"Poopface?" — Clayface's "Terrifying" Final Form Draws Mixed Reviews After Leaking In HD

Clayface's leaked transformation scene has sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with some fans calling the design terrifying and others labelling DC Studios' new anti-hero as "Poopface."

Clayface has already opened in many countries, despite the review embargo not lifting until this afternoon at 3 pm PT. Since last week's influencer reactions, the tide has turned on social media, and all eyes are now on what the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score will be.

As is often the case following international screenings, clips and photos from Clayface are being shared across platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok.

That includes an HD look at the movie's final scene featuring Matt Hagen's transformation into the comic book version of Clayface. However, in the now-deleted TikTok video—a screenshot of which can be found on X—it's clear the design is not fully comic-accurate and attempts to incorporate Tom Rhys Harries' face to make his monstrous form as twisted as possible.

The reaction on social media has been mixed. While some have said Clayface looks "terrifying," others have labelled the Creature Commandos villain "Poopface." It's admittedly not the most mature response, but it also probably isn't the type of reaction DC Studios was going for.

When it comes to comic book fans, they appear similarly unsure of what to think about Clayface's transition from page to screen.

An even bigger talking point on social media has actually been the scene that precedes this one. That features a scene with Clayface that's reminiscent of Senator Kelly's transformation into a puddle of water in 2000's X-Men. Warner Bros. has been so heavy-handed in taking down those leaked clips, it's started removing GIFs of Kelly (the two sequences look almost identical).

We're still waiting on news about Clayface's potential opening weekend, with tracking expected to be updated when the review embargo lifts. The buzz may be negative now, but when critics chime in, it will be fascinating to see where the movie lands.

In our review, we concluded, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

we gonna pretend now that clayface as a character hasn't always looked like literal shit?

Long embargos are almost always a bad sign, right?

If they thought the word of mouth would increase ticket sales, they'd get the word out as soon as possible.

@SeeYouIn2036 - DC did this with Wonder Woman 1984, The Flash, Supergirl and now Clayface. Make the social media reactions as early as possible so they can amplify the shills desperate to lick their boots for more access and suppress the bad reviews as much as possible.

I think Clayface's score will end up in the low 60s though since there's no way it can be worse than Supergirl.

@SeeYouIn2036 - Yep; the studio is basically telling the audience that they know their movie is shit. This will be the second critical and likely financial flop in a row for the DCU, and in a franchise that only has three movies, that's a really bad track record.

I have absolutely zero interest in this - it apparently has no connection to Batman except a GCPD sign or something. When will studios learn to stop making solo movies for villains no one cares about? Venom is the exception, not the norm

Also DC Studios Showcase podcast host Coy Jandreau telling fans to "choke on their own tongues" is only gonna drive people further away from anything James Gunn produces.

Apart from Reeves' The Batman Part II, my wallet closed.

@DoomGame - I still can’t figure out how SONY missed on a massive Holland Spider-Man/Hardy Venom crossover movie arc. Shit, they could’ve adapted Maximum Carnage with all the pieces they have. It was a can’t miss bunny lay-up and they still missed.

@TheExile117 - Those movies only exist to retain the rights I swear. Sony was making some absolute bullshit.

I think it will happen eventually either in Secret Wars or shortly after when Spidey gets the symbiote suit. I hope Hardy returns

The heck? That looks pretty much like the BTAS. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. It's half his face and half the full on Clayface. I haven't seen the movie yet but how is that any different from when Venom has half his face showing Brock?

@BoW - While I don’t disagree with you on the Clayface pic here. I’ll just say this… .not everything may translate well from comics/animation/videogame to live action. Even with the advancement in practical/CGI effects of today, sometimes things just don’t look right in live action. Take Street Fighter for example. The costumes and actors/actresses look spot on, but at the same time they also look like the director went to a local Con and pull some people off the floor and put them in the movie. But yeah, this def does look like BTAS.

@BoW - if you cover the left side of the face, the right side looks almost exactly like BTAS' version. It looks decent.

I mean , that looks like Clayface to me…

Obviously they still have some of Tom Rhys Harries face in there for the sake of getting his performance across but I feel it’s about as close as you could get imo to the character in live action!!.
