Marion Cotillard Responds To Backlash Over Her Death Scene In Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Talia al Ghul's death scene towards the end of The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most maligned moments in CBM history, but actress Marion Cotillard thinks people tend to make a bit too much of it...

The final instalment in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, has been out for years at this stage, but the scene in which Marion Cotillard's Talia al Ghul succumbs to her injuries following a devastating crash is still something fans regularly bring up as a source of ridicule.

Though the actress had been great in the role up to that point, there's no denying that Talia's death could have been depicted a little less... awkwardly.

So what went wrong?

In a new interview (translated from French site Allocine), Cotillard speaks for the first time about this, and although she believes people overreacted, she does also seem to suggest that perhaps Nolan should have used a different take!

“We’re all in the same boat, and if sometimes it gets out of control, then everyone is involved. Sometimes there are failures, and when you see this on screen, you’re thinking: ‘Why? Why did they keep that take?’ But either you blame everyone or nobody. But I thought people overreacted, because it was tough to be identified just with this scene. When I’m doing the best I can to find the authenticity in every character that I’m playing, it’s tough to be known just for this scene.”

Tell us, have you watched The Dark Knight Rises recently? Does this scene still jar? Sound off below.

I went to the Dark Knight Marathon for the Dark Knight Rises. Packed Auditorium. When she died, half of my theater burst out laughing (myself included).

@RorMachine - "Tell us, have you watched The Dark Knight Rises recently?"

To cope with the DCEU.

@Invictor - I feel the same way...I just saw Batman V Superman on cable and all I could do was shake my head and ask "what happened?" From the brilliance of the TDK Trilogy to some of the worse CBM in recent memory.

I hear you, Marion. But maybe you should leave out the "authenticity" bit and just say it's embarrassing they used a shit take.

Yeah, that's really on Nolan. But, c'est la vie.

@Dunejedi - Or maybe the first suggestion that WB has some problems in the editing room? It's probably too much to draw a direct line from a bad death scene to the chainsaw that someone took to the the last two DCEU movies, but...

@Spock0Clock - I envision Sean Young flitting around the studio a lá Phantom of the Opera, chopping up sound editing, stealing memos, rearranging the Kraft services table. . All the while dressed as Catwoman. Just because it's crazy, doesn't mean it's not true.

I have never understood what the big deal was. I think it is a testament to brilliance of the Dark Knight Trilogy in that people have to dig DEEP in order to find "something wrong" I have seen stupid moments in almost every comic book film which are far worse than anything Marion Cotillard did which people routinely ignore all the time.

@Forthas - That whole movie was stupid.
