Paul Dini Discusses His Defunct BATMAN BEYOND & Ra's Al Ghul Live-Action Films

A little over a decade ago, writers Paul Dini ("Batman: The Brave and the Bold") and Alan Burnett ("Green Lantern: First Flight") were hired by Warner Bros. to write a screenplay for a live-action film adaptation of the popular animated series, Batman Beyond. Warner Bros. even hired the Remember the Titans director, Boaz Yakin, to co-write and direct. A year later, WB would put the project on hold, going in a different direction. Dini discusses that project with Kevin Smith, and his pitch for a Ra's al Ghul-oriented Batman film that was never made.

Terry McGinnis was just an ordinary teenager.... until his father was mysteriously murdered. Suspecting foul play at his father's company Wayne/Powers Corporation, Terry meets Bruce Wayne and learns a secret identity hidden for decades. Now too old to battle injustice, Wayne refuses to help. So Terry does what any brash young kid would do: steal the Batsuit and take matters into his own hands! Vowing to avenge his father's death, Terry dons the high-tech suit tricked out with jetpacks, a supersensitive microphone and even camouflage capabilities in search of his father's assassin. Get in on the action from the beginning of a new partnership between an ex-crimefighter and his apprentice.

I liked the cartoon just not a fan of it being in any other medium. It's a Elseworld story to me it's not cannon. And would rather see money spent on a regular Batman movie or one of DCs other superheros then this.

Why weren't their ideas for a Live action Bruce Wayne batman incorporated into the films?

Actually Batman Beyond reminded me a lot of Phantom 2040 which came out a few years before Batman Beyond. BB kind of felt like a rip off of that series.

Kevin Smith/Paul Dini should do the Justice League flick, not Snyder/Goyer.

I would have liked to have seen his take on the Batman mythology. I wish WB would even let him help Goyer with the DC Universe. Even better would have been if Greg Weisman & Bruce Timm were involved too. This way more ideas could be thrown around. So this way WB could put out better films.

Kevin Smith is fine when he writes his own kind of material. Most of his stuff is way too self referential though, and it ends up coming off as fairly pretentious, even in the face of the absurdity of most of it. Look no further than his Superman script (which was pretty bad), or his horrible Batman arc called The Widening Gyre.

I enjoy Smiths podcasts. I love listening to Fatman on Batman. He's a true blue fan of comic books and comic book movies, but anyone who thinks he should get within 100 miles of a comic book movie script is out of their minds.

@JoeMomma29 LOL Yeah that movie was bad could have been so much better. Phantom 2040 was a pretty awesome series though. Also I don't know if you have ever read the Phantom Comic strips or Comic books but he is a pretty awesome character in general.

The one thing i HATE about Batman Beyond is that it's so heavily rooted in the Animated Series continuity. They ruined Batgirl and screwed over Dick Grayson plus almost the entire roster of the "future" Justice League.

@JoeMomma29 LOL Don't tell anyone it is for me too. But had always wished that half the movie took place in the 30's and the other half in modern day with two different Phantoms. How cool would that have been?
