In a phone interview with WIRED, PACIFIC RIM director Guillermo Del Toro gave some more details on the upcoming prequel comic.
The story, written by the film's screenwriter Travis Beacham, goes inside of the academy tasked with training the pilots who control the giant robots (called Jaegers), and which represents humanity’s only hope against the kaiju onslaught.
Del Toro also had this to say about the project he calls "an interesting experiment," and which will incorporate the character back stories that he wrote during preproduction:
“We figured out a lot of the science behind the Jaeger tank and what would make it possible to drive or ride a machine like that with existing technology evolving one step or two. So we are tracking both the first generation of pilots and also the technology and how it developed.
The idea was, from the get-go, we talked about trying to expand the universe in the film. One of the things we decided was that comics were perfectly suited for something that could be longer-arc."
The graphic novel is slated to come out a month before the film hits theaters in July of 2013.
