Clayface's $43M Global Opening Draws Comparisons To Morbius — But Are They Unfair?

Clayface has drawn comparisons to Morbius after its $43 million global debut. But with a lower budget and far better reviews, can DC's latest horror movie defy expectations and turn a profit?

Clayface opened in theaters this weekend with $24 million in North America and $19 million internationally. This is below DC Studios' expectations, as Variety confirms that the studio had expected a $25 million to $35 million start in the U.S. Overseas, the hope was that it would kick off its run with $20 million to $25 million.

The movie cost $44 million to produce, though there's still no word on how much was spent on marketing. Regardless, with a $43 million global bow, Clayface has nearly matched its production budget in one weekend (for context, to account for marketing and theater revenue splits, the movie needs roughly $80 million to $100 million worldwide to actually achieve that).

Exhibitor Relations Co.'s Jeff Bock, one of the most trusted box office analysts in the field, has caused quite a stir on social media today by likening Clayface's opening weekend to Morbius.

Writing that "the DC brand itself is in a freefall," Bock added, "You know what really sucks: even Morbius opened with $39M." Later stating that DC is "flailing," he responded to fans who felt he was being unfair on the movie by explaining:

"The budget isn’t really a point worth defending in regards to Clayface. Listen, even Morbius debuted with $39M. Clayface, which is drawn from one of the biggest IP brands in the world, dropped with $15M less than Sony's horror spinoff."

"A lower budget may limit the financial damage, but in no way does it create audience demand. And that's the point. Choosing Clayface as the DCU’s third film was the misstep. Oh, and making 3 out of 4 set in the Superman universe. Yes, the DC brand is in trouble. What's new?"

Is it a fair comparison? I caught some flak for concluding my review by saying, "[Clayface] should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment." Bock's remarks, while harsh for a movie that's received glowing audience scores, are not factually incorrect.

Morbius opened to $39 million domestically against a $75 million production budget, while Clayface debuted with $24 million against a $44 million budget. That's roughly 52% vs. 55% of their respective budgets in opening-weekend U.S. grosses. The openings were different sizes, but proportionally, the same.

The biggest difference is that Clayface has received vastly better reviews from both critics and fans. Provided that translates to ticket sales next weekend, then the R-rated DCU movie can shrug off these comparisons and ultimately turn a tidy profit for DC Studios. For more on how it can achieve that, read our previous breakdown here.

@UltronIO - ULTRONNN 😭😭 bro, you’re now pre-emptively arguing with me in articles I HAVEN’T EVEN COMMENTED ON YET??? LMAOOOOO. And I’m the one who’s supposedly obsessed? 💀💀

The way you’ve gone from white-knighting for Josh to keeping tabs on where I might show up next is genuinely hilarious. At this point, I’m starting to think this is less about defending Josh and more about your personal crush with me. You’re anticipating my comments before I even make them, my guy, look at yourself. 😭

Bro really appointed himself Josh’s unpaid bodyguard and somehow made ME his full-time occupation. Please, I’m begging you, take a break from thinking about me. This level of dedication is starting to look like a fan account. 💀🤣

I mean you can say different expectations and a smaller budget and it will be financially successful all you want but an opening 13 million below Supergirl doesn’t scream this is a success for DC movies to me. I think they need to figure some stuff out over there.

@Mrnorth1921 - So what? We going to grade DC movies on a curve? Less people saw this than saw a much maligned DC film from earlier this year. And are we suddenly going to be pretend other R rated horror movies didn’t make a lot of money this year?
ShimmyShimmyYA

@TheUnworthyThor - grading movies based on genre and rating has always been a thing , studios don’t judge things based on weird fandom wars

@TheUnworthyThor -because ? It’s a horror movie that’s rated r you’re trying judge it’s performance based on something its not just cause it belongs to a franchise
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 10/25/2026, 6:16 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - What are you talking about? Resident Evil is an R rated horror movie that just opened to 60 million dollars. Backrooms and Obsession r rated horror movies that were huge hits this year. This movie opened to less than Other Mommy, a critically reviled movie without the benefit of the DC name.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 10/25/2026, 6:18 PM
@TheUnworthyThor - other R rated movies were don’t by high tier directors and based off popular franchises. Clayface is a b-list Batman villain. Not many people know about him save for comic nerds.

TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 10/25/2026, 6:25 PM
@Mrnorth1921 - That is some hardcore cope. Oh no this horror movie can’t compete with those other horror movies, it only has the backing of the DC brand and Warner Brothers. It doesn’t matter what tier of Batman villain he is, that association should only be beneficial against an original horror movie.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 10/25/2026, 9:41 PM
@TheUnworthyThor - but again, this isn’t joker or penguin, or riddler or bane. Those are the villains people know. Clayface wouldn’t be in the top ten if Batman villains.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 10/25/2026, 10:20 PM
@Mrnorth1921 - I agree that he is borderline top twenty. But this movie opened to less than Other Mommy, a R-rated horror movie that not’s part of a franchise and has a 19% Rotten Tomatoes score. Like how could this be anything other than disappointing? If they were only going after horror fans it’s disappointing. If they were only going after comic book fans it’s disappointing. And they had the chance to draw both.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 10/25/2026, 3:34 PM
Movie cost 33 million to make and if we include promotion. Maybe 50-60 million? Morbius cost like 75-84 million plus promotions? 100-120? Not that bad for Clayface.

I think one of the biggest issues with the Clayface vs. Morbius comparisons is how disproportionate, overstated, and prematurely definitive the conclusions have become relative to the evidence, especially considering how bizarrely tribalistic comic-book movie discourse has become for some stupid reason.

Yes, both movies opened at roughly 52–55% of their production budgets domestically, so the numerical comparison is factually accurate. But that alone doesn’t mean they’re on the same trajectory, let alone that Clayface is experiencing its own “Morbius moment.” Sony’s “Spider-Man but not featuring Spider-Man for some dumbass reason” universe was built around Spider-Man-related characters while intentionally leaving Spider-Man himself out of the equation. Outside the Venom films, its entries were met with poor reviews and terrible commercial results. DC Films/Studios has already explored villain-led stories through Joker and The Penguin, and Clayface’s strong critical and audience reception is already a meaningful difference, even if its box-office legs and profitability remain uncertain.

I think this reflects a broader problem with comic-book movie discourse: tribalism encourages people to turn individual results into sweeping verdicts. One side sees a disappointing opening and treats it as confirmation that the DCU is failing; the other sees positive reviews and takes them as proof that the DCU was never in trouble. Bock can make a legitimate point about the opening without his broader claim that the DC brand is in freefall automatically following from it. Likewise, DCU supporters can defend the movie’s potential without pretending the opening was better than it was or that the DCU has been single-handedly saved by one movie. It’s too early to call this a Morbius moment, but it’s equally too early to call Clayface a box-office phenomenon. Nobody seems willing to wait for a clearer picture when it comes to box-office analysis of these movies, unless we’re talking about immediate juggernauts like Brand New Day or bombs like Supergirl. I think that impatience is precisely why so many bold proclamations end up aging so poorly.

I’m not ready to declare the DCU doomed over one film, but I also don’t think it’s earned back all the goodwill it needs. I want to see how the universe develops (IF IT DOES) as it expands into other corners of DC, particularly with projects like Brave and the Bold and Wonder Woman, before making sweeping judgments about its overall direction. Financial performance matters, but so do reception, legs, context, and the broader slate. We need to let the results speak for themselves instead of treating every opening weekend as ammunition in a franchise war, and apply that standard whether we’re rooting for the DCU or waiting for it to fail.

@Kahron0 - Very well said! I agree especially on your critique of modern day comic tribalism which I agree is a silly thing that exist for sure!

I would simply say from my POV calling Clayface Morbius Moment was so dumb because Morbius was a bad movie imo.

I ended up loving Clayface (went in not expecting too).
So Clayface is an actual good film unlike Morbius which was a Jared Leto love fest for his cultist lmfao 😂

@Kahron0 - Exactly. Why is josh encouraging readers to associate Clayface's $43 million global figure with Morbius's $39 million domestic figure? It's as if he's underplaying the importance of reviews. Not to mention, the Jeff Bock statement is an opinion not a conclusion.

Honestly, Wilding isn't wrong to compare Clayface with Morbius. He's entitled to argue whatever he wants. Unfortunately, his framing makes the comparison sound more conclusive than it is. My issue is not with the numbers, it's that the article selects an irritating comparison and gives it more weight than the available evidence warrants.

@Kahron0 - he also listed it as a “news” article when clearly he was just searching the at the bottom of the barrel on an opinion that match his. So clearly “he’s not the only one thinkin it. Smh

“Yes, the DC brand is in trouble.”

After seeing what Gunn did with the GotG movies I thought he’d be great at rebooting the DCU. But so far it isn’t looking great. If Man of Tomorrow isn’t close to a billion at the box office then his DCU may be done.

TheVisionary25 - 10/25/2026, 4:53 PM
@Truebeliever333 - if it’s underperforms then yes the DCU is in trouble but if it does better then Superman then it will be fine…

It doesn’t have to reach a billion because no Superman film has to be a success.
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/25/2026, 5:35 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Yes they do. What a silly thing to say.

Superman (1978) was a massive success and it mattered and got three sequels, only one of which was actually good.

Man of Steel was a big success. If it hadn’t been then Snyder wouldn’t have returned to make BvS with an even bigger budget.

Superman Returns wasn’t a success and that ended that attempt at rebooting the franchise. Beautiful movie though.

TheVisionary25 - 10/25/2026, 8:51 PM
@Truebeliever333 - yes of course it needs to be a success (i miswrote that) but that doesn’t mean it needs to be 1 billion to succeed.

The only person I've seen this movie compared to Morbius is from you..

It's an R Rated Horror movie with a B tier Batman Villian. The movie is great and will pick up steam, not the greatest film but it still kicked ass. The club scene towards the end is fantastic. It's a great start.
