CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD's Anthony Mackie Says His Cap Won't Be As Quick To Fight

Actor Anthony Mackie discusses the main difference between when Sam Wilson is slinging the vibranium shield in the MCU and when Chris Evans' Steve Rogers leads the team.

One of the key cornerstones of Chris Evans' portrayal of Steve Rogers/Captain America was that he never ran from a fight- regardless of whether he was a scrawny teen facing bullies in a Brooklyn alley or starring down an alien invasion on a decimated battlefield.

However, Anthony Mackie recently stated that Sam Wilson will be taking a different approach in Captain America: Brave New World.

"It’s more so about his ability to connect and counsel. He’s not as rash to bear arms as Steve Rogers was. Having a super serum makes you impossible to beat, so your answer to everything is to fight it out. Whereas Sam Wilson can actually die pretty easily.

A more cerebral approach to a Captain America film certainly appears to be in the making as Tim Blake is set to return to the MCU as The Leader. Other possible antagonists include the Serpent Society and  Harrison Ford's Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross.

The plot of Captain America: Brave New World is still under wraps, but it is expected to follow Sam Wilson as he continues to uphold the mantle of Captain America in a post-Avengers world.

It will be interesting to see how much of the film deals with the themes of legacy and responsibility as Sam largely tackled those issues in the 2021 Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Director Julius Onah (Luce, The Cloverfield Paradox) previously stated that while the Disney+ series dealt with Sam's struggle to accept the mantle of Captain America, Brave New World will deal with Sam becoming a leader.

Perhaps that's a hint that Sam will be assembling the Avengers once again by the end of the film? We'll all find out when Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on July 26, 2024 (pending a looming SAG-AFTRA strike...)

Do they resist to urge to put 30 Seconds to Mars “This Is War” in the movie?

Yeah, I can really see how weak you are without that super soldier serum

I would be slower to fight supervillains if I couldn’t bicep curl a helicopter too lol

@Ha1frican -
Sam Wilson does this with a truck in episode 6 of TF&TWS... they can frick off trying to pretend that he's going to act any differently from the superhero stereotype we've always had.

@Ha1frican - Well, FWIW, I bicep curl the drone helicopters that my kids have flying around my house every damn day, so I'm ready. Bring on the supervillains bitches!

Yeah, no... frick off with that garbage. Sam Wilson was flying through helicopters, smashing through windows, he was constantly focused on fighting rather than thinking - as emphasized by his moronic "you have to do better senator" speech while he was defending an actual terrorist or how his incompetence led to the creation of U.S. Agent, both in rejecting the shield and in being retarded enough to think that someone else wouldn't take up the mantle.

Sam Wilson used to be an extreme likable supporting character, but TF&TWS destroyed him and they can't just pretend that did not happen.

@Scarilian - Excellent take down of the character and highlight of some of the reason that show SUCKED! And now they are trying to get us excited for a garbage Captain America with this dude by saying he wants to sing kumbaya with people instead of fight? Oh yeah Anthony Mackie, that sounds really exciting...NERD!

@Scarilian - They can and should pretend that did not happen. This show was a steaming pile of She-Hulk.

Cap is a mantle that demands an orator, so this fits. I’ve never seen him as one who desires to throw punches first

Man has always been a wordsmith talking others down

@GhostDog - I agree. I just don't trust today's writers and filmmakers - or today's comic writers, to be honest - to give Cap words that unite or resolve or even inspire, if we're talking about a general audience and not a tribal one. Division is their business, and too many of them don't even know it. And too many of them crave it.
