Clayface BTS Photos Reveal Gnarly Practical "Melting" Matt Hagen As DCU Movie Crosses $90M Worldwide

Some horrifying new behind-the-scenes photos reveal how Clayface brought Matt Hagen's gruesome melting scene to life, as the DCU horror movie passes $90 million at the worldwide box office.

Some new behind-the-scenes photos from Clayface have been revealed, courtesy of Tom Rhys Harries' stunt double, Dale White. In them, we see how the final confrontation between Matt Hagen and Dr. Caitlin Corr was created, including a practical Clayface...puddle?

After being tased by the scientist, Matt started falling apart, only to seemingly be finished off for good when Corr deactivated the nanobots in his bloodstream. Of course, the movie later reveals he survived their run-in, though his true face had become that of a hideous monster.

While Matt's melting scene appeared to be largely CGI, we see here that a practical stand-in was created; given that White shared the photo, it's possible he was inside the "suit."

On the box office front, Clayface has now passed $90.6 million at the worldwide box office. The R-rated body horror has benefited from a solid day-to-day hold, despite its relatively modest first and second weekends in theaters.

Exhibitor Relations Co. is still arguing that Clayface is performing poorly, though, writing that the movie "isn't long for this box office world" after it suffered a -44% drop on Tuesday compared to the week before. In comparison, "no other film in the top five dropped more than -33%."

While arguments continue about whether Clayface should be judged as a comic book or horror movie, its $90 million haul places it well above Kraven the Hunter ($62 million), but below Madame Web ($100 million), Supergirl ($126 million), and Morbius ($167 million). It was, however, considerably cheaper to produce than all of them.

It's worth noting that Clayface has beaten The Substance ($77 million), though its production budget was significantly lower ($18 million vs. $44 million).

Check out these new behind-the-scenes photos from the DCU movie in the Instagram gallery below.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

This movie will flop at worst or barely break even at best and people will still shill for Gunn and the DCU. What spell does this man have on people?

Even if this HAD been a critical and commercial success, I don't think DC/Warners possess the business acumen to jump on it.

You know, fast-track a sequel that included other villains or (some version of) Batman or DC hero.

They'd have just left it there to gather dust while they had committee meetings, or whatever it is they do behind closed doors.
