BLACK PANTHER Becomes The Third Film In Cinematic History To Cross $700 Million Domestically
Marvel's Black Panther is not only one of this year's biggest blockbusters, but it's also one of the biggest blockbusters of all-time and now, it's crossed yet another major milestone at the box office.
Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios have jointly announced that their Ryan Coogler-directed worldwide phenomenon, Black Panther, has topped $700 million at the domestic box office nearly six months after its initial theatrical release.
It now becomes the third film in cinematic history to reach the milestone, joining Disney/Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7M) and 20th Century Fox's Avatar ($760.5 million), not accounting for inflation.
Disney and Marvel gave the film a slight boost over the summer by tweaking its stateside theater count so that it could reach the mark without an official re-release. It's now been out in theaters for twenty-five straight weeks, which is almost unprecedented in today's theatrical climate.
Overall, Black Panther has earned over $1,346.7 billion worldwide ($700M domestic; $646.6M foreign) and it has secured its place as the third-highest grossing film of all-time domestically as well as the ninth-highest grossing film of all-time worldwide, not accounting for inflation.
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.
