THE BATMAN: Intriguing New Deleted Scene Detail May Tease [SPOILER]'s Batverse Future

Yesterday, The Batman director Matt Reeves debuted a deleted scene featuring The Dark Knight paying a visit to an old friend, and a new detail has now come to light which may set up the character's future.

Warner Bros. (via director Matt Reeves) officially released a five-minute deleted scene from The Batman yesterday, giving us our first proper look at Barry Keoghan's take on The Joker.

The sequence, which sees The Dark Knight (Robert Pattinson) pay a visit to an old foe in Arkham to ask for his help in profiling The Riddler (Paul Dano), prompted a lot of discussion online, but one intriguing detail seems to have gone largely unnoticed.

As Twitter user Hawkmansworld points out, when the villain hands the files back to Batman, the paperclips are missing. We're not sure how "the world's greatest detective" missed this, but it would seem to indicate that The Joker intends to use the clips to make his escape.

This may not turn out to be a significant plot point moving forward, of course, and Reeves has even cast doubt on Keoghan returning for a potential sequel. Could this scene be setting up The Joker's role in that planned Arkham Asylum-centric HBO Max series instead?

Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot. You can also check out a 4K version of the scene below.

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman is still playing in theaters, and is set to hit HBO Max in April.

This Batman is incompetent in the detective department. Shoulda immediately thought to check the angles on the Anikka/Mitchell photos as they were all taken from the same exact vantage point. He'd have found Riddlers apartment before he ever needed to force Penguin into oncoming traffic or shatter a glass ceiling above a stadium of civilians.

@McMurdo - I noticed this too and heard someone in my theater mention it after the movie, in the lobby.

@McMurdo -

That was one of my problems with the film but only when I compare it to begins

In begins we see batman from the very beginning and making mistakes but being corrected when trained.

This batman is 2 years in and kinda an airhead compared to bales

But again I liked the film. Just a few *COME ON* MOMENTS ....

@McMurdo - I mean, that's part of batman's character flaw here. Riddler is showing batman this clearly huge scandal that puts both the mayor and the da in the penguins club. That, from his perspective, makes this scandal more important to the wellbeing of Gotham than some guy killing and exposing these politicians. It's even expressed in the beginning where batman comments on needing to choose his targets and to let his fear effect the rest as well as the pay off of that killer he didn't take down sooner causing all that destruction with the bombings.

@McMurdo - Also, he would have never solved the final riddle if some random cop with a relative who works in carpentry hadn’t shown up.

I feel like there’s a major consensus of people who are definitely liking this clip and this Joker, but still not needing to see him anytime soon. At least from what I've gleaned off of twitter.

I’d be fine with him being in the Arkham series and re-branding him as a Hannibal Lecter type but there’s so many other villains you can push for the movies. I’d be fine not seeing him for a few years or in the sequel, even after this tease. You can let a setup gestate and sit for a little while.

@BlackBeltJones - It's interesting that he's clearly already got a history with Batman. And since I still haven't seen this movie, it makes those thugs with clown makeup really feel like remnants or followers of this Joker's gang. Which was a nice touch if that's the case.

I'm somewhere in the middle though. I'm a little burned out on Joker, but he's so important that he kind of needs to have a movie to himself as the villain. In any Batman series. But what I'm tired of is everyone trying to give him their own take. It's been over 20 years since we've gotten a Joker even close to the comics on the big screen. I'm ready for that again. But Leto, Monaghan, and even Ledgers Jokers were so far from that that I really want a comic accurate Joker again.

@BlackBeltJones

I think Keoghan will have a role in the Arkham series and maybe supporting roles in a movie or two.

Don’t think he’ll take center stage as the main baddie though.

@CorndogBurglar - I agree with you. People keep trying to reinvent the wheel in a way. Put a radical spin on him. I give Nolan and Ledger all the credit in that they created a radically different, modernized and interesting new take on the character. So much so that after that I would’ve imagined we get a more comic accurate one because any other reinventions or new spins don’t hold water to it (IMO).

You look at other media adapting Joker, Arkham Games, Assault on Arkham, BTAS and they get it.

@regularmovieguy - that’s a happy medium that I would be down with. Almost like the Joker as a supporting piece, which is so rare.

I'm torn on this version of Joker.

I like what Monaghan was doing. I liked his laugh. I'm not so sure I'm a fan of him being so deformed though. Like with chunks of hair straight up missing down to the scalp. The swollen, deformed mouth, kind of getting in the way of how he talks.

I know it feels more realistic for someone that fell into a vat of dangerous chemicals. Like he actually does look like he was seriously scarred and burned from the chemicals. But.....I'm not sure I like it. I don't hate it either, though, so I guess that's a good sign and maybe it will grow on me.

For instance, I hated Leto's Joker's appearance and there was no way around that for me. Which is a shame because I actually thought Leto had a very good Joker appearance with the exception of the tattoos and stupid street gangster clothes and gold teeth. But with this? I can see myself ending up liking it.....or hating it. I need to see more.

@CorndogBurglar - Gotham had the perfect Joker look before he fell into the vat....

@CorndogBurglar - I think I was fine with Leto’s Joker being more of a gangster.. I didn’t like the tattoos or the grills (even though I know why he has them), but the clothes were fine to me if they were going for a Gangsta Joker.. his laugh was terrible though but I think Leto could still give us a decent Joker performance. He was hauntingly good in the ZSJL cameo.

As for Keoghan I didn’t like his casting and didn’t like the cameo scene in the film with Riddler, the scene just felt weird. But funnily enough I kinda dig what he did in this deleted scene and the scars and nasty look to him is something that interests me, when he gets out and wears the white make up and red lipstick with hopefully a purple suit and more green in his choppy hair.. could actually look really good.

@KWilly - Thats the look I want! That actor looks a little young to me, but the clothes and makeup are perfect.

I can understand why this scene was cut, hopefully they try something different with the way he looks. I get what they’re for but I’m not a fan of this choice.

This could be good. I'd like to see him in a show with Batman. The ultimate Batman show. Arkham. I think Barry needs time to really breathe into the char. My concern with the HBO max shows is no Batman.

@McMurdo - A thought I've had about that is that they don't necessarily need Pattinson to appear in the show to have Batman feature - the costume covers a lot. Get a guy with a jawline and stick to the shadows and wham! Though Peacemaker has shown that the big time actors are not above cameos. A Hannibal Lecter version of the Joker haunting Arkham Asylum sounds amazing.
