Avengers: Armageddon #5 Teases A Dark Future And Reveals Two Major Returns - Spoilers

Marvel Comics released Avengers: Armageddon #5 today, and it's proven to be the game-changer the publisher promised. In the wake of Red Hulk's devastating attack, the world is turning on superheroes and a new United Nations-backed S.H.I.E.L.D. is formed.

People have had quite enough of superpowered individuals causing widespread destruction, and Nick Fury Jr.—the son of the original Nick Fury—has been tasked with bringing them in line and creating a much better world with the "Superpowers Resolution."

Tony Stark, meanwhile, used Doctor Doom's technology to get a glimpse of the future and sees a victorious Mephisto holding a downed Spider-Man by the throat. We know some sort of clash with the Marvel Universe's devil is coming in the pages of Avengers, and theories continue to swirl about the comic potentially undoing "One More Day" or at least addressing it.

The biggest surprise is saved for last. After the apparent death of Bucky Barnes in Red Hulk's explosive outburst, we see the former Winter Soldier heal and return to life...where he comes face-to-face with the original Nick Fury.

Fury was taken off the shelf years ago, and like Bucky, it seems he and the immortality-granting Infinity Formula might be making a comeback. This likely ties into Chip Zdarsky's upcoming Immortal Soldiers one-shot.

"Avengers: Armageddon didn't end the war – it started one," the description reads. "An explosive one-shot setting the stage for a new year of stories and mysteries. With the world no longer trusting superheroes to save them, Earth still needs saving. Who will step up to the plate and keep watch over the planet when we need it the most?"

So, Spider-Man is about to form a new team of Avengers and Fury and Bucky are setting out to protect the world from the shadows (making an eventual Fury vs. Fury clash seem highly likely).

Big things are coming to the Marvel Universe, and Avengers will be the place to see that play out. For now, check out some pages from Avengers: Armageddon #5 below.

There's nothing I hate more than people turning on superheroes in the Marvel Universe. How many times have we gone down this route?

@JediKnight91 - that’s just a trope they use to make the superhero the “little guy” that needs overcome the judgmental regular people and be the bigger person and forgive them.
The trope I hate is the teenager that gets a cool superpower and then looks at himself as a freak. “I have no outwardly, visible, physical change but now I can move things with my mind. Why me!? I’m such a freak”.

@dragon316 - Spider-Man is actually cool with Jameson and has been for a while in comics, the latter knows his identity and isn't as antagonist as always. Backs him up in his own way in fact without making it too obvious to his readers/followers that he is pro-Spider-Man either, so that's changed one part of the Spider statu-quo.

Well at least Bucky fans can take a breath in relief of their fave not being done dirty.

Welcome back OG Fury. Fury vs Fury coming up soon then. I like that alternative better than setting up the stage of what cold be yet another Civil War scenario because that has already become dull and repetitive, it would be the 3rd time that happens and specifically in each decade.

The art of Mephisto holindg Spidey like that is cool (although that's from the head not the throat) however I remain very skeptic about One More Day being undone even if it's in a big comic book like the Avengers and by Chip Zdarsky because it has been attempted before by Nick Spencer's run in The Amazing Spider-Man and that was put to a stop by Marvel/Spidey (?) Editorial that is still reigned by Nick Lowe. They arre hellbent on keeping that status-quo so what could Zdarksy possibly do that is different than what was tried before? Maybe just address it ala making the entire Marvel Universe and the cast of characters know that a part of it's history (Peter and MJ's marriage) was taken not just from them but from the entire world.

But I guess Zdarsky just wants to lay down some possible storyline seed threads and hope someone else picks that up. Can't bring myself to look down upon the well-intentioned efforts if that is so. Personally I still think OMD must be undone in the pages of TASM where it was also done.

Another thing that has me scratching my head is how all of this, Spider-Man forming a new Avengers team for this, will be handled within his own comic because by April he's bound to be feuding by some reason with Miles in the Crisis in Faith storyline.

But can't lie I am not curious to keep up with these and see what will come out from them. I'll be there reading no matter what.
