We've been hearing about this scene since the movie hit theaters, and The Batman director Matt Reeves has now debuted a deleted sequence featuring The Dark Knight meeting... a certain character!

We're still being careful about spoilers just in case some of you haven't had a chance to see The Batman yet, but director Matt Reeves has now debuted a deleted scene we've been hearing about since the movie first hit theaters, and it gives us a first proper glimpse of Eternals actor Barry Keoghan as... you know who!

In the 5-minute scene, Batman (Robert Pattison) pays a visit to Arkham to see an old enemy on their "anniversary" in an effort to find out what he knows about the serial killer who's been terrorising Gotham. The Joker (well, the proto-Joker) gives The Dark Knight a few hints, before taunting him by suggesting that he might have more in common with The Riddler than he'd ever admit to himself.

We get a pretty good look at Keoghan's take on the Clown Prince of Crime here, and Reeves seems to have taken inspiration from Lee Bermejo's artwork for Brian Azzarello's 2008 Joker run. This more grotesque iteration of the classic villain is bound to be divisive, but Keoghan certainly makes for a menacing Joker.

Check out the sequence below, and let us know what you think in the usual spot.

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman is still playing in theaters, and is set to hit HBO Max in April.

Do I need to get my ears checked or can other people also not hear 30% of what he's saying? This was cool though, laugh was good like 90% of the time.

@Spagett - reminded me of Bane pre-edit TDKR. Think the glass plays a role in that though

@Spagett - na you’re right I could barely hear too.I think it’s indicative of a lot of film/tv media these days. People speak so [frick]ing low in some stuff.

I also think it’s partly Keoghan’s accent. I couldn’t understand him at times in Eternals

@Spagett - I think the intention was to make it muffled so we hear the Joker through Batman's perspective...

@BlackBeltJones - I could understand him fine in Eternals. Maybe it's just when he tries doing American his words come out kinda warbly.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 3/24/2022, 1:51 PM
@MUTO123 - that could be the
case too. In Eternals it was only once or twice that I couldn’t and that could’ve just been his normal accent taking time for me to get used to.

@Spagett - Thank god. I thought it was just me going deaf LOL. I had to turn the volume right up to try and understand what he was saying.

@Spagett - I had no problem hearing on my phone. I just turned the volume all the way up. A scene with the joker and Batman going over case files I mean I assumed it would be low volume talking. I think there going for uncomfortable and suspenseful. They expect you to lean in and listen hard.

@Spagett - My only real problem with the movie was the fact that EVERYONE spoke under their breath. Like, nobody spoke out loud.

@MUTO123 - his American accent was good in American Animal.

@Spagett - Your device’s volume might be down?

…Or the creative Joker choice led to the scene being cut.

@MUTO123 - I didn’t understand shit in Eternals because it was so disgustingly bad that I left as soon as that goof started dancing. What a trash movie

He definitely looks very grotesque and memorable, with the scars, also the bad teeth.
The sequel will definitely be interesting

@SimplyAz - I think they're saving Joker for the third one and the Arkham show.

@KWilly -

Oh cool, maybe keep him as a background/cameo role until then?
I'd take that

@AmazingFILMporg - yeah this was a miss for me. He didn’t really seem… “Joker-like” to me. I know there’s a lot of different variations of Joker but I feel Reeves’ missed the mark on this one.

Glad they left this scene out. They should have cut his other scene too. Really not feeling this. Hate the design and really am not feeling Keoghan’s take. They need to do some major overhaul before he appears again…

I like this more than what was in the film but I’m glad they cut the scene. Otherwise the big thing this clip reminded me was just how well shot this movie was, maybe the best looking one of these ever

A bit over the top and too grotesque for me.. but okay.
tmp3
tmp3 - 3/24/2022, 1:30 PM
@TheMandalorian - I like how all these villains are grotesque and horror movie-esque and then you just have Colin Farrell stealing the whole movie as the funniest character in any Batman film
tmp3
tmp3 - 3/24/2022, 1:31 PM
Remove Robin and this is p. much The Batman’s main cast
AC1
AC1 - 3/24/2022, 1:55 PM
@tmp3 - The Batman really does feel like a dark take on '60s Batman, as you mention the list of main characters is almost the same, but there's also the fact that this is the first Batmobile since the '60s version that looks like a (modified) real car (both kinda muscle cars too), and even Batman's mask looks similar in that it's not sculpted to look angry like all the cinematic ones have since 1989 and even appears to have stitching and paneling around the face and nose much like Adam West's version.
Cap1
Cap1 - 3/24/2022, 1:31 PM
Genuinely frightening iteration of Joker going by that 5 min clip. Defo would’ve felt out of place in the film, though. The scene with Riddler was already unwarranted
