THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Christopher Nolan On Bane's Voice And Filming In IMAX

The director of The Dark Knight Rises addresses earlier rumours that Bane's voice was cleared up after complaints he was hard to understand at screenings of the six-minute prequel, and goes into more details as to why he prefers IMAX over 3D.

Talking at a press conference yesterday for The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan was asked whether or not Bane's voice was altered or entirely re-recorded following complaints last year that it was nearly impossible to understand his muffled dialogue during special screenings of the six-minute prologue. Below is his response to that question, as well as more of his thoughts on what makes IMAX his preferred format over 3D.

"Not really. Some things are clarified and cleaned up. But we try to be true. I'm not really a big fan of ADR, so we try to be as true as possible to the recordings we do at the time. ...So for the IMAX scenes, because the IMAX cameras are incredibly noisy, you're then really in a position where what we would do on the set is immediately do a take without running the camera. And that way you'd get [the actors' voices] in the costume, in the physical positions that they're actually in when they're performing the scene. And those you can sync up very well to picture."

"We got a lot of mileage out of really making a big deal out of our premiere engagements in a very old-fashioned way, like they used to do in the '50s and '60s [with] 70 mm projection. For me, IMAX is all about it's [being] the best possible quality image when you film with their cameras and project that film in their theaters on those huge screens. There's really no other way to do that with any other imaging technology."

"What I love about it, as opposed to 3-D, is it creates a much larger than life image. When you watch a 3-D film, the parallax makes it more intimate, it shrinks the imagery that you're looking at. I actually really like for these characters and these movies, I really like to see Batman larger than life on that enormous screen. The clarity of the image really draws me into the movie, and I enjoy that."

Be sure to click on the link below to read more of Nolan's comments, including a rather awkward and heated exchange with a reporter who attempted to ask him a VERY spoilerific question something which takes place during the conclusion of the film (don't worry, the question isn't actually revealed over there). Stay tuned for more on The Dark Knight Rises as we get closer and closer to that highly anticipated July 20th release.

It says she gave away a big "reveal" towards the end of the film.
So there is a twisty reveal. Probably of the Talia character and probably not that Miranda Tate is Talia. I'll bet Popeyes penis it's Hathaway.

@remindkevin uh.. He's promoting the conclusion to a series he's bee working on for almost a decade now. He can say whatever he wants. Just as Whedon kept emphasizing that those characters would never get along, Nolan has the right to promote his film in which ever way he wants. Chill out dude.

@remindkevin

I'm sure Nolan is tired of being asked the same questions about his movie. I mean it is the conclusion of his trilogy. This movie concludes 10 years of hard work on one character. The final scene of this movie apparently is amazing and brings closure to the whole franchise. I'm glad he wanted to conclude his story, and I have come to the conclusion that I will like it. Life is all about starting things then concluding them.

@Marcel No, not really. I have tried to keep my expectations in check, but when the press give a film a standing ovation it has got to be something special, and it makes keeping those expectations at a sane level.

OnLeatherWings@ (Love that episode) I know, dude. And I love that about TDKR, but Istill need to know. And I guess that's part of the fun. Anticipation. Or in the case of a Batman film, anxiety. What ifhe [frick]s it up?
The hype on this film alone is like a murder mystery and I anticipate that the big secret reveal is that Selina is Talia and Bane is her brother. A lot of people who are completely adamant that this film will live up to all expectations are also adamant that thatwould be the worst idea ever. So what if it is? The fact that no-one knowsanything at all about this, means that you can't possibly know whether or not you'll like it.So I'm with Marcel@ on this.

True true you can't really know if one will like the film for the reasons stated. But as far as felling like this film will let you down...well I just can't believe that at this point. From my perspective everything about this film screams awesomeness this is 10 years in the making and being made by a director that pours his life and soul into what he's doing at all times. Whatever changes that may be with the characters , they will serve the purpose of a stronger story and that to me is what really matters...to me at least. This is Noland vision, no one elses. When I watch these films I like to think of it as being a separate story apart from any other mythos. It's like any number of different writers take on the characters and their back stories.
