Art is great, simplicity is key, guys. Simple art makes for better poses and action, kind of a combination between Finch's and Timm's art to me.

If this is phoning it in, I wonder what you people think of Greg Land and Rob Liefeld's artwork..

His Spawn stuff has a ton of problems. Serious ones. He's at his prime right now. Don't let nostalgia blind you.

Scott Snyder's keeping me going here but Greg Capullo's art is tempting me to drop; he's not the artist we need or deserve.

Guys, do you not understand sarcasm? I was saying if you think this art was bad, you should see land and leifelds art and come back to this. This art is not bad AT ALL.

Less is more. Everything that is here is just enough information to get across to the viewer. The storytelling is key. You say cartoony, yet Capullo has always been cartoony. But you prefer his Spawn work. Look back at Spawn, which is arguably darker, and look at how Capullo drew his wide-eyed kids. His Sam and Twitch. Etc.

How so? You mean his pencils? No, they are tight enough to work with. Have you seen Sean Murphy's pencils? Those are less than sketches, but he inks his own work. What I'm saying here is, the art doesn't entirely rely on the penciler. Capullo works with inkers he's comfortable. The best inkers add their own touch to the art rather than just "tracing" over the pencils. Jonathan Glapion, and now Danny Miki, do that expertly.

Black isn't used as negative space. The art that isn't used is. In this case the sky. The colorist handles that portion. The black in panel 5 of page 1 and the splash page with the billboard are used as framing devices to focus on the scene. Place an object in front of you, and look directly ahead of that object. Your vision will naturally blur out the object in front of you. That can't be done in a comic, so this is the closest you can get.
Panel 5 of page 1 in particular, however, is also made to lead your eye. You look at that page and your eye goes straight down until that last panel. Now you're looking at the bottom right corner and about to turn the page. This is called page flow, which is an integral part of layout and composition. Which Capullo handles masterfully. They're not blacks to fill in spaces. They are decisions the artist has to make. Not everything is pretty pictures, not everything has to be colored. Now Batman is also covered in a lot of black. Well, that's to make his full appearance more dramatic. That scene in Batman Begins at the docks, it was made all the more effective by the time "I'm Batman" is delivered because you barely made out the character up until that point. Same theory here.

I love Capullo's art on Batman, and I want him to do more DC stuff personally.
