The Batman 2 Star Robert Pattinson On "Incredibly Generous" Steven Soderbergh Stepping In To Finish Sequel

Production has now resumed on The Batman - Part II, with Steven Soderbergh stepping behind the camera to finish principal photography after writer-director Matt Reeves was forced to leave the set to deal with an ongoing family matter.

"Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II," Reeves clarified on social media after the news broke. "I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes."

Now, star Robert Pattinson has shared his thoughts on Soderbergh stepping in to help finish the film.

"I am so happy he's come on to help Matt," the Primetime star tells GamesRadar. "It's incredibly generous of him – and he's doing it in the loveliest way. It's completely selfless."

"I think Matt had put so much work into the script, and we're almost done," Pattinson continued. "So for someone to come in and say, 'I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.' And to have someone who's as talented as Steven doing it is great."

Pattinson also confirmed that cameras are rolling again. "I think they're in production already. And I'm starting in a couple of days."

DC Studios previously revealed that Soderbergh was the one who approached Reeves with the offer of help. Reeves is believed to have completed around two-thirds of the film, so the Ocean's Eleven director does still have a bit of work ahead of him.

Recent set videos showed Pattinson's Bruce Wayne making his way through a crowd of angry protestors as he leaves a Gotham City courthouse. Some of the signs being held said: “Court of Fowls, I'm coming for you next, Your Greed is Killing Us, Oligarchs gotta go, The richer get richer, Eat the rich, One day the poor will have nothing," and "Re$i$t.”

The Waynes have always represented the elite in Gotham City, but the family was generally well-regarded by the working class. We're not sure exactly what Bruce did to change this, but it seems clear that he is no longer a very popular figure.

Could the actions of The Court of Owls or Anarky be behind this negative perception of Billionaire Bruce? (more here).

When Sebastian Stan's casting was announced, the trades indicated that he would play Harvey Dent/Two-Face, but this was never confirmed, and rumors later circulated that he'd actually been cast as deranged serial killer Victor Zsasz.

As for Scarlett Johansson, there are rumors that she will play a version of Poison Ivy. A blonde woman many believe to be the actress' stunt double was recently spotted riding shotgun in the Batmobile. The same woman was then seen standing with a mysterious child as Wayne was being resuscitated by Alfred.

Earlier this year, Reeves officially announced the movie's main cast on social media.

The filmmaker confirmed that Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb/The Penguin), Jayme Lawson (Bella Réal) and Gil Perez-Abraham (Officer Martinez) will reprise their roles, alongside new cast members Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry.

Reeves did not reveal the characters Gotham City's new additions will play.

After several previous delays, The Batman - Part II was scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2027, but was recently pushed back to February 18, 2028.

I have a sneaking suspicion this film ends up less beloved than the first one. Obviously I hope I am extremely wrong on that.

@McMurdo - You are absolutely correct. This is gonna be one of those Synder Cut/Joshtice League situations or Superman 2 Donner cut. Ironically it’s the same studio behind those movies and this one. Warner Bros lost their dignity as a studio a long time ago and any shred of competence is a slowly fading away.

@McMurdo @UceOmega - My hope here is that filming finishes, Reeves edits from LA with the footage shot, and by the time reshoots roll around, the family issue will have calmed down a bit and Matt can return to film anything else needed to complete it properly. I'm not worried yet.

Lol - and why don't you tell us what you think it is?

@McMurdo @UceOmega - I think the two situations are only superficially similar. There is no indication that Matt Reeves is being pushed out, Setterberg contacted Reeves and asked him about this, they are staying in touch and Reeves is coming back to do the editing. I think, considering the circumstances that this solution is going to be a win-win. Hopefully, I won’t be eating my words because I want this to be good, not because of my ego.

@McMurdo - I understand why you think that but let’s give a little grace. It’s clear that he’s been going through family and/or friends going through a difficult situation. I’m going to believe in this film :) I hope others do as well :)

@RolandD - There was also no indication that Snyder had been pushed out and he endorsed Joss at comic-con. The studio said that Zack chose Joss and Joss was working to complete Zack's vision the way he would have wanted it, not to make Joss Whedon's Justice League.

This was all bullshit. Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen.

@UceOmega - Why wouldn't I believe it? Whatever is happening with Matt's family has been an ongoing issue. And I doubt they'd just say it's something with his family unless it was real. Otherwise they'd say something more general without bringing the man's family into it. I don't believe they are pushing Matt out for a second, when his recent Penguin show won awards and did really well.

@UltronIO

Why would the studio fire Matt Reeves when they waited for him for **checks notes** four years to turn in a script? Snyder’s movie was basically done when they brought in Joss Whedon. The studio used his tragedy to bring in Joss Whedon for reshoots.

Soderbergh is working hand in hand with Reeves to finish his movie until Reeves takes over in post. Once Snyder left, he wasn’t involved at all introduction.

I don’t understand how you can’t see the difference in each scenario. Unless you really are this thick headed which I’m starting to believe you are, lmao.

@cincymovieguy - Reeves editing the film is a possible future that has yet to happen and might never happen. Who's to say this family issue that has been going on for years will not continue to go on throughout the editing process and that Soderbergh will not helpfully oversee editing as if he were Matt Reeves.

I'll bet Soderbergh can do a mean rendition of Harry Styles' Sign of the Times too, but if I'm buying a ticket to a Harry Styles concert I wanna see Harry Styles sing it, not Soderbergh.

Unless Matt Reeves is literally video-phoning on some kind of robot with a tv screen for a face all throughout shooting then it's not him directing. And if that is what's happening then there's no need to bring in an accomplished director and known filmmaking mimic like Soderbergh.

He's finishing Reeves vision - his script, and his storyboards you stupid [frick]. He's not going to be on set but he's going to bring the movie to the finish line as best as he can given the circumstances. Something Zack Snyder was never given the opportunity to do until years after the movie came out. Snyder also very publicly disowned the movie, something Reeves is very much not doing.

Solaris is underrated. But Soderbergh has a very cool and underappreciated filmography on the whole.

@IAmAHoot - Out of sight is one of my favourite films I’ll even go as far as to say it’s underrated. The oceans trilogy is stylistic and entertaining as [frick].

@UceOmega - Ocean's Thirteen is actually my favorite (Eleven is the best of the three); I could put it on anytime to watch or have on in the background.
Even Magic Mike got overlooked by many because they thought it was just a Channing Tatum stripper movie; but it's actually a very good drama (with some properly impressive dancing regardless; Tatum became a star for a reason).

Lucasberg - 10/26/2026, 1:42 PM
@IAmAHoot - I really do appreciate Soderbergh but Solaris is kind of a bad example because that movie is a remake of the original made by Tarkovsky who is considered one of the towering giants of cinema.

Lucasberg

@IAmAHoot - I think that’s why it was kind of forgotten. It’s like Let the Right One In and Let Me In. The remake was competent but original gets top press.

You prefer Soderbergh’s to Tarkovsky’s?

I liked the detective aspect and more noir asthetic of the first but overall I thought it was very overrated and had more problems then it gets credit for. Aside from a ploddingly slow pace, boring and lifeless emo Bruce, it suffered from a plot that does not hold up under any hint of scrutiny yet somehow thinks its cleaver. It was style over substance but there was potential there to do better. This one sounds like it’s leaning into the Left’s new class warfare obsession with the oligarchs and court and making benevolent Thomas Wayne a “white billionaire villain”. It will de well no matter what (it’s a Batman movie after all) but how well will depend on the execution, story, and how committed WB is to “the message”
UceOmega
UceOmega - 10/26/2026, 12:53 PM
@Bucky74 - Yeah I have to agree. For me the pacing drags especially in the third act. Too many subplots and supporting acts (Penguin) steal the limelight from Batman. The Riddler didn’t do anything for me. In fact it makes Jim Carrey’s flamboyant iteration all the more legendary. This version was a complete gimp akin to the gimp we saw in Pulp Fiction. The studio essentially remixed the best troupes of the Dark Knight and called it the Batman.

Batman gliding off a rooftop? Check. Batman failing to save someone who blows up? Check. Batman having a tense conversation with the villain in a cell? Check. Batman fighting goons in a nightclub? Check. Batman destroying a lorry during a chase sequence? Check. The Batman feels overly familiar and less original. A well crafted superhero film but definitely not the best Batman film.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 10/26/2026, 1:47 PM
@Bucky74 - If class warfare takes center stage in this with socialism expressed as virtuous it will be a disaster for the movie. I doubt that though. Instead I imagine this will be a part of the world that Bruce has to contend with instead of a part of the world that Bruce must submit to.
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/26/2026, 1:55 PM
@Bucky74 - If it is the Court of Owls being established in this and used in the third movie then it could be great. That grow has been a great new addition to Batman lore. Talon their main agent is great. If you haven’t read the first arc with them then you should.

And no it isn’t about socialists being the good guys. More about competing groups/visions among financial elites.

Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/26/2026, 3:03 PM
@Bucky74 - It was good. I also haven’t read much since the mid-90s. But I gave it a go and it was good. Competing groups of elites going way back in Gotham’s history and it is a comic book so the Court of Owls are straight up villains. They murder, Batman doesn’t. Etc.
