UPDATE: Clayface: Disgusting Extended Clip Explains The DCU Horror Movie's 18 Rating

An extended version of a recent clip from Clayface has been released, and this scene clearly explains why the movie was hit with an 18 rating in the UK...

UPDATE: It seems Clayface was brought in with a significantly smaller budget than previous reports claimed and is now on track for a stronger opening weekend at the box office.

According to THR, the movie's production budget is actually $30 million, not $40M, and the latest box office estimates point to a $44 million global debut.

The gruesome horror movie's R rating will prevent it from reaching as wide a demographic as the previous DCU releases, but we've seen how well R-rated comic book movies (Joker, for example) can do when they find an audience.

Original article follows.

DC Studios has released an extended version of a recent Clayface clip, and the wince-inducing scene explains why the first DCU horror movie landed an 18 rating in the UK.

A film with an R rating in the US will usually get away with a 15 in Ireland and the United Kingdom, but an 18 is basically the equivalent of North America's much stricter NC-17.

The scene finds Matt Hagen starting to panic when his face begins to transform mid-flight. When his eyes close over, he makes his way to the lavatory and prepares to cut his eyelids open with a pair of scissors.

This time, we get to see Hagen attempt to force his eyes open by pulling at his now malleable face, before a close-up shows the scissors go in.

We also have a brief interview with James Gunn, who was asked about the possibility of Clayface crossing paths with Robert Pattinson's Batman: "Probably not... not in the near future, that's for sure."

Gunn has confirmed that we will see the shape-shifting villain in the DCU again, however.

"I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points," Gunn said. "And yeah, this isn't the last we'll see of Clayface. And I can't wait for you guys to see what we do with him."

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

This will be a decent film that'll flop massively.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Even if it was some kind of Eggers vibewonk masterpiece or Obsession style self contained gem, it was a stupid [frick]ing idea by a stupid [frick]ing team at a stupid [frick]ing company that never did a goddamn thing but hire Christopher Nolan OVER TWENTY [frick]ING YEARS AGO.

@Batmangina - Completely disagreed. THIS is how the genre survives. Not by remaking the same movie 10000x ad infinitum. Not saying "Oooh our new superhero movie is actually a spy thriller with superheroes in it" but just making the same action/comedy film you normally make and having spy thriller aesthetics plus one actor from a famous spy movie.

It's actually making films of different genres and allowing them to exist in the same universe. What makes superheroes such a great story-telling device is that they're so versatile. And these are all based on comics, and comics themselves are never just ONE thing, but an entire medium of art.

You should be able to make a comic book movie that's primarily a horror movie, or primarily a romantic comedy, etc. There should be no limits here

@IronSpider101 - I would agree with you 100000% if Gunn had actually created a universe FIRST.

This is a [frick]ing Batman villain movie without Batman.

That worked ONCE. The second one shit itself mightily.

The idea that the DCU has a Batman villain movie BEFORE having a [frick]ing Batman is straight up retarded.

But "Oooh our new superhero movie is actually a spy thriller with superheroes in it" acutally worked like a mother[frick]er because people gave a shit about Cap and Iron Man BIG TIME and they had verisimilitude across the board.

Please be good... please... I don't get why people glaze Marvels mediocrity while punching down on DC for trying a vastly different approach. Normies gonna norm I guess
Loohnutick
Loohnutick - 10/16/2026, 2:27 PM
@bobevanz - Because Marvel is 6 phases deep into their cinematic universe and they got cocky and got experimental after Endgame, which is where all the flops and mediocrity came in.

You CANNOT and SHOULD NOT launch a universe doing this experimental phase, which doesn't even feel like a phase, it's just how Gunn rolls. The sooner you and others keep defending this pathetic failure of a universe, the more Gunn will keep going with that approach.

And no, this will not be good. This the DCU's Morbius.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 10/16/2026, 4:11 PM
@bobevanz - You're answering your own question - begging a [frick]ing movie that should have never been made to be good.

It's not a 'vastly different' approach - it's [frick]ing clueless meandering and it sucks.

MCU peaked at Infinity War and they've shit the bed almost every time out since then.
DCU never even started and has stepped on its dick since day one.

Two things can be true at once.
IronSpider101
IronSpider101 - 10/16/2026, 4:21 PM
@Loohnutick - Marvel never got cocky or experimental. They stayed making the same bullshit they always made. The only difference was they killed off every character people liked and now there was no ongoing story to make people forgive the crappier movies when they came out. They also never let the stories go small again until Spider-Man Brand New Day (and even that is set up around having like 4 different franchises guest star in it).

@Loohnutick - "And no, this will not be good. This the DCU's Morbius."

I don't like this film, but this is a delusional statement. From the trailer and this clip alone, it looks 100x more interesting than anything in the Sony villain universe. Not to mention that it has a pretty good director.

@FireGunn - *I don't like this universe
Loohnutick
Loohnutick - 10/16/2026, 5:22 PM
@IronSpider101 - Way I see it, after Endgame, Feige brought in directors and let them do whatever the [frick] they wanted with the IP, characters, etc. Which is cool and all, but when you're managing a universe you DO need that oversight. Even Feige admits to being spread too thin. I see similar mistakes for the DCU. Almost no direction besides Superman, who's directed solely by Gunn.
Loohnutick
Loohnutick - 10/16/2026, 5:24 PM
@FireGunn - Morbius numbers. Which isnt so smart when you're LAUNCHING a universe. Phase 4-6 was shit but Marvel at least gave us the Infinity Saga.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/16/2026, 5:28 PM
@Loohnutick - Oh you're talking about numbers. To be fair, Morbius had like 2x the budget of this but yeah this was a horrible idea to launch a universe with. I see this making around 90 million dollars
