think that’s still true today especially with DC’s penchant for knocking off characters left and right."

Annecy has also announced that the first two episodes of the new Ghost in the Shell series will premiere during the event.

You can check out the first official title art below.

The official plot synopsis for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall reads: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

The voice cast has not been announced. Rick Morales serves as Supervising Producer alongside Producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are Executive Producers.

DC has always thrived in animation. Hopefully, this will be a return to form.

@InfinitePunches - spot on.

There goes hope.

@InfinitePunches - They haven't thrived since 2014.

@GuardianAngel - I have some respect for the guy. Crisis is impossible to adapt, especially when you have next to no buildup or investment in the characters, and he did a halfway decent job considering what little he had to work with.

Plus he adapted Emerald Twilight and Zero Hour better than I thought possible in Beware my Power.

This could be good. Especially if they put some effort into the animation, something that was sorely lacking in the Tomorrowverse.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 2014? Come on. We've gotten some quality stuff since then.

Gods and Monsters. SS Hell to Pay. Seasons 3 and 4 of Young Justice. My Adventures with Superman. JL vs the Fatal Five. Death of Superman. WW Bloodlines. Soul of the Dragon. Apokolips War. Watchmen.

The last couple years have been pretty dry, but the fact that they're finally adapting Knightfall makes me think they're investing in animation again.

@InfinitePunches - I wouldn't call a handful of good ones out of the like 40 they've made between then and now thriving. Compare that to the animated films between 2007 and 2014 where every single one was a banger. They stopped caring about trying to recreate the comics faithfully, and kept twisting them to fit within their shitty shared universes, using the same character designs, the same art style, and same voice actors. And the animation quality dropped too, often looking choppy.

The standalone ones like you mentioned have mostly been great, because those are the only ones reminiscent of the old DC animation. Knightfall being categorized as Standalone is promising to hear, but I'm still wary of the director choice.

I've been looking forward to an adaption of this for years; hopefully No Man's Land won't be too far behind.

Terrific! Imagine if Marvel did this more than a handful of times. If they aren't going to adapt the comics in live action, show them in other ways

@bobevanz - 100% !! Twice now they [frick]ed up the coming of Galactus imagine a Kirby inspired animated movie faithfully adapting the story. They already proven this with X-men 97

Stoked for this! I just hope the animation is on par with the Dark Knight returns movie. DC animation is hit or miss.

Cool , interested to see what it looks like as of now and to
find out who the voice cast is…

I gotta catch up on some of the recent animated films from the Tomorrowverse since I enjoyed those unlike the New 52 films prior which I did not.

The last one I saw was Green Lantern:Beware My Power which was decent imo…

Do we know if this is in the same continuity or its own thing?.

I loved how Bane was portrayed in this storyline, too many writers forget that he's a tactical genius and not just some muscle-bound villain. Looking forward to it.
