Clayface held its world premiere last night, and the first reactions have been mostly very positive. The full reviews may tell a slightly different story, but we have been hearing good things about the first DCU horror movie since those early test screenings.
Spoilers have yet to find their way online, but it probably won't surprise anyone to learn that Matt Hagen survives to wreak havoc another day!
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was asked about future plans for the shape-shifting villain while speaking to Cinemex on the red carpet.
"I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points," Gunn said. "And yeah, this isn't the last we'll see of Clayface. And I can't wait for you guys to see what we do with him."
Of course, we have seen Hagen before, as it's already been confirmed that this version of Clayface is the one that was introduced in the animated Creature Commandos series.
Whether Hagen's eventual DCU return will see him face off against Batman remains to be seen, but we'd be very surprised if an encounter with the Dark Knight didn't factor into Gunn's plans for the villain.
DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.
The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.
Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.
