Damon Lindelof Compares BREAKING BAD's Walter White To BATMAN

The Prometheus scribe has written a very interesting piece for Vulture, comparing White's transformation into a criminal to that of Bruce Wayne's into Batman..except he argues that just like with The Dark Knight, deep down Walter was ALWAYS Heisenberg!

We don't cover AMC's excellent Breaking Bad here on CBM -- for obvious reasons! -- but the show still has quite a few fans round these parts, so now that the show is nearing its final episode and Damon Lindelof has penned an article comparing Walter White to the Caped Crusader, we thought it'd make an interesting read for many of you. The former Lost writer reckons that "Heisenberg" (the criminal alias of White) was always present in the man, and that his cancer was simply the catalyst to awaken him -- just as Bruce Wayne's parent's murder unleashed the Batman.

"The conventional thinking is that Bruce Wayne became Batman on the day that his parents were murdered. This is his origin story. We all know it. We all accept it. We all love it. Because it makes sense. Your parents are gunned down in front of you, so of course you vow an unending vendetta against crime and then dress up like a winged mammal to exact it.

Except that’s not how Bruce Wayne became Batman.

Bruce Wayne was already Batman.

Because millions upon millions of people are murdered by criminals all the time — especially in comic books. But the sons and daughters of those people do not become Batman. But Bruce Wayne?

Bruce was different. There was something inside him. Lying dormant. He just needed something powerful enough to awaken it."

Lindelof continues to explain that in his estimation, Walt's cancer revelation was Heisenberg's "origin story", as it becomes the rationale for every horrible thing the character does after that. BUT, when the cancer goes away he doesn't stop, anymore than Wayne would stop being Batman if his parents miraculously reappeared.

"This is the equivalent of Bruce Wayne’s parents suddenly reappearing to him and saying, “We had to fake our deaths when you were a kid and we’ve been in witness protection all this time, and we’re so sorry, but the guy who shot us was actually an FBI agent helping us and he wasn’t even a criminal and we love you, so can we have our pearls back and NOW YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE BATMAN ANYMORE!!!”

But would Bruce stop being Batman?

No. He would not. Because he is Batman. And once the catalyst has … well, catalyzed? There is no going back."

Actually Dark Knight Returns Batman is very similar to The Last Season's Walter White..I even say with a couple changes Byran would make a good DKR Batman..

The end of two TV eras in one week...

Dexter finale was fargin Awesome!!! A wonderfully Dexter-ish way to end what has been my favorite TV show for 8 years.

Breaking Bad has been incredible from beginning to end. The transformation of Walter over the course of the show has been beautifully written and portrayed even better. Hats off to Bryan Cranston for showing what someone can do when they fully emerse themselves in a role that he has.

Wait, Batman AND Heisenberg in the same article?

DAMNIT THIS DESERVES ARTICLE OF THE YEAR!!!!

Okay, I'm done.

And Beto, Season 5 is awesome. I have no earthly idea why anyone would think it would suck, its the best season.

And Felina, NEXT WEEK WHY DOES IT HAVE TO END DAMNIT! NOOOOOO! But I hope it is as good as Granite State and Ozymandias, those were amazing. BUT ITS ENDING!!

Well, its been an amazing ride, and all we can do is.... respect the chemistry.

These days in the story of Batman I wouldn't say Bruce Wayne was always Batman. Bruce Wayne died the night his parents died and he became Batman. Comparing Batman to other heroes is impossible because unlike Batman most superheroes are the mask they put on. Bruce Wayne is the mask Batman puts on during the day.

@Beto

I loved it. They twisted and turned everything so much, it was genius. But I am one of the few people that never saw a dropoff in quality after Season 4. I have loved each and every episode of Dexter from the first time he said "Tonight's the Night".

My all-time favorite TV show. And I want to do dirty, dirty things to Jennifer Carpenter.

Not trying to start an argument, but I think those of us who see Batman this way are the ones who were dissatisfied with Bruce's happily ever after in TDKR.

I'd say the Dexter season finale was adequate and fitting. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either.

@Brainiac3000 Season two is just as good, but in a different way. Season three has some bad patches, but stick with it. Season four is absolutely brilliant.

But stop there. Whatever you do, stop there, because starting with season five's second episode it plummets straight down.

As for Bruce always being Batman, I think that's a little silly. A dormant sense of justice, perhaps, but if his parents had never been gunned down then he would never have sought justice through the means that he does. He'd probably have simply grown up to be a philanthropist in his father's image.

Well yeah, he was always Heisenberg. I didn't think that was a mystery.

You don't suddenly go from loving father to hardened callous criminal who would poison a child if that wasn't already in you.

Can anyone explain why people bash the last 4 seasons of Dexter? I loved it all. It all felt like very natural progressions throughout. Nothing, to me, felt forced, or stuffed in for cheap thrills. And I thought the Vogel character in Season 8 was beautifully crafted, and sympathetic.
