Recently both director Robert Zemeckis and his writing partner Bob Gale  both made it  clear there is not going to be a reboot, prequel, sidequel or standalone “Back to the Future” film. But hey there’s always comics right? We can travel anywhere in a comic, and it seems Marty McFly and Doc Brown will be doing just that.

Arriving October 21st. IDW Publishing is proud to announce with the original movie’s creator/screenwriter Bob Gale on board. We will get a new comic series based on original characters from the film. The series, subtitled “Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines” will fill in the blanks with stories of characters that fans already know and love. Make no mistake this is not “Back to the Future Part IV.” The comics will focus on tales that take place before and between the events of the trilogy or in alternate realities.  Gale had this to say.

“We’ve subtitled this ‘Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines because for years, fans have asked questions about things that happened before the events of the trilogy, in between the events of the trilogy, or in our alternate realities,” said Gale. “In this series, we’ll finally answer some of those questions, with our focus squarely on the characters everyone loves.”

Joining Gale in this four part series are two familiar IDW writers: John Barber (Transformers) and Erik Burnham (Ghostbusters). The series artistic team will be split between Brent Schoonover (Batman ’66) and Burnham’s long-time collaborator, Dan Schoening (Ghostbusters), and each subsequent issue will feature rotating artistic teams.

The first issue will feature three standard covers, a four part cover by Schoonover which is displayed as the banner, one by Schoening, and Amy Mebberson (My Little Pony).

HitFix posted an exclusive first look at the cover by Mebberson.

The first issue simply titled “Back to the Future” will take readers to 1982 where they will witness the very first meeting between Marty McFly and Doc Brown. In part 2 we  will travel even farther back in time, all the way to 1943. In a revealing tale how Doc got himself mixed up in the Manhattan Project.
