Joe Quesada Says DC's New 52 Is "A Response" To Marvel

On April 4th we will get to see the highly anticipated clash of two of Marvel's biggest and best super-teams in Avengers VS X-Men. Both teams have squared off before, but never to such fanfare and build up. Many see this as Marvel attempting to reclaim the spotlight from DC, who's decision to relaunch their characters with the New 52 has proven very successful. Two rival brands trying to up the ante on each other is nothing new of course, but while speaking to Hero Complex, Marvel CCO Joe Quesada dismisses the idea when asked about it, and actually flips it - claiming the plans for AvX have been on the cards for years..

“Yeah, of course — that’s what people want to think. But let’s be clear: The DC relaunch is a response to everything Marvel’s been doing, and not the other way around. You don’t set fire to your entire house for no good reason. And by the way, I tip my hat to them. They did something daring and it worked for them. They boosted sales of some of their books. But ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ is something that’s been on our docket for publishing for several years now.”

The two companies have been copying each other for years and will continue to do so, should one do something amazing the other does their own version.

I read like 6 books of the New DC and I enjoyed only one... And half-enjoyed another one. But everything else was really bad.

I have given tried to get behind nightwing, teen titans, justice league, action comics, batman and robin and detective comics. As it stands i'm down to B and R and JL. Gave them a good enough chance but some of this 52 is boring as hell. I only collect 5 titles from Marvel so in no way am i super biased.

I think it's silly that both companies still do this. Even if plans have been there for a while, what's wrong with just admitting YES we thought it was time to launch something big to counterbalance DC's New 52. I guess the constant back and forths make for good rivalries and keep all of us talking..which isn't bad for them anyway!

i've read batman 1,swamp thing 1 & i've borrowed animal man 1 from a mate.

i like what i've read so far,got the trades on pre-order.

still think dc should of created another universe like marvel did with its ultimate line.

I have gotten fed up with a few New 52 titles myself..but the ones I really liked I still do. All of their "dark" stuff is awesome but then I was a Vertigo man back in the day. I'm looking forward to AvX as much as anyone too though.

Ironman53 - Well said. I feel the same way but turn around as respect to the Marvel fans. I pick up every month 6 titles on the Marvel, I never read them but I do like to save them.

No he's More then Likely right and DC has lost Quality in trying to compete. DC was doing some great Books before they hit the Reset Button and Marvelized there characters.

While I'm more of a Marvel Guy through out the ages 2008-2011 Was Dominated by DC in my pick up list. They just had better books. Now they pretty much have a shit ton of Batman Books one maybe 2 good and the rest very meh or flat out bad. They could have easily done more with what they had already set up.

All the thought and talent put into this Reboot should have been utilized in Adjusting the titles they had.

actually competition does not lead to better results but it actually creates low self-esteem and neurotic aggression because you can only feel good about your products or accomplishments as long as somone has not done something better and once you bevome aware of that you're under pressure (at least in big companies like this) to create something even better and if you fail you know you could lose your job and income so I don't think a spirit of competition is what's needed, especially in the US where it's everyone for himself and no help for or from others at all costs. his reaction to DC's 52 is just what i was saying: he's clearly pissed that the recent marvel books have not taken off and so he's trying to sell another product in which he puts all his faith. if it works out, good for him. If not, he's probably not gonna work for much longer at marvel.

Also, when people ask "why are they still doing this?" It's ecause of money and because they want to own a monopoly and secretely they despise the competition they so often say they embrace because it takes away precious money that they feel they could own. that's also partly the reason for the Avengers vs DC war. noone can feel good for the other one winning. It's about total dominance of the American comicbook market. I don't root for corporations because they're not people, they're legal entities bent on making profit and nothing else. Anything else is what peopel project unto them wthout any rational reason.

Exactly. Marvel was owning DC in sales for over 30 years prior to the DC Relaunch. It's obvious. DC got desparate, so here comes the DCnU.

Face it, DC may have created the comic book superhero, but Marvel perfected it.

I believe what Mr. Quesada has said, DC did in fact reboot their comic universe in response to Marvel's cinematic universe...

I see it all for what it is: a quick grab for new readers, and an edgier take on their concepts (including tweeking the costumes for a more realistic take)

Either way, it makes DC look weak compared to Marvel, despite the better comic sales..

i always thought it was funny how people asked "ok now is marvel going to reboot their line?"

they did. 11 years before DC. it's called Ultimate. and you get the best of both worlds.

@catoon22 wtf are you talking about Marvel is not winning, Joe is just mad because the top 10 last month were all Dc titles. Him saying X-men vs Avengers was planned is bullshit. We all know they had to make that move to keep up with the New 52.

I think the majority of business professors, consultants and executives are going to disagree with you. As the CEO of an organization, I certainly do. Competition is what makes you strive to put out a better product and keeps you on a continual journey to be innovative and offer better products and services. If you don't have competition to measure against you can become stagnant and rest on your laurels. To each their own, but I disagree wholeheartedly.

1st super hero, 1st team up, 1st team, first company wide crossover, 1st cartoon based on a comic book, 1st toy line, Oh and lets not forget 1st comic book movie (what is this site called again?) EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF MARVEL IS A RESPONSE TO DC. DC DID IT FIRST.

FIRST COMIC ANTI-HERO: Namor (1939)
FIRST INTEGRATED COMIC BOOK UNIVERSE: Marvel.

Your point? LOL

MatchesMalone@ sure it is. it's the same end game. the same result. they tightened things up and made it so 70 years of [frick]ed up continutiy makes a little more sense. going by your reasoning DC never rebooted anything either. they've got pandora and the stranger guy walking around talking about reverting things back to the way they were. so technically thats just a different world/alternate universe too, right?

With a name like 70-s japanese monster, you're a relic Mothra just like most of the DC-ites who don't get Geoff Johns tried to Marvellize DC with the new 52. Archaic squeaky clean superheroes era is over and the oppositevariety now are found in both companies. Btw why are old geezers like you are still rabid for comics instead of 501k?
