The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd Set Photos Reveal First Look At A Fully Practical Grodd & Matter-Eater Lad(?)

We weren't sure if these shots were the real deal initially, but filming is already underway on People Vs. Gorilla Grodd, and we have a first look at a fully practical Grodd...

Last month, we learned that the DC Studios "DC Crime" series we've been hearing about is officially moving forward as The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd, with HBO Max giving the project an eight-episode, straight-to-series order.

We didn't expect filming to begin so soon, but cameras are now rolling in Atlanta, and the first set photos and videos have been shared online.

The shots reveal a first look at a fully practical Grodd, who appears to be... graduating from college? We assume this huge ape is either a stand-in for the CGI character voiced by Jimmy Tatro, or the simian villain will be brought to life via a mixture of CGI and practical FX.

The video is only a few seconds long, but it may feature a brief soundbite of Tatro's Grodd voice.

The photos also show Stranger Things alum Eduardo Franco, who is believed to be playing Matter-Eater Lad.

As previously reported, the show will star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, along with Superman supporting players Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Mary Holland, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz are also on board in undisclosed roles.

Apocalyptic Horseman recently reported that The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd will also feature the DCU debuts of Heather Kelley and the Newsboy Legion.

Kelley was a Daily Planet reporter and anchor of the show "News Around the World," who was introduced as a potential new love interest for Clark Kent in the pages of Superman.

The Newsboy Legion, meanwhile, goes back much further. They were a team of reformed juvenile delinquents active during World War II. The Guardian, aka Officer Jim Harper, took the youths under his wing and made sure that they stayed on the straight and narrow.

Check out the set photos and video at the links below.

"Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of 'Superman' that this would be a fun world to explore," said DC Studios co-CEOs and TPVGG executive producers James Gunn and Peter Safran.

"We're excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries," they added.

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, showrunners, writers, and executive producers, said: "We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artefact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis."

"We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime," they continued. "And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series."

Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series, added: "We are thrilled to be working with Tony and Dan, alongside James, Peter, the entire DC team and our colleagues at WBTV, to bring these iconic DCU characters to HBO Max in a new and unexpected way."

"We already know Skyler Gisondo is pitch-perfect as Jimmy Olsen, and we can’t wait for fans to experience Jimmy Tatro’s captivating and hilarious portrayal of Grodd."

@InfinitePunches - What's to defend? Supergirl is the only thing close to a miss, so far.

@foreverintheway - Please be serious.

I'm a fan of DC Comics (not Snyder). But if I were one of these insane Gunn loyalists who wants to die on the DCU hill, I'd be having to recommend people watch shows with full frontal male nudity and unfunny potty humor where every plotline is about the liberal talking point of the day. Where every classic hero is horribly mischaracterized and everything looks drab and brown.

Who cares that Supergirl may end up being the largest net loss of any movie ever made? This cinematic universe is a desert of creative bankruptcy. Pictured above is a mockumentary starring a guy in a Spirit Halloween gorilla costume. What are we doing here?

@KetracelWhite74 - You understand the irony of mentioning wet, Gunn, and having ketracel white for a handle right? Now I think Gunn would be perfect for Trek...although the composition of ketracel white itself would change dramatically.

Oh my Grodd.

It's giving some George of the Jungle vibes too, of his ape friend that was a very funny supporting character.

The college thing at Metropolis University must be part of some flashbacks I guess.

Gorilla Grodd does *what* to graduates??? 😂

Genuinely looking forward to this. I used to work in a newspaper office, so that’s one of my favorite aspects of Superman lore.

@EarlChai -

People are sleeping on this like they did Lanterns and honestly Supergirl as well. No one even went to watch supergirl because their favorite YouTuber told them it was “woke”.

@Nomis929 - Warlord would go hard. I enjoyed the Skartaris story that Mark Waid wrote recently in the Batman/Superman series.

I had a thought the other day after rewatching the Jonah Hex episode of Batman the animated series... Jonah Hex and the Milestone character Icon/Augustus Freeman canonically fought in the Civil War on opposite sides, but have never interacted in the comics. They could totally do an Old West-era World's Finest-style story about Jonah Hex and Icon teaming up to stop Ra's al Ghul or Vandal Savage.

You could do it as a relatively low budget show like Lanterns, dealing with similar themes but not feeling as heavy-handed being set in the 1800s.

@NicolausCopernicus - Blame Gunn and the Gatekeepers. They don’t know comics and characters that we truly want. [frick] them.

As someone above me said, "a [frick]ing gorilla with a graduation gown?!"

I'm a huge supporter and fan of the DCU but really? WTF is this? Of all things that could have been made, they chose this?!

Really hope that this is a cover for something else or at least an introduction of the Flash or something.

@Nolanite - One of the most embarrassing replies ever posted on this site... And that's a high bar.

You're not supposed to admit that you're riding on... 🤦‍♂️ or that you're willing to support anything he gives you no matter how bad it is!

And literally being in denial to the point where you're holding out hope that this is a fake show to cover up a real project is honestly just sad...

I know it sucks to admit when you're wrong, dude. I myself was wrong about Gunn. But this is beyond the pale...

@Nolanite - Good stay there. And when the Dark Knight Returns is filmed and finished do not watch or support. Stay with Pedo dick drawing Gunn.
