The "Beyond" era of Amazing Spider-Man kicked off last week with Ben Reilly taking over as the new Spider-Man. Peter Parker has been sidelined after being caught in an explosion caused by The U-Foes, and Marvel Comics has now confirmed that this saga will be told over 19 issues (by Patrick Gleason, Saladin Ahmed, Zeb Wells, Kelly Thompson, and Cody Ziglar).

Peter Parker may be out of commission but luckily, Ben Reilly is more than capable of taking his place. Equipped with gadgets and tech from the Beyond Corporation, Reilly has everything it takes to be the superior Spider-Man but he’ll finally meet his match in a devastating battle against one of Spider-Man’s most feared enemies next January: Doctor Octopus!

In writer Cody Ziglar and artist Paco Medina's Amazing Spider-Man #85, Ben Reilly is going to lose BIG when he faces Otto Octavius; issue #86, from writer Zeb Wells and artist Michael Dowling, will deal with the aftermath of the fight and will be a comic that fans will remember for years to come. Then, in issue #87, by writer Jed MacKay and artist Carlos Gómez, Captain America and Black Cat see if Peter Parker is ready for action again with Ben Reilly and NYC reeling from Doc Ock's attack.

Marvel Comics has also announced that January will see the release of Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1, a new one-shot written by Jed MacKay with art by C.F. Villa. This unlikely team-up will see Mary Jane coming to the rescue of Black Cat after she’s been kidnapped. Mary Jane has never liked Felicia Hardy, and now she has to save her life.

Lordy... C.F. Villa wasn't influenced by J. Scott Campbell's work at all...

@Waddles - I can see that too.

The Cap and Cat cover also sorta reminds me a bit of Ed McGuiness when he refined his style in his DC days.

@ElricReturns - to be fair, I think he held back in the breast department.

@DTor91 - and also I'm used to the man's style from 20 years ago, and I noticed subtle differences.... but I guess his styles just evolved. Huh.

Well, at least my eye was on point.

@ElricReturns - Lol got it. Yeah he still does covers and the occasional interior pages. Last pages I saw from him was in a Spawn comic last year. But yeah he’s changed and refined a lot from the Danger Girl days.

CF Villa is very good though and glad to see more work from him. Has a more old-school manga influence.

@ElricReturns - devolved. He was better twenty years ago..
Also to compare Art Adams with Ed McGuines is heresy. And I like Ed..

That first cover is one of those images that make for great panels I want to see carry over to the movies

Im not 100% caught up with Spider-Man stuff at the minute (got caught up with the latest Vader series and that span into other stuff) so was really relieved to see Peter survives the end of the run I'm on (was aware of Reilly taking over).

So I was even more relieved to read this and see that Peter will be back after this 'era', I was never a fan of Reilly back in the day and was frustrated to see he was coming back to the spotlight.

This reintroduction of Ben Reilly kinda makes me wonder if a sort of in-universe Spider-Verse-style dynamic could work with multiple Spider-Men operating at the same time. Kinda like Batman, Inc. but less global and without the billion-dollar backing, more of a ground level thing.

I mean, we've already got Peter and Miles doing their thing in NYC, right? And is Spider-Gwen permanently in the main Marvel Universe now or is she back in her universe? But yeah if you've got the 3 of them already (and at times we've had other characters like Agent Venom, Kaine as Scarlet Spider, etc) then maybe Ben Reilly could be another Spider-Man doing his thing at the same time as the others, as long as they give him enough of a unique twist.
