BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER HBO Max Animated Series Adds Ed Brubaker As Writer & Exec Producer

It was recently announced that new Batman animated series, Caped Crusader, is being developed for HBO Max, and acclaimed comic book writer Ed Brubaker has now been added to the creative team.

Early last year, the news broke that a new Batman animated series from Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves was in the works for the HBO Max streaming service, and the creative team has now added acclaimed writer Ed Brubaker.

THR reports that Brubaker will run the Caped Crusader writers room as Timm's "right hand," and will also receive an executive producer credit. Details on the 10-episode series are few and far between, but it is expected to be inspired by the classic '90s Batman: The Animated Series, even though it won't be a direct continuation. The goal of the show is to “once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”

“Here’s something few people know, but the original Batman: The Animated Series was one of the things that made me want to write superhero comics in general, and Batman in particular,” Brubaker said in a statement. “If not for what Bruce Timm and all the talented writers and artists did with that show, things like my revamp of Catwoman with Darwyn Cooke (who worked on BTAS) and Gotham Central with Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, would never have happened. So when Bruce Timm offered me the chance to come work on this new reimagining of Batman with him, James Tucker, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, I jumped at it.”

The writer also revealed that Caped Crusader will be a more "pulpy take on the character," and that this "new way of looking at the world of Gotham, set in the past but viewed through a modern lens really sold me."

No premiere date has been announced, but you can check out the previously released artwork below.
