Courtesy of Bleeding Cool DC has given us a look at Batgirl #1 that will hit stores on September 7. Jim Lee stated that they are going to keep the history of the character Barbra Gordon from when she was shot and paralyzed by The Joker in Alan Moore's The Killing Joke. Said Lee, "We thought when you see her recovering from that, it would continue to add nuance and depth to the character." In the preview the comic even shows a flash back from the Moore comic of the point when Joker shoots Barbra.

Not raped, just undressed and taunted while Joker took pics to show Jim in an attempt to drive him mad.

I like this art. Good storytelling technique.

It's kind of a shame that it looks like we're losing Oracle. I'd always thought Oracle was a really inspirational character. Barbara rose above just moping around feeling sorry for herself or watching TV all day and getting fat, and found a way that she could still be an important contributor in the war on crime.

Ror, one interpretation is that he raped her...but it wasn't really implied. I kinda always figured he had.

Nuck, she got a transplant.

Really really stupid and pointless to have Babs back as Batgirl. She was such a strong character with a great new identity. She was a figure of empowerment for the disabled and abused. There isn't a story they will tell with her as Batgirl that couldn't be told with another character. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I'd love to see an animated film for the killing joke. That would be awesome.

this is just wrong, grayson should be batman, gordon should be oracle and batwing should have a better name

Babs should always be Oracle, this is a mistake.

@Nomis, I'm sure Oracle will appear in Batman & Robin and Nightwing, since those are set at the other end of the DC timeline

@itbegins, I think the Batgirl series is like the new Batman and Detective Comics, set in the past during her career as Batgirl and the page with the killing joke dream is a premonition.

I see the first 5 issues (at most) being big sellers before sails drop off and people when the original continuity back and DC has to buy the rights to Superman's backstory back to pull that off.

As a fan in a chair myself, wouldn't be quite as annoyed if they'd put an emphasis on what she went through to walk again rather than just shoving this in your face. It's clunky at best work at best.

This should be interesting. i wonder what they're gonna do with Stephanie. We know Cassandra will still be around and probably an agent of the Bat in Batman Inc when it returns.

The only worthwhile upside to this is it makes a smoother connection to her role as Commissioner on Batman Beyond.

This is stupid. She mattered so much more in the DCU as Oracle.

I'm not that keen on the artwork, either.
BillyBatson1000

Really like the artwork. I guess if they can fix Batman's back with a really STUPID plot point after Bane broke it - they can fix Batgirl. But the sad thing is - I know that Oracle has become a role model for younger, disabled readers. That was far more important than this.
