Kevin Feige Dubs BLACK PANTHER A “Big Geopolitical Action Adventure” Linked To INFINITY WAR

Hit the jump and check out what the head of Marvel Studios has to say about Black Panther long-awaited solo outing, and more specifically what the flick will be about, and whether or not we can expect a primarily black cast as well as any ties to Avengers: Infinity War.

We all know that next year’s Captain America: Civil War will finally bring the Black Panther to the big-screen and into the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans are still eager to know more about the future King of Wakanda’s 2018 standalone movie. And in the latest issue of Empire magazine, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige offered some promising new details.

“This one is important,” said Feige of the Black Panther movie, which will be the last “Phase Three” movie before Marvel’s two-part Avengers: Infinity War event. “Not only do you get an unbelievable lead character, but you also get all of Wakanda which is a whole new setting and culture to explore.” And while Creed director Ryan Coogler is in line to direct, Kevin Feige assures Black Panther will have a “primarily African-American cast.” As for what the movie will be about, the Marvel producer says, “It's a big geo-political action adventure that focuses on the family and royal struggle of T'Challa in Wakanda, and what is means to be a king. T'Challa's story is very important to us as it links to the next Avengers films, which is why we brought it forward.”

Things sound very promising for the Black Panther movie, which so far stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa and potentially Ernie Hudson as T’Chaka with a February 16, 2018, release date. In light of the Black Panther movie being linked directly to the highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, that could be where the Soul Stone is introduced if not during the two-part event. What do you think?

Just saw that Star Wars: Episode 8 comes out just three weeks after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Wonder how that'll affect GOTG's success.

Geopolitical action adventure you say? I'm liking the sound of this...

Also glad that the cast is primarily black, hoping that means Wakanada stays true to its roots and doesn't try to be a mixed society.

cant wait for BP i wonder which villian they will choose? i cant help but automatically think klaw but they could use other characters. maybe if klaw is the villian batroc could cameo as a member of klaw's mercenaries.

@NightWatcher It might actually help Guardians, depending what else is coming out. Because when tickets get sold out again, families could be like we can just go see Guardians. But it depends what else is going on. I do wish Star Wars wasn't in the summer competing with all the other major releases. Star Wars should continue doing business in December when it's only real competition will be Avatar.

That's actually exciting. Only if they weren't helbent in hiring a coloured director, Duncan Jones(director if Warcraft and Source Code) would create miracles.

@DrDoom: I have been on a questioning spree. As you write editorials, I need help from you. I am trying to write an editorial too. But stuck in putting the right 'Category'. I have tried putting all the names of the tabs in the main homepage, but I couldn't see any selection option appearing for me. Can you help?

NightWatcher- it should do ok because it would have made most of its cash in that time, but it would limit GOTG staying power. i doubt everyone would embargo GOTG just because there is another space flick coming out although i think star wars viii would be better off opening in december like TFA.

Omarvis - We live in a front-loaded business model in Hollywood where it's all about the OW.

WinterOstritch - hopefully they won't do what DC allegedly is doing with some of their stuff. JoBlo claims the Cyborg movie will be replaced with a Teen Titans movie, so there goes one solo black superhero movie. They also claim Green Lantern Corps will be a buddy cop movie with Hal Jordan and Stewart, so see the black GL (and member of the Justice League) needs a white guy to help sell tickets. That's what they think. Just wait and it'll be reported that Batman will cameo in that movie too.

I like the idea Marvel is like, "screw it people will go to our movies just because of the red bumper."

heres a thought for black panther maybe klaw after ultron and having no vibranium left decided to have another go at getting some and attacks the vibranium mines. then the film could be BP hunting down klaw and his mercenaries to find the man that killed his father.

When did Coogler officially get hired? If that's true great news!

I was so sure that Black Panther would end up being an "Avengers-y" movie, like Winter Soldier rather than a true solo film, but I guess not.

If they really do dig into the anticolonial themes of Panther, with a primarily black cast, and emphasize his uniqueness instead of being "just another chapter in the MCU", then it's a fairly ballsy play. Especially releasing in February, which isn't the most fertile box office soil.

Wakanda might have an infinity stone. The king solomon's frog comes to mind

WakandasSoul- i know namor is typically a hero in the comics (but a huge dick) but i would love to see him as the villian for black panther mainly to see BP kill him.

One thing Black Panther can truly shine in is it's mythology beyond just being a anti-colonial and independent nation fueled by wakanda products. I think that this can be the first big Block-Buster movie with Native African Gods. Like, screw Thor for a moment, just imagine if we got Bast, the panther God? City of the Dead, past Black Panthers. Best part? They can either go full on Thor level of nuts with it or can go very real, with it only being a statue of Bast. Either way works, but I just need to see it on screen.

@Sulti1274 that would place it as the Soul Stone, which works out quite nicely

WakandasSoul- it would be awesome, im still pissed marvel faked panther killing namor in the comics it was so satisfying then next issue he survived. they could substitute namor for a made up character if they cant use the rights or even atuma but namor would be better.

Let's just hope Black Panther isn't just a set-up film like every Marvel film seems to be going for
