Clayface's Surprising CinemaScore Revealed As DCU Movie Eyes $23+ Million Opening Weekend

Clayface has earned an impressive A- CinemaScore, matching The Batman and Superman. With strong audience scores, can DC Studios' $44 million horror movie become a box office hit?

Only time will tell whether Clayface becomes another huge breakout box office success for the horror genre, but the R-rated DC Studios movie has struck a chord with moviegoers.

Clayface has been awarded an A- CinemaScore, an impressive achievement for both the DC brand and horror movies. In terms of the former, it matches Superman, The Batman, Aquaman, and Man of Steel.

More impressive is that Clayface is one of the only post-COVID horror movies to receive an A-, putting it on par with A Quiet Place 2, Weapons, Five Nights at Freddy's, and even Obsession. In terms of critical reception, this is the win DC Studios needed after the tepid response to Supergirl in June.

James Gunn took to Threads for a victory lap, writing, "Really proud of this. Sinners is the only horror movie to have EVER gotten an A Cinemascore, and only three horror movies have gotten an A- in the last couple years -- Obsession, Weapons, and, now, Clayface. As always, all praise goes to James, Mike, Hossein, Tom, Naomi and the whole gang."

With 76% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a glowing 94% audience score, things look good for Clayface on that front. In terms of box office, Deadline reports that after a $9.5 million Friday (including $3.5 million from previews), it's now eyeing a $23 million to $25 million opening weekend in North America.

This is a weak result for the DC brand, but a solid performance for a horror movie. In fact, it's in the same ballpark as Smile and Black Phone 2, which went on to earn $355.5 million and $132.2 million, respectively. Needless to say, numbers like that would be a huge win for a title that only cost $44 million to produce.

While Clayface should open at #1, You Can See Everything is nipping at its heels with an estimated $19+ million second weekend. Laika's Wildwood, meanwhile, is in third place with an expected $11 million haul. Street Fighter, however, has slipped down the charts for a $9.5 million second frame.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

@dragon316 - i am thats why didnt want to spend money on it. The trailers look generic and I dont trust the critics when it comes to the DCU.

However, if the audience are giving it a similar rating to movies I do like, I'm more inclined to check it out.

Wildwood is a bonafide masterpiece. I actually can't believe how good it was.

Clayface is just one of the better villain movies and compared to recent DC fare it stands out a little. But it is pretty [frick]ing disposable. Wildwood is peak cinema.

ClayFACE?! [frick] that. ClayMATION!

@UltronIO - Oh Idk dude, there are some scenes in Clayface that in my opinion will be considered classic one day...

I managed to obtain a totally legit copy yesterday. its not a bad film (im saying this as a non dc fanboy) but what lets it down is that is a literal scene for scene remake of darkman, it borrows so heavily from that movie. and the final form reveal was pretty bad, otherwise its not great but not bad just ok

@HumanRubiksCube - all movies take ideas from other movies but avatar makes it that obvious

@HumanRubiksCube - I loved the final form scene thought it was epic! But all good bro! I've never seen Darkman but imo it took elements from The Fly, Nosferatu (Kaul Kinski' version) and mixed the worlds of Penguin and Gotham TV series so I fell in love with Clayface despite being super cynical before reseeding it.

I'll give the DCU credit where credit is due. This is genuinely impressive. Maybe it'll have legs after all.

@FireGunn - I was skeptical to after not liking Supergirl and Lanterns but Clayface has to be one of my favorite movies this year. Tom Rhys deserves nothing but praise

@FireGunn - See? You can have criticism for a movie or even cinematic universe and give credit where credit is due. Same with enjoying a movie/cinematic universe while also calling out a failure. Wish more people here got that concept

Despite everything this site did to try to bring it down (up to the "surprising" bit in this post...), the movie seems to have a decent quality! Makes you wonder about the impartiality of this site's views..

@CristianE - The movie has excellent 👌 quality, I wouldn't consider it horror I feel like it's more of an action pulp thriller which to the contrary from what everyone was saying before it released makes it feel more like a comic origin story...

If it brings in 45 million worldwide this weekend it'll be a hit for DC Studios.

Honestly I'm starting to see many people talk about this movie not just online but from people around town. I'm catching this movie on Tuesday so I'm excited! It doesn't matter that it doesn't have any easter eggs or references to the larger universe or even Batman.

Let it stand on its own and tell it's story that's all we need.

Nolanite out

I hope this shows people that while their opinion is valid to their own experience, they likely shouldn't convince themselves that their opinion is everyone else's.

Like a film, or don't like a film; just don't act like your love or hate for something is the end all be all. When people attempt to convince everyone else that their artistic tastes are a fact they've forgotten that art is subjective.

I say this objectively, and not as a dig to any specific person.

@RedFury - I never let anyone’s opinions critics or general audience influence my decision. I have to see it for myself before I make judgment. It’s the only way to make sure. Never judge a book by its cover and don’t knock it before you try it. If clayface received one star reviews or 1% on RR I’d still watch it because I’m curious about the character in general.

Meanwhile, Wilding over here doubling down on this being DC's, "Morbius Moment," and blocking me for calling him on it. It makes me happy seeing the last shred of his credibility get torched after he lashed out like a toddler for rightly getting called on an absolute trash take.
Polarpenguin
Polarpenguin - 10/24/2026, 8:18 AM
@Juicebox316 - 100%. Sad “critics” like him are so desperate for attention and to feel like they matter, that they’ll totally abandon standards and logic and embarrass themselves like this.

It’s obvious @JoshWilding was just hoping to get clicks and attention for writing a scathing review, and to be the foes rot do it.

His ultimate mistake was assuming the hyper-online neckbeards who have a hate boner for Gunn translates to the real world. And it does not.
