Clayface is set to hit theaters very soon, and DC Studios has now released the first clip from James Watkins' DCU horror movie.

The scene finds Matt Hagen starting to panic when his face begins to transform mid-flight. When his eyes close over, he makes his way to the lavatory and prepares to cut his eyelids open with a pair of scissors.

We also have a new international TV spot and a sample of Volker Bertelmann's "Clayface Theme."

Clayface is said to have gone over very well with test screening audiences, drawing comparisons to Joker, Vanilla Sky, The Substance, and, interestingly, The Incredible Hulk

James Gunn recently became very defensive when someone on Threads wrote, "Who the F*ck asked for a Clayface movie?"

"Who tf asked for Back to the Future? Casablanca? There's Something About Mary? Pan's Labyrinth? Fury Road? Weapons? The Matrix? Although it may seem like it, Hollywood isn't a place where the only way to make a movie is the public voting on what IP they want to see that they've seen countless times before. Sometimes someone – in this case initially Mike Flanagan and then James Watkins and Hossein Amini – were inspired by a relatively little known fictional character and crafted what I believe is a very special story around that character. I'd take that inspiration a thousand times over some writer trying to make a buck by writing a listless screenplay about a majorly popular character he or she has no passion or feel for."

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

It does look a little meh. But it should turn a profit. It cost 2¢ to make and it's got Halloween to itself in a year when low-budget horror movies are all the rage. If this isn't the most successful movie of the year just by default then there's something wrong with the DCU... so that could actually happen lol. Brace yourself.

@thedrudo - I mean it surely can't do worse than Supergirl, but I meant movie in general. Having said that I'm just now remembering mega-hits like The Odyssey and Spider-Man. So that was a rather silly statement really.

But lets say that it should at least be the most successful movie under $50M.

I am going to see this and hope it’s both gross and great.

Is it true that this is a metaphor for James Gunn watching his DCFU melting with nothing to hang his hat on except for an average at best Superman movie?

You waited all this time to finally include what James Gunn had to say about people who expect movies to come out, want certain things to come out, and are disappointed when other things come out. This was obviously a dig at baldy and how they decide movies.
"Who tf asked for Back to the Future? Casablanca? There's Something About Mary? Pan's Labyrinth? Fury Road? Weapons? The Matrix? No one gives a [frick] about them. The loud minority will NEVER BE SATISFIED. It's best to pretend they aren't even there

I agree with Gunn on this one. Original ideas spearheaded by artists is WAY more interesting to me than another ip to film. For one, a Clayface film will make money and be different and both of those reasons make it a smart move. Yes, we want Batman but this will give us a taste of DCU Gotham and maybe even more Easter eggs and characters than we realize. Who knows. But what if it’s just a good movie on its own 🤷‍♂️

I have a funny feeling that this movie will surprise a whole lot of people.

Obviously the story was made by one of the greatest horror directors ever. The only thing that they need to do is include something about Batman. At least a small tease or acknowledge that he is around doing his own thing.

I'm also excited to see how they portray Gotham City. The way they show it will end up being how it is carried on forward.

I don't think they would be so stupid to not include something about him. They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't.

Nolanite out

@Nolanite - These are the same people who made a Green Lantern show without Green Lantern. I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Man , eye stuff gives me the ick so the clip worked for me in that regard (also the turbulent plane is a nice way to build tension)…

Anyway , the movie seems like it could be good so looking forward to checking the film out!!.

P.S: The score sounds..fine.
