CAPTAIN MARVEL: Brie Larson Weighs In On The Smiling "Controversy" And Reveals How The Movie Addresses It

As you may recall, some fans took umbrage with the fact that Brie Larson's Carol Danvers wasn't smiling in early marketing material for Captain Marvel, and the Oscar winner has now weighed in on that...

Have you ever seen any backlash about a male superhero not smiling enough? Well, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson came under fire for not plastering a cheesy grin on her face in the early posters and trailers for the movie, and the Oscar winner has now weighed in on how she felt about that.

"That’s just a depiction of the female experience," the actress revealed during a recent press event. "That’s just what it’s like. So it didn’t really both me that much when I saw that that was the reaction because that’s just how it goes."

"It happens," she continued. "This is part of why art that depicts the female experience is so important because on one hand, for women and girls it allows us to go, ‘Oh, I have that experience, too.’ And those that aren’t in our bodies can go, ‘Wait, that happens to you? We’ve gotta do better.'"

Co-director Anna Boden added that while she tries to stay off the internet for the most part, she wasn't shocked at the reaction from fans and there's actually a scene in the movie which addresses that - one that was shot long before the online backlash! Apparently, that involves a guy on a motorbike telling Carol she needs to smile more!

"It was always in the script. It’s not an uncommon thing for women to hear," the filmmaker said. "So it doesn’t surprise me at all that it was in social media. I think a lot of women can relate to that moment."

What do you guys think about these remarks?

I mean... did people not get that the whole "smile" thing in Jessica Jones was a commentary on men demanding from women a polite, pleasant demeanor even as they show zero regard for the woman's emotional state or agency?

I didn't think it was subtle.
