Lanterns Series Premiere Features A Nod To This Classic Batman Villain; James Gunn Defends "Tonal Shift"

The series premiere of Lanterns is now streaming, and the pilot episode features a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference to a classic Batman baddie...

The series premiere of the new DCU series, Lanterns, is now streaming on HBO, and despite some backlash against the ending and the perception that the show feels tonally mismatched to other DCU projects (James Gunn addresses this below), "Pilot" seems to have gone over pretty well with DC Comics fans.

The episode features several nods and references to Green Lantern lore that could lay the groundwork for what's to come, but one eagle-eyed viewer has also spotted a nod to classic Batman villain Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask.

Towards the end of the premiere, a poster for Janus Cosmetics can be seen behind John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). The artwork features a logo along with an image of a woman's face partially obscured by black feathers.

Janus Cosmetics was one of the brands owned by Sionis in the comics, and when his company went under, the ruthless crime boss was forced to accept a bailout from Wayne Enterprises. This humiliation drove the already unstable Sionis deeper into madness, and put Bruce Wayne on the villain's hitlist alongside his costumed alter-ego.

Black Mask was previously played in live-action by Ewan McGregor Birds of Prey and Peter Outerbridge in Batwoman.

Gunn has also taken to Threads to address the Lanterns' "tonal shift" after one fan said that he can't "comprehend this slate toward building a shared narrative universe."

"In the same way DC comics have," said the DC Studios co-CEO. "Certainly the DC works of Alan Moore, Darwyn Cooke, Grant Morrison, Jack Kirby, Paul Dini & Tom King can't be considered 'of one tone.

For me and others raised on DC comics, a huge part of the fun was enjoying a variety of stories in various genres and seeing inventive ways these tones interacted & interwove. For some of the authors — notably Moore and Morrison (and Tom King in Strange Adventures and more), that tonal interweaving became a part of the stories themselves."

Lanterns is set to debut on August 17 and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan," James Gunn said of the project when it was first announced. "We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU."

Has Gunn addressed the Supergirl failure at all? I've been away for a few weeks and mostly offline.

I thought it was decent. I KINDA agree on some of the complaints about what they are doing to Hal Jordan. However, the show JUST started, so kind of hard to judge it all just on one episode.

Either way I had a good time watching it last night.

I thought the episode was great. I also think it’s funny that people are complaining about John hooking up with a middle aged woman. Such a goofy take.

Really liked the first episode. Nice to see superhero content that’s not all green screen and mocap. Nice to see a plot revolving around a mystery and is engaging.
Sure I know green lantern will have green screen soon enough in space, but it’s nice to see writing driving a plot more than memberberries and cgi.

After watching the first episode, I was both excited and saddened at the same time. As a huge Hal Jordan fan going back to his introduction in the comics, I am left wondering what comes next after the jaw dropping conclusion of the episode. Both actors were excellent in their roles, especially Kyle Chandler as the crusty veteran Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern. For me, the recent comic changes with multiple Lanterns running around the sector is just too much, so Jordan's comment on one Lantern hit home with me. With that said, how is it that Guy Gardner also exists in this timeline and will show up later in the series. Guess we'll just have to wait and see where this goes. The series has my attention so far.

I mean , he’s right in that part of the fun of comics is getting stories in different tones & genres that are part of the same universe so why not apply that to the live action & animated film/tv side aswell huh?.

I love the MCU but their tone & style doesn’t tend to differ all that much usually in order to create as cohesive of a shared universe as they possibly can which is perfectly fine but so is this approach imo even if it may feel jarring at first (I think having someone like John in MOT will be the first big test of the tonal interweaving tbh)

Also while we have unresolved threads such as Salvation , I don’t particularly know if this universe is building towards a shared narrative right now like the Infinity Saga but just establishing this world and the various corners that inhabit it though we’ll see.

Anyway , I saw the pilot for Lanterns last night and I liked it quite a bit even if it’s not entirely my ideal take on the GLC!!.

Watched last night with the missus, and we enjoyed the hell out of it. I just don't understand dudes that claim to be DC comics fans, then get pissy when the storytelling strays from one very specific, narrow period of mainline storytelling. I always thought DC was at it's best in "Elseworlds" mode, and that's exactly what any media adaptation is. It's a different creator telling a different story in a different medium, and it's a helluva lot of fun to see how they approach it.
