BLACK PANTHER's Letitia Wright On The Potential For Shuri To Don Her Own Vibranium Suit And Replace T'Challa

Modern Marvel comics saw Shuri succeed T'Challa as the Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda. Could similar events play out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Shuri actress Letitia Wright responds.

The cast and crew of Marvel's Black Panther have described Shuri as someone who's smarter than Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark.  This fact was reinforced in the recent Avengers: Infinity War prelude comic.  Aside from her vast intelligence, Marvel lore reveals that Shuri is destined to one day succeed T'Challa as both the Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda.

Just as fans are wondering when or if Bucky will ever inherit the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers, the question of Shuri's future will certainly become a hotly debated subject in the coming years.  Wright said she's game to suit up but the timing has to be right and the focus right now will be on the Black Panther sequel.

"I hope, whenever the time is right, if it’s meant to happen, I would happily do it. But you can’t have a Shuri movie without T’Challa and you can’t have a Shuri movie without Ramonda and Nakia and the rest of the Dora Milaje and Okoye. So, I guess, the question is: when can we have Black Panther 2?"

Black Panther opens in North America and India on February 16.  It opens in China on March 9.

@HeavyMetal4Life -

Movie 1; Earns his title of king
Movie 2; Is blamed for letting Wakanda get caught up in Infinity War and he faces rebellions
Movie 3; Faces attack from an outside force such as Atlantis or the UN.

Shuri would be an important character throughout and fight in costume alongside him in the third - eventually with T'Challa giving her the mantle of Black Panther.

I'd like to see the dynamic before she suits up though, as she could work as a character that anchors him to Wakanda and his political aspects.

@Scarilian - More or less. A good 'plan' for the future films. Though I'm not sure he could be blamed for Infinity War when his country is invaded... I think movie 2 will take a different path.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Part 3s are usually the time Marvel replaces their hero. With the feminist movement in Films, Marvel has to include more woman and diversity.

Pepper replaces RDJ, Black Widow for hawkeye, Cap Marvel for CAP, Wasp for Antman, Shuri for BP, Gamora for Starlord, and Valkyrie for Thor. Now you have an all female avengers cast and film.

I'd argue that taking Black Panther out of his element or potentially focusing less on Shuri, Ramonda, Nakia and the rest of the Dora Milaje and Okoye would actually allow for more tension than having him fight as a 'small army' most the time. Kind of like taking Captain America away from Shield in Winter Soldier or Thor away from Asgard in Ragnarok. In my view this would work well for the second movie with the third having Wakanda at war with him forced to decide between being the Black Panther and being the King of Wakanda.

I do feel that Shuri should don the suit in Black Panther 3 as a secondary hero, potentially leading up to Black Panther deciding to pass on the legacy of the Black Panther to Shuri (albeit keeping his own suit encase he is ever threatened) Then she can take over as a Black Panther role while leaving T'Challa open to return.

As a side-note;

Hope people dont use recent events to dismiss valid criticism of the movie as shown in the later half of the above video - such as the CGI and comments about the action scenes.

Not every bad review for TLJ was because of a random facebook group, the same applies for Black Panther - it's a small majority of bot'd reviews that Rotten Tomatoes is apparently working to prevent.
