Costume designer is an especially important job in the comic-book movie subgenre, and many hardcore fans are quick to judge productions basing on the set photos. Sanja Milkovic Hays is a daredevil who will face the potential wrath of the fandom, as Marvel Studios hired her to create the costumes for Captain Marvel’s upcoming big-screen debut.
Croatian-born artist is no stranger to the sci-fi genre - last year she worked on Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond and designed costumes for multiple alien races appearing in the movie. Captain Marvel won’t be her first contact with the genre, as one of her first big projects was Stephen Norrington’s Blade back in 1998. Also, Hays dressed the cast of every single Fast and Furious movie ever made (all eight of them, to be precise).
The costume designer is the latest addition to ever-expanding Captain Marvel’s cast and crew, joining the director duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind, Sugar), production designer Andy Nicholson (Assassin’s Creed, Gravity), VFX supervisor Christopher Townsend (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Iron Man 3), screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Rider), Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island, Room) and Samuel L. Jackson (The Hitman's Bodyguard, S.W.A.T.) returning as Nick Fury.
Crafting the costumes for 90s SHIELD agents, the alien Skrull and Kree races doesn't sound like an easy task, but a quick look at Hays’ resume confirms that she isn't likely to disappoint.
Captain Marvel releases on International Women's Day, March 8th, 2019.
