Nolan apparently wanted actor Wes Bentley to play Batman:

Nolan recommends Bentley for Batman

Christopher Nolan recommends Wes Bentley for new Batman

And he had good reason. Bentley has more of that "inner turmoil, repressed rage behind the smile" intensity that Bruce Wayne is supposed to have.

The debate on Bafleck goes back and forth, but a few pictures speak a thousands words.

This looks like Wayne/Batman (image sources: IMDB):

Intense, no?

This is the "smiling on the outside, angry on the inside, I'll keep up appearances, but this is a waste of my time, and I'd rather be beating thugs into a pulp" look...

This looks like the "prematurely old soul" look of Wayne/Batman

Darnit, this is Batman!

Bentley even looks more Batman than Bale here:

But Affleck?

This man's just too happy, doesn't immediately convey that feeling of raw, keen, focused, goal-oriented intelligence... and you just can't fake inner turmoil -- not the kind Bentley has had.

Affleck has become a great director and has shown great depth as far back as "Good Will Hunting", but he's not Wayne and he's not Batman. Not in the way Bentley and a number of other actors could have been.

Nolan knows what he's talking about - and Warner Brothers should have listened.

I fear this decision might be Advantage Marvel, big-time. Here's hoping Affleck will rise to new heights.

He does.......but....its not going to happen now. Everyone needs to accept the casting choice.

Ben will do a good job.......I remember how I hated Heath being cast as Joker. I don't judge anymore.

I'm sure Ben tried the Bat suit for Zack and WB execs......hell Ben probably wanted to try it on.

Good choice IMO.

this article will be deleted in 3, 2, 1 ...

Seriously now: (I'm gonna repeat myself)

There is now way Nolan would recommended Wes for this movie because he never worked with him (maybe, just maybe he participated in Interstellar screen tests, or saw American Beauty). He just started to work on Interstellar in Canada. I'm not even sure Bentley started to shoot his Interstellar scenes. I'm not even sure Bentley was screen testing for Batman. Ben Affleck was probably WB first and last choice.

I wonder what Bentley would look like under the cowl. He has some great piercing eyes that would fit Batman.

You can click the news article links for the source on Nolan's comments. Most of the photos are from IMDB.

I'm only a "Nolan" fan to the extent that he succeeded in bringing the most faithful depiction of the Dark Knight (since Burton's first Batman) to the big screen (but Dark Knight Rises was a somewhat incoherent, mixed bag).

My guess : WB (and Snyder) didn't want to go with such actors like Armitage becasue they were afraid his Batman would resemblance Bale's Batman too much. So they went quite opposite.

I think it's a wash between Michael Keaton's and Christian Bale's Batman, but Keaton's depiction of Wayne was excellent, especially given the history the time - remember, Burton's Batman was one of the first times superhero characters were being taken seriously by Hollywood.

It was a very big deal that help beat the path to more serious comic book movies, such as X-Men, etc. Burton/Keaton were pioneers.

@Jedi

because of the "mutated Joker ending" ?

@JediPhilosopher, haunts me as well. There's also some great DC animation that plumbs depths of drama and great action sequences that the live action DC universe has yet to touch - though Nolan and Snyder have opened the door to it.

NOLAN lost it after DK RISES, what a terrible movie (Mainly to all the DC characters 10 minutes to the end that all good a Hollywood awful ass kicking). I still love BEGINS and TDK tho!

But yeah BENTLEY would be an awesome choice, as for AFFLECK =

BEN as BATS thought it was a joke, still do, cover up for the real casting...

WB done it before!

But then again its HOLLYWOOD, there could be worst for the role and I don't mean he's a bad actor, just not right (MAINLY) for the Bruce Wayne part... anyone can play Batman under the mask if their an actor and look half the part.

DAMON FOR ROBIN!

(Jk) :p

Really, trying to establish a petition or organize a movement to deny an actor a role with no professional grounds... it doesn't make you a fan.
It makes you an asshole.
Lhornbk
Lhornbk - 8/25/2013, 9:08 AM
@GerMan, really, you're the idiot who made that petition? Let me explain some things to you, you stupid moron (I usually try to avoid name-calling, but if anyone deserves it you do.) First, contrary to what Obama wants, we are still a constitutional republic, and under our constitution Congress makes laws, not the president. Second, I am 99% sure that if Congress did attempt to pass a law that prevented one particular person from being offered and/or accepting a job, the Supreme Court would declare it unconstitutional. How would you like it if they passed a law saying that you, and only you, could not be employed at your current job (assuming you have a job, that is.) Third, only idiots and extreme left-wing radicals want the government involved in this kind of trivial nonsense. Unless you want a totalitarian government that controls every little aspect of every single person's life, including where they live and what job they get to have (ask some people who lived in the Soviet Union back in the 40s, 50s, 60s about how great it is to have the government decide whether or not you get to go to college, and limits the jobs you're allowed to do.) Finally, Affleck will be fine as Batman, so get over it, get a life, and shut up about it already.

Ben Batman Now so get over it get a life already. There more important things in life then who playing Batman Now.

As for the main point of this article, first, I'm not entirely sure I believe it, and even if it is true, it does sound like what someone else suggested, just a fan-cast, just him saying that he could see this guy as Batman, not him actually telling Snyder and WB to hire this guy. Second, after seeing him in Hunger Games, I cannot even remotely see Bentley as Batman. Finally, Nolan is done with Batman. He didn't want his Batman to be part of a DC universe, and he made TDKR end in such a way that it's basically impossible for that Batman to be in the combined DC universe. So as far as I'm concerned, his opinion about who should be Batman means exactly nothing.
