AQUAMAN Star Jason Momoa Met With The Russos About Playing A Villain In A Marvel Studios Movie

We know that Jason Momoa once met with Marvel Studios about taking on the role of Drax, but the Justice League star has now reflected on meeting with the Russos for a villainous character in the MCU...

Jason Momoa turned down the opportunity to play Drax because Marvel Studios wasn't offering enough money and the role eventually went to former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista. However, it sounds like the Aquaman and Justice League star talked to them about another character because he actually had a meeting with Captain America and Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

"I met the Russo brothers, who are amazing," he confirmed. "It was one of the best meetings I’ve ever had. I was going to do something with them, which unfortunately didn’t work out." He doesn't elaborate on why but when Momoa was asked which character that was for, he added: "I don’t know. It was going to be a villain, I think. People always want to hire me to play a villain, you know?"

Chances are the Aquaman star met with them for the role of Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as he wouldn't have been a good fit for Baron Zemo and it's highly unlikely they wanted him for Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers 4 when he's been hard at work on movies set in the DC Extended Universe.

Are you disappointed that Momoa is not part of the MCU? Share your thoughts below.

He certainly could have pulled off Crossbones, but Grillo was fine

@LordHarryLatts - I feel the same way, but i keep thinking that elevator scene (might be favorite quick fight scene in the MCU) would've looked a bit different with Momoa in there. Seeing Momoa get thrown to the roof of the elevator car wouldve been awesome.

That's quite awesome to know, i could see him as Kraven directed by The Russos.

There's always next time Momoa, and i gotta admit i'm slowly getting used to him as Aquaman with all the recent reveals, hope he surprises me as well as i trust Wan to direct him better this time around.

Would have been a cool Crossbones, definitely would have made Crossbones get a bigger role in future movies if he got it considering how much bigger Momoa has got since WS.

"I met the Russo brothers who are amazing," Momoa said. "It was one of the best meetings I’ve ever had. I was going to do something with them, which unfortunately didn’t work out. I don’t know. It was going to be a villain, I think. People always want to hire me to play a villain, you know? I did an audition for Guardians of the Galaxy, which was super cool. I got to audition with Chris Pratt, who’s just a legend and a gentleman. That didn’t work out. And then really the other one after that was my audition for Batman with Zack."

Least you could do is put the full quote in if you're going to post an article about it, Josh.

Would like to see Momoa play a CGI character for some reason

Jason Momoa turned down the opportunity to play Drax because Marvel Studios wasn't offering enough money and the role eventually went to former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista.

That's one version of things, versus what James Gunn himself said about the matter:

"Jason and Dave both tested for the role and read with Chris Pratt, and we offered it to Dave. I normally wouldn't share WHO auditioned for a role, if they didn't get it, but Jason has talked about it, so there you go."

@Kyos - It was never about money, and that's some nice revisionist sh!t by Gunn to make Bautista not look like second fiddle. I'm much more inclined to believe Momoa who has always spoken candidly about such things..

"Of playing Drax, he said that "it didn't really fit in my time because I've done so many things where I don't say much and I'm coloured up and I have my shirt off again. I made a conscious choice to turn down some movies that were action-based to direct Road To Paloma so people could see that side".

"I want my children to see their father happy. It's not that it's not a good role, it just wasn't the right thing. I was on Stargate: Atlantis for four years playing a similar character called Ronon, who was an alien who didn't say much and grunted. I've been there and done that, whether people have seen it or not. You want to stretch".

That makes sense, and I've seen all of Atlantis....he's right. Ronon to Drax would have been a lateral move...

But believe what you want i guess...

@Talontd - I haven't seen any Atlantis, but MCU Drax as a character is as much -if not more- defined through his dialogue than his action scenes and his muscles.

And not that much later Momoa signed on to play a tough guy of few words character, who is destined to go shirtless, and looks like a slightly older version of his Atlantis character.

@Kyos - The MCU dodged a bullet there.

Ares is a good choice in the future.
