DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have repeatedly said that they want to tell as many different types of stories in and around the DCU as possible. Among the most intriguing is Swaybox's animated Dynamic Duo.
The movie will feature a combination of miniatures, models, puppetry, animatronics and computer animation. It may or may not be set in the DCU, but is expected to be a standalone, out-of-continuity adventure similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Today, The InSneider is reporting that Dynamic Duo has cast The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon star Mason Thames as Dick Grayson. Ghostbusters: Afterlife and The Walking Dead: Dead City star Logan Kim will play Jason Todd, with Marsai Martin (G20) cast as Barbara Gordon.
Here's where things get really interesting, though: Wonder Woman and Star Trek star Chris Pine has been offered the role of Batman.
Does that mean he's playing the DCU's Dark Knight? Gunn has waxed lyrical about the same actors playing characters in live-action and animation, but Dynamic Duo isn't set in the DCU. Instead, it will be a standalone Elseworlds tale, as the Man of Tomorrow director first confirmed in January.
Who will Gunn cast in The Brave and the Bold? That remains to be seen, but finding Bruce Wayne doesn't currently appear to be a priority for the filmmaker.
Guardians of the Galaxy star Lee Pace, who is often fan-cast as Batman, also looks set to reunite with Gunn, a she's in line to play Red Hood One, the leader of the Red Hood gang. If Dynamic Duo follows the comics, we can expect him to become The Joker. There are some great casting picks here, and the fact that they're happening in a standalone animated project may frustrate some fans.
Warner Bros. Animation revealed at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival that the Dynamic Duo "follows Jason [and] Dick as [a couple] of street rats who name themselves the 'dynamic duo.'" Eventually, they go their separate ways, with Dick joining Batman as Robin and Jason becoming a member of the Red Hood gang.
"Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, Dynamic Duo, the story of Robin...or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd," Gunn said when then movie was announced in 2024. "The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th and Idaho. This is something special."
Dynamic Duo is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2028.
