Clayface: Possible Early Reactions Compare DCU Horror Movie To Obsession — But There's A Catch

Clayface has earned enthusiastic early reactions, but should DC fans be wary? With the review embargo still weeks away, we're taking these promising first impressions with a pinch of salt.

DC Studios has had a challenging year, with Supergirl proving both a critical and commercial disappointment after the far more successful Superman last July.

Lanterns, meanwhile, has received positive reviews and strong ratings, but divided an already fractured fanbase. Now, all eyes are on Clayface to see whether the $40 million horror movie can turn a profit and prove the DCU's doubters wrong.

An early screening took place last night, and a couple of early reactions have surfaced on social media. The DC Film News fan account has shared what one attendee told them, with the person enthusing, "We haven’t felt like this leaving a movie since Obsession."

Obsession is one of the best movies of 2026, so that's quite a compliment. Meanwhile, "AnniesHorror," a horror fan with 5.29K YouTube subscribers, has hailed the movie as "f***ing awesome."

Here's the catch: this was clearly a fan/influencer screening meant to generate the same overwhelmingly positive reviews we saw for Supergirl before critics started weighing in. It's also worth noting that the review embargo doesn't lift until Wednesday, October 21, a day before Thursday preview screenings (that was the case for the Woman of Tomorrow's movie, too).

Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, James Watkins, and Peter Safran attended the screening, and we often see far more positive social media reactions when fans—and critics—have been treated to a meet-and-greet with celebrities

So, for now, we'll have to wait and see. Early box office tracking for Clayface is on the low side, but it's far too soon to write this one off. If nothing else, next summer's Man of Tomorrow will almost certainly be a hit for DC Studios.

Stay tuned for more on Clayface as we have it.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult-favourite villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit. Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Chantal Nong Vo, Lars P. Winther, Rafi Crohn and Paul Ritchie executive producing.

Watkins' creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris and costume designer Keith Madden. Volker Bertelmann (Conclave) is the movie's composer.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

"We haven’t felt like this leaving a movie since Obsession."

So like 2 months? lol such a weird thing to say when it came out in may. I never really thought about how much influencers actually well influence things. Life is insane right now.

Anyways, I don’t know if I’ll check clayface out in theaters I’m not big on that genre but maybe. We’ll see

The fan account that is "totally" not biased or spinning narratives and renaming it "influence" telling us that. LMAO.

Idk who runs that shit, but I commend you for trying to compare it to Obsession. Bold but incredibly stupid

@OneMoreTime - obsession was just a cold, calculating, super uncomfortable burn. Not scary. Good film, but I don't want to sit through it again.

one thing I've learned in my lifetime is to never let someone else dictate your opinion of something

I hope this movie does well for the fans but I won't be seeing this. I'm not a body horror/horror movie fan

Clintthahamster - 10/12/2026, 10:12 AM
@ProudPatriot76 - Folks should absolutely not let others dictate their opinion of something, but sadly, that's pretty much par for the course these days. So many people just parroting what their favorite youtuber has said about movies before they're even screened for critics, and sometimes before they're even in production. Not to say that there's no role for legitimate film critics, but these influencer screenings are not that.

As for body horror, I totally understand why it's not for everyone, but I dig it. I should probably talk to my therapist about that . . .
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 10/12/2026, 12:27 PM
@ProudPatriot76 - it’s hard not to be influenced in this day and age. Social media just has us plugged in to what someone says all the time I think the influence is subconscious at times. I try to unplug now as much as possible or just don’t read certain things. We’re getting closer to idiocracy than anyone would admit
ProudPatriot76
ProudPatriot76 - 10/12/2026, 12:32 PM
@MyCoolYoung - sadly, you and @Clintthahamster are both correct. we (as a society) put far too much emphasis on other's thoughts without forming our own. that's my issue with Rotten Tomatoes and the way this site treats their reviews like Gospel. if a movie/show looks good, I'm going to watch it. I've loved 90% Rotten movies and hated 90% Fresh movies at the same time.

Clintthahamster - 10/12/2026, 2:08 PM
@ProudPatriot76 - I've found it's good to balance the Critic and Audience scores on RT to see what's really going on . . .

High Critic Score + High Audience Score = All around great movie.
High Critic Score + Low Audience Score = "Challenging"/"Artsy" movie that is accomplished but maybe not a lot of fun.
Low Critic Score + High Audience Score = Brainless popcorn movie, objectively bad but probably lots of fun
Low Critic Score + Low Audience Score = Absolute garbage with nothing to recommend it.

Obviously those are overly broad, and honestly, I don't really base anything off of RT scores to begin with. If I want to see a thing, I see it. I only check reviews if I'm trying to bring other folks along.

Of all the articles about early screenings and similar we've had here, I think this is the first one where the fact the reviews might be biased is defined as a catch. I may be remembering wrong of course, but could it be because we're talking about a dcu movie?
Rexotron
Rexotron - 10/12/2026, 10:27 AM
@roboticJohnson - You are not the only one who thinks that! Haha. I was literally thinking "wait, that's the catch?" This catch didnt exist all the other times Wilding writes articles about early screener. He might mention the caveat in the article. But he doesnt go this deep into it, let alone put it in the headline. He cant help but show off his illegitimacy.
WhatIfRickJames
WhatIfRickJames - 10/12/2026, 10:52 AM
@Rexotron - literally the guy who is saying these influencers are biased is easily the most biased.

I love how he paints this gotcha moment like hay happened with Supergirl. Nice sleuthing Sherlock
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 10/12/2026, 10:58 AM
@roboticJohnson - it completely is. The DC hatred on this site by Josh and the others is obvious. Every DC article comes with a "catch" when it starts out positive. For MCU and other sources? Could be a garbage movie like Eternals or New Mutants but there's always a catch of "positivity" sprinkled throughout the article.
Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/12/2026, 1:15 PM
@roboticJohnson - The catch is that this is a DCU movie so Josh will take nearly any negative development at face value while any positive development gets scrutinized and approached with heavy skepticism.

Same thing with him attempting to use comic book authors as a voice of authority regarding Lanterns’ polarizing finale. I asked if he’s done the same for all MCU, DCEU, and standalone comic films and got no response.

There is zero chance this is in the same realm as Obsession
epc1122
epc1122 - 10/12/2026, 10:04 AM
@KurtCrawler - that’s not realistic. Of course there’s a chance, if you wrote there’s a 1% chance that would be more feasible for your outlook. Terrifier ended up with two sequels that were released and a new one on the way. 🤷‍♂️

Think using influencers to generate hype for horror movies is a smart move. I feel that any exposure to Obsession (or any horror movie of late) came through social media
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 10/12/2026, 11:02 AM

I’m assuming that the Obsession reference is about the shock of it not the actual plot of the movie.

Still a weird take but I don’t think that any rational person thinks that these two are similar in any way.
