The Punisher: One Last Kill Sequel Reportedly Being Considered - But Will It Be A Movie Or A Series?

Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to develop a follow-up to the recent The Punisher: One Last Kill Special Presentation, and the sequel could take the form of a movie...

In many ways, The Punisher: One Last Kill served as a farewell to Frank Castle's ruthlessly nihilistic ways, as the character ultimately decided to embrace a slightly more heroic path in the MCU.

Even so, we may not have seen the last of the Castle killing machine.

According to Daniel Richtman, Marvel is planning to move forward with a sequel to the recent Special Presentation, but the studio is " deciding whether to make it a series or a movie."

If Castle is going to be a regular player in the MCU going forward (Jon Bernthal is expected to return for Avengers: Secret Wars), it wouldn't make much sense for the big-screen projects he appears in to alternate between PG-13 and R, so we'd say a new Punisher series is more likely.

The scooper also says that the "Marvel detective project I mentioned is a Special, but it could lead to a full series if successful."

We assume he is referring to the same "True Detective-style procedural" that was first mentioned by Jeff Sneider last month.

Fans were hoping that One Last Kill would be more of a lead-in to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the ultra-violent special, which is currently streaming on Disney+, is a mostly standalone story that focuses on Castle's struggles with PTSD and inability to move on from the murder of his family.

Spoilers follow.

One Last Kill does leave Frank in a "better" place, however, as the antihero decides to operate as a vigilante with more of a focus on helping those targeted by criminals, as opposed to continuing his obsessive revenge mission (not that there are many people left to kill, anyway).

This is the version of the character we caught up with in Brand New Day, and director Reinaldo Marcus Green recently explained Castle's renewed sense of purpose during an interview with The Direct.

"I mean, I feel like we're coming in at the right time. I think, just as a fan of The Punisher and a fan of Jon [Bernthal], I want to see him more on screen. That trailer looks amazing. Daniel Deston Cretton is an incredible filmmaker. So just to know that I got Frank first, which is cool to get there before everybody else did, which, selfishly, is really great, and set him up... And we [now] know his psychological state before he goes into Spider-Man. I couldn't have asked for better timing for us.

So I think it's just, it's a lot of fun. I think people who are fans and people who are non-fans can still appreciate the special. You know, someone like my mother has never seen The Punisher, I think she can appreciate where Frank is in his headspace, and then maybe she'll become a fan and then go watch Spider Man. So I'm hoping that we, we can get some new audience members."

They should make the Winter Soldier movie that Sebastian Stan pitched into a special presentation.

It will be whichever one is cheaper. Personally, I'd enjoy seeing something like the storyline of the PS2 Punisher video game, where one thing leads to another, and Frank is just killing his way through different gangs and villains. But we probably won't get anything close to that.

I wonder if in the sequel Frank will FINALLY track down the criminals responsible for killing his family. Or will he be back to being consumed by his PTSD?!

@foreverintheway - Didn't he already complete this in DD S2 and Punisher S1? TBH its pretty much pointless to make any more punisher movie or show because there are no more major arcs to adapt.

@mastakilla39 - that's my point exactly - they don't know what to do with the character but Bernthal wants to keep making them, even though he doesn't actually understand what Punisher stands for.

I think it should be a movie. Streaming series are losing viewers season after season, Marvel could use the extra money. I good mid-budget R-Rated action movie might help expand their brand after they dipped their toe with Deadpool and Wolverine. I even did a draft of "Welcome Back, Frank" to get a sense of what a Bernthal Punisher movie would be like.

I just hope we at least get a Punisher vs. Barracuda special down the line.

Just give THE PUNISHER A MOVIE! These special presentations are so dumb if they're not going to capitalize or expand on it. It's been four years since Werewolf by Night and there is literally no point to it what so ever. Especially since there's been like only 3 of these presentations in the past 4 years. Also, you just had Punisher appear in a movie that made over 2 BILLION at the box office and the new idea is to make another 50 min short film?

@Irregular - Very much in agreement. Although I can see pushback Disney pushing a character who kills into cinemas...

@Irregular - You are exactly on point 1000 percent with this. Give Frank his MOTHER FRICKEN MOVIE! RIGHT.FRICKEN.NOW.

@Irregular - I agree, it was a nice little "one shot" but it's kind like the worst of both worlds. It's too short for a theatrical movie, too expensive for streaming. It cost money and while it did get decent engagement for Disney +, it did ultimately cost more than it made. I think announcing a theatrical movie now, with the momentum from Spider-Man Brand New Day crushing 2 billion at the box office allows them to ride that hype into a Punisher movie. From all metrics, a 55-75 million dollar R-Rated Punisher movie could be Marvel Studio's John Wick, a highly beloved money maker that sees a pretty reasonable ROI.

I’m team movie. There’s already a lot covered in the existing series that it edges on retreading similar ground. Just do a movie with some creative kills and Ma Gnucci and barracuda

@JFerguson - I agree entirely. I even wrote a draft of Welcome Back, Frank to get an idea of what that would be: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f63byQ0PIlTajp5hyQ1VWsvLyD4V6x6j/view?usp=sharing

Ghost Rider was announced to intense enthusiasm.

Guaranteed Punisher would be received the same.

You could easily do an Oscar Isaac Moon Knight movie and a Werewolf by Night movie.

The specials and series were an interesting experiment that can maybe be revisited in the future.

It's time though for Marvel Studios to do these characters justice on the big screen with solid resources behind them. Punisher, Jack Russel, and Moon Knight are literally teed up for glorious big screen presentations.

Can it not be written by Bernthal and his military bros? One Last Kill wasn't very good.

Make it a theatrical release and have it feature The Defenders
TheVisionary25

Not a movie imo though I wouldn’t mind a series tbh…

However I think another Special Presentation is the best option especially since Ma Gnucci is still out there and I doubt she’ll stop coming after Frank for the death of her family so that’s one loose thread we can deal with.

Anyway , I had my issues with One Last Kill given it felt somewhat repetitive to his Punisher season 2 arc but still liked it overall so I wouldn’t mind seeing more in that ilk without doing a similar story again!!.
