Avengers: Doomsday Will See Chris Evans Return To The MCU: Anthony Mackie Reveals If Sam's Time As Cap Is Over

With Chris Evans returning to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, does that mean Sam Wilson is going back to Falcon and handing over the shield? Anthony Mackie weighs in...

In the minds of comic readers and moviegoers, is Captain America a mantle, or is Captain America explicitly Steve Rogers?

One of the major moments of 2019's Avengers: Endgame came in the film's closing moments, where an aged Steve Rogers passed down the shield and Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson.

Sam Wilson officially took over the mantle in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), but looking at how things have played out, it's clear that the handoff deserved a proper theatrical release for Sam's official debut as Cap.

In all honesty, there was a ton of hype about the incredible amount of potential and storytelling opportunities for Sam suiting up as Cap that was largely squandered by having such a major moment debut in a streaming series and then following that up with the much-maligned Brave New World (2025).

Now, with Steve Rogers actor Chris Evans returning in Avengers: Doomsday, does that mean Anthony Mackie's time as Captain America will come to a close in 2026, after just two official appearances as the character? In comparison, Evans enjoyed 8 years as Cap and 7 official appearances, not counting 4 cameos.

It seems Mackie's time is not over just yet, as he was quick to point to Steve Rogers' time as Nomad, something that's been rumored to occur in the MCU for quite some time but seems to finally be happening in Doomsday.

"Steve Rogers in the comic book — There is a comic book. You say you're a nerd. Read the comic book. Don't be a nerd by trade, be a nerd by fact. So, in the comic book, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad," said Mackie.

On a more humorous note, Mackie was also asked if there's going to be another "On your left" moment between Steve and Sam, to which Mackie laughed and replied, "

"We finished it with Endgame, so now we have newer and more interesting lines coming...That was a little teaser!

In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Stephen McFeely, Avengers: Doomsday stars Downey, Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Wesley Holloway, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Alex Livinalli, and Mabel Cadena, with Tenoch Huerta Mejía.

The film is produced by Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz, with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer.

"Don't be a nerd by trade"

Words from a [frick]ing Hollywood actor, love the blatant hypocrisy on a Sunday morning.

@MaxPaint - You left out the qualifier to give that quote full context tho - "Don't be a nerd by trade, be a nerd by fact." That's not being hypocritical, that's just saying know what you're talking about in that Steve Rodgers was Nomad in the comics.

He was a great Falcon, but he makes for a terrible Captain America! And didn’t we already see Steve as Nomad in the MCU when he and the others opposed to registering were on the run? I always thought he was Nomad in Avengers Infinity War.

> He was a great Falcon

He was one of MCU's most boring heroes, and he still is, just in a different costume.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 7/26/2026, 9:31 AM
@Loverboy83 - I liked him as Falcone but he’s no Captain America. And Cap isn’t a mantle, it’s a character like Batman. Dick isn’t Batman, Bruce is and it’s the same with Steve and Cap. But Disney always tipples down on their failures so I can’t see them giving that man back his shield.

They Should kill him off and let Steve back in the uniform, that way no one has to admit he was not up to the part but just say it's part of an overall story. Simple.

I would be okay with Papa Doc never acting again. No reason he should’ve ever got that shield.

Like others, sam sucks as cap, should have gone to Bucky. Sam was a good falcon, he has no powers and lacks the heart and leadership of Steve. Brave new world sucked, garbage, cap doent fly and the costume also sucks. Sam needs to let it go. Steve is and will always be cap, regardless of the actor.i hope they reboot and bring Steve back as cap, sam as falcon and Tony as iron man. That's the comic secret sauce and the mcu needs to know that, follow canon.

@cubichy - Are you imagining that Mackie is somehow obstructing Evans returning to the role? That Marvel wouldn't jump at that if it were on the table?

Also, follow canon? Which canon? The MCU canon where Sam is Cap? Or the comics canon where...Sam was Cap?
cubichy
cubichy - 7/26/2026, 3:38 PM
@Clintthahamster - they should have given the shield to Bucky, not sam. reagless, Sam has become Cap twice, but always falls back. Why? Steve is the original Captain America and will always be the most iconic. Steve Rogers is the definitive Captain America in the public mind and the character’s foundation in canon. Sam Wilson may have worn the shield, but that reads more like a phase than the permanent center of the mythos. Marvel can do whatever it wants, but that doesn’t change who Captain America is to most readers. Fan will show up for Steve and NOT for Sam as CAP, we saw that in brave new world. MCU only works cause of the comics, and they need to follow that canon, where Steve rogers is CAP, period. Even in the current continuity, SAM is fake cap yes, but steve also plays cap in avengers and other aventures. Why? Steve Rogers is the original and definitive Captain America in comic canon. since 1941 i believe

@cubichy - Obviously Steve is the original, most iconic Cap in the comics. But movies aren't comics. What so many folks on here miss when they're complaining about the MCU skipping this story line or eliding that plot detail is that comics have ~350 issues, 7,700 pages a year to tell their stories, where the MCU at its best has had ~3-4 movies a year. Not to mention the fact that the MCU is trying to adapt not just current storylines but the 50 years that came before the MCU. They're just not going to get to all of it.

So faced with time constraints and human actors' annoying habit of aging and, occasionally, declining to return to a role, they make choices. They compress storylines, they skip entire sagas, they change characters' status quo.

And yeah, it's entirely possible that they'll bring Evans back in for one more run as Cap, and I would join y'all in celebrating his return. But the fact that y'all are still out here carping about Sam being Cap seven entire years after Steve handed him the shield, crying that "IT SHOULD BE STEVE, AND IF NOT STEVE THEN BUCKY, BUT NOT SAM!" is not a great look. "Any White guy is better than the Black guy" doesn't really make it look like your primary concern is fidelity to the source material.

Mackie was great as Falcon, but the writing failed him as Cap in BNW. Steve Rogers/Captain America has been my favorite comic book hero since I first started reading comics as a kid, but I maintain that Mackie could do well as Cap if they gave him better material. I liked, but didn't love, BNW, and the substantial reshoots and script revisions didn't do it any favors. But Sam Wilson as Captain America was never my problem with it.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 7/26/2026, 11:09 AM
Sam should remain Cap imo…

Regardless of what people felt about BNW , i think one of the strongest aspects of that film is Sam since it shows how strong he is in that role as a character as it does so with Mackie as an actor so i hope we don’t shift that already and have it go on a bit longer even if it’s just another chapter in the story of the MCU.

@TheVisionary25 - id like to see a moment where sam, john, Steve, and bucky toss the shield between each other while fighting an enemy like a doombot or Doom himself

Similar to the bucky/steve vs iron man fight in civil war. But now with FOUR capt America adjacent characters instead of TWO.

Hehe

"Steve Rogers in the comic book — There is a comic book. You say you're a nerd. Read the comic book. Don't be a nerd by trade, be a nerd by fact. So, in the comic book, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad," -Mackie.

And "in the comic book", Bucky became Captain America LONG before Sam did. Don't be a nerd by trade Mackie. Give up the shield to Bucky to make it right just like IN THE COMIC BOOK. 🤨

chumpchampion - 7/26/2026, 1:50 PM
@SuperiorHeckler - Totally see your point (also enjoy reading your comments!), but 2 things can be right at the same time - yes, Steve was Nomad in the comics & yes, Bucky was Cap before Sam - BUT whoever the MCU decides to give the shield to is above Mackie's pay grade, so it's not like it's up to him to make those story decisions.
SuperiorHeckler
SuperiorHeckler - 7/26/2026, 3:47 PM
@chumpchampion - First off, thank you. 🤓 Secondly, you are 100% correct. Skipping the obvious (and comic accurate) choice in Bucky and going straight to Sam was a front-office decision. If I was Anthony, I'm accepting it and doing backflips celebrating such a promotion for my character. But, Bucky was the true redemption-arch that was left incomplete. From Steve to Bucky AND THEN to Sam simply felt more organic to the story-line that had been playing itself out since 2014's WINTER SOLDIER. 🤨
chumpchampion
chumpchampion - 7/26/2026, 10:49 PM
@SuperiorHeckler - Yea agreed, no way Mackie says no to the proposition - which could end up still working w Bucky eventually having his moment taking up the Cap mantle. Like imagine if they have that same type of passing-of-the-torch moment w Steve & Sam in Endgame, but at the conclusion of Secret Wars Bucky has that moment w Steve, which would be kinda creatively cheap - or a "call-back", "full circle" moment as if it was meant to be all along haha.

Bucky missing out to Sam has inadvertently built up hype for him to eventually take the shield too, so just hope it eventually gets to that organically.

Mackie was a good Falcon.

He is a bad Cap. He doesn’t have the charisma or acting chops to be the headliner for this massive franchise.

It should have been Bucky, but….. Hollywood.

I would love to see a "Truth: red, white and blue" r-rated movie about Eliah Bradley and the other black soldiers getting the super soldier serum before Steve Rogers as guinea pigs and kicking nazi ass on a suicide mission behind enemy lines.
I am thinking a mix of Inglorious Basterds, Operation Overlord and The wild Geese.

That being said, Steve is Cap, Sam is not.

I dont understand the point of bringing two OG characters back but not in the role the audience wants to see them in. Aside from a few people on this board, there isnt a normie alive who doesnt want Evans in the Cap uniform as opposed to running around in a black T with Thors hammer.

I can say the same about Downey. I'm convinced whatever reason they said it has to be him is because they wrote the movie around that. Imagine the hype if both Steve Cap and Ironman were back. With Armor Wars being announced, Im convinced both will reprise their roles.

As for Mackie, its not just that hes bad as Cap. The writing has failed the character and its impossible to turn it around now. Instead of that non sensical D+ series, the first movie coming out of Endgame should have been Cap4 minus the shit writing. They were probably on to something with the serpent society. A relaunch of Hydra leading to the rebuild of Shield and the Avengers would have positioned him as a leader.

So, Nomad for Doomsday and a proper Evans return as Cap for Secret Wars then I’m guessing.
Scarilian

We already had the Nomad aspect in Infinity War where he removed the star representing America from his costume and grew a beard. They can't just do the same shit again only this time in a t-shirt and expect audiences to be engaged in that.

If anything, it's moronic that we aren't just getting a team-up between Steve, Bucky and Sam in costume, do a NWH style team-up where they each have a Captain America costume. Heck, throw in John Walker and Red Guardian if you want.
