THE BATMAN Sequel Officially Announced At CinemaCon; Matt Reeves Will Return To Direct

We figured we'd get an official announcement regarding a sequel to The Batman at CinemaCon, and sure enough, a follow-up to Matt Reeves' acclaimed reboot is now in development.

We knew it was only a matter of time, and a sequel to Matt Reeves' The Batman is now officially in development.

The announcement was made during Warner Bros.' CinemaCon presentation (Rohan has boots on the ground, so you can keep up to date with our live blog HERE), with studio chief Toby Emmerich confirming that “Matt Reeves, Rob Pattinson and the entire team will be taking audiences back to Gotham with The Batman 2.”

No other cast members outside of Pattinson were mentioned, but we assume Zoe Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright and Colin Farrell will reprise their respective roles. Whether Paul Dano returns as The Riddler remains to be seen, but Reeves and co. will most likely decide to go with a new main villain this time. Could it be The Joker?

Barry Keoghan played a "proto" version of the Clown Prince of Crime for one scene right at the very end of the movie, but Reeves has insisted that his appearance wasn't necessarily setting up a direct sequel. Still, we'd be very surprised if The Dark Knight's most iconic foe didn't factor into his next big screen outing in some capacity.

“The success of The Batman was a true team effort. We could not have gotten to this place without the theatrical experience. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As a lifelong fan of the movies, I treasure what you do,” Reeves said earlier today. “There’s a sanctuary to be found in the movies.”
