COMICS: Will We See A New (Possibly Female) Robin In BATMAN & ROBIN #19?

COMICS: Will We See A New (Possibly Female) Robin In BATMAN & ROBIN #19?

This is complete speculation for now, but one half of the gatefold covers for April's Batman & Robin #19 definitely teases a different - or at least a differently costumed - Robin alongside The Caped Crusader. Check out the cover and a brief solicitation after the jump..

On the darkest of nights, who is the one person Batman meets that could change his life forever?

Who is swinging alongside Bats in the above pic? Here's where the speculation comes in. Many believe - though there isn't any real evidence to support it yet - that Damian will meet his maker as the end of the "Death Of The Family" arc. I mean lets face it, SOMEONE will most likely end up brown bread if this story is indeed going to feature “an unspeakable tragedy that places Batman in danger of losing his humanity.” And if it is Damian, a new Robin will be a must - but could it be a female this time? As Comicbook.com note, the above image is reminiscent of an iconic pic from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, which features Bats swinging into action alongside young Carrie Kelly as Robin. I'm sure we'll find out more about this soon enough, but for now, assuming we will be getting a new Robin (female or otherwise), how would that go down with you guys?

i wouldn't bring Stephanie Brown back as Robin maybe return her to Spoiler but combine her original Spoiler outfit with her Robin and Batgirl costumes... bring in a different robin and yes make it female.

They already introduced the Mutants into the New 52, in Batman Inc. Since it's a whole new multiverse, the Dark Knight universe may not exist, anymore. And since this new universe is one-third Wildstorm and Wildstorm was the Image universe, before Captain Atom - Armageddon and Dark Knight Returns was acknowledged as a part of the Image universe, it would make sense to see elements of Dark Knight Returns, in here.
Sorry to go uber-geek, a little, there, but I pay attention to shit like that.

Why does Batman always gets a new sidekick after the old ones either die or move on while every other hero always seems to have their sidekicks retcon out of existance or killed off?Am I the only one that thinks the ultimate solo act hero has a sidekick while the upbeat role model heroes rarely /if ever had one?

On a side note hoping it just a costume change, but it's more then likely a new Robin.Probably that Harper Row chick they introduce afew issues back.

Bruce wouldn't get a new Robin if his son died. Not right away. Tim or Dick would step back in to help him out before that.

LEVITIKUZ, never said likely, just raised the question as a possibility..the cover is reminiscent of an iconic panel from TDKR. And IF there is a new Robin, I do think it would probably be a female one just to mix things up a bit..Carrie is probably the most popular Robin there has been despite only appearing in two graphic novels.

skot888, yeahhh, and this is an April solicitation?

Galvatron@ How long it took Batman to replace Jason Todd with Tim Drake?
In the real world: 9 months.
In the Post-Crisis Comics world: About a month.
In the DCnU: About a sandwich.

They might be finally killing Damien off? I hope the body is dismembered enough that we know good and well that there is nothing in comic book magic or science that could ever bring the little bastard back. His death can't be violent enough. And don't forget to seal the casket in cement (after verifying that the body is indeed in there) so we don't have any zombie Damians either.

Only thing is, it took Batman a while to bring in a new Robin after the apparent death of Jason Todd. If we do somehow have one, and a female, my money is on Stephanie Brown.

MarkCassidy - 1/14/2013, 3:37 PM
Yeah...Carrie is still the most popular incarnation among old school Bat-fans..at least from anyone I've spoken to.

Ror@ Agreed. Grayson never had the love he has today. As Nightwing in the Teen Titans, yes, but not as Robin.

I'm figuring it could be Earth 2's Helena Wayne. She's met damien, seemed only a matter of time before she ran into Batman.

In fact I would go as far as to say that Batman is at his worst when Dick Grayson is Robin.
Case in point: The comics of the '40s, '50s and '60s.
The Batman TV show.
The Schumacher movies.
The very below par sequel to The Long Halloween.
The only time Dick Grayson as Robin was ever used well was in the '70s comics and on the Animated Series, in which he was used sparingly at best.

MarkCassidy - 1/14/2013, 3:45 PM
I never liked Grayson until he became Nightwing, never liked, and still don't like Drake. I won't even mention Jason Todd. I actually do like Damian quite a bit, but Carrie is still my fave..that might have something to do with how much I love TDKR though I guess.

Carrie? really?
I'm sure most people haven't even heard of that character

I'd be disappointed if Damian was killed off. While the Dick Grayson-Batman/Damian-Robin was more interesting than the Bruce Wayne-Batman/Damian-Robin, I've still enjoyed the book as a whole. Count me as someone hoping Damian makes it out of this one alive!
